Thousands of dollars in grants available for South Omaha small businesses
The Turnback Tax Grant deadline was extended until April 6 for South Omaha small businesses. Small businesses say the money would be helpful for pandemic recovery.



Thousands of dollars are still up for grabs for businesses in South Omaha. The deadline for the Turnback Tax Grant was extended until April 6 because no businesses applied last year. The Turnback Tax Grant is created by a Nebraska statute that states 10% of Omaha's funds must be equally distributed to high-poverty areas. The statute previously said the money could be used for historical preservation and reduction of violence. Last year, the statute changed, so now 45% of the turnback tax can go to small businesses and entrepreneurs.

The application reopened about two weeks ago. Since then, four businesses and organizations have applied. The $36,000 up for grabs will be distributed to those who qualify no later than February 2024. The Turnback Tax Grant Committee will review applications in May. Amanda Colanino owns DogGurt. DogGurt is a frozen dog treat she sells out of her shop in South Omaha. These past few years have been tough on small-business owners like her.
