Native American group wants Washington Redskins brought back
A group of Native Americans is calling on the Washington Commanders football team to revert to its old “Redskins” name. Bill Dieckman with the Native American Guardian's Association joined "NewsNation Now" to discuss.

Re: Redskins?
As with everything there were some Native American groups ok with the ‘Redskins’ name. Even recently Magic Johnson, who’s part of the new ownership group, has said they’re looking into bringing the name back.

Re: Redskins?
If you can't tell from my username, that is my favorite team. Thankfully the organization is finally headed in the right direction (at least I hope, now that Dan Snyder is out)
I have long studied the franchise and the team name and logo was a sense of pride for Native Americans. It was designed to resemble a chief by his family. Of course the name is considered derogatory, and that is what I think most of the objection was over.
There has been a renewed interest in bringing back the Redskins' name as mentioned above. I don't know if it will ever happen, but if they can find a way to honor native americans more, I think that would be a great thing.
As Brad pointed out above, they are one of the oldest franchises in the NFL and have a storied history.

Re: Redskins?
This is my hometown team, and I’ve had the honor (because I was an event planner at the time) of meeting and socializing with a number of players and coaches at a few charity fundraisers back in the Joe Gibbs era. Dave Butz even let me try on his Super Bowl ring (he just took it off and put it in my hand when I asked him about it). That being said, I’m kind of on the fence regarding the whole naming flap. On the one hand, I don’t think, in this day and age, people would name a team after a skin color. Can you imagine a team called the Yellowskins or the Blackskins? Didn’t think so. I really don’t think the name is coming back, but I’d like to see them with a name honoring something having to do with First Nation peoples. No one I know likes the current name. “Commanders” sounds like the name of a double A baseball team.

Re: Redskins?
I hate the current name. IMO, the jerk Dan Snyder said "Oh, you don't like the current name? See how you like this" and gave the name finding campaign the lamest attempt he could.
I think the name was more a casualty of the woke movement than it was a real problem. Now the team is struggling to find an identity. They should just be "Washington team that always changes names" for all it matters now.
