Congressman Flood checks out Bellevue police EV cruiser



BELLEVUE, Neb.—While Rep. Mike Flood made his rounds in the Omaha area Tuesday, he stopped by the Bellevue Police Department to check out its new electric police cruiser—the only one in the state. “I just wanted to see what it felt like and talk to the mayor and police chief about what inspired them to become the first department really to do this,” Flood said. The police precinct has deployed the vehicle for the last three months, working out the bugs and getting familiar with it. "It's not just for use for the Bellevue Police Department, but the data that's collected and the case uses of it are going to be available to all of our law enforcement partners to see whether that's something that fits their unique needs in whatever jurisdiction they're working," Officer Tony Paulsen said. As well as whether police have this "green" option.

“I would say that this has proven to be a benefit to the department and to the city that we look forward to expanding at some point in the future," Paulsen said. Flood even got to take a ride in it. "They tell me this handles much better," he said. "It's safer for the officer to be able to maneuver in different ways and that it has all the pickup that you would expect in a gas-powered vehicle." He said there’s a big conversation in Washington, D.C. about the use of electric vehicles. Has he heard any concerns from corn producers about how electric vehicles will impact the ethanol industry though?

“I am always about figuring out ways that we can increase our ethanol production and keep the prices the same or better," Flood said. "But at the end of the day, what i think's good about having this conversation is that we need a mix. We need everything. We need wind, we need solar, we need gas-powered vehicles, we need natural gas.” He said Bellevue PD's electric cruiser is another chance to take advantage of Nebraska’s low-cost electricity.
