Mexican Consulate hosts Las Posadas event
The Mexican Consulate brought a Latin American tradition to Omaha this week. It hosted Las Posadas on Thursday. Asking for posada happens during the nine days leading up to Christmas Eve. It's part of a larger Mexican celebration for the season. Posada means inn or shelter. Head Consul Jorge Espejel explains that tradition is a reenactment. "Joseph and Mary were walking around nine days before Jesus came, they were visiting some houses looking for hospitality," Espejel said. Different Omaha businesses set up model buildings in the consulate so kids could go door to door collecting candy and other treats. Traditionally, kids also sing asking for posada.
