Board game fans are in luck -- Hasbro is calling for your help in creating an Omaha edition of Monopoly. The game was announced at a news conference Friday morning. They’re looking to fill 22 property squares for the board. Ideas proposed include the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, RiverFront and Charles Schwab Field. Hasbro also wants some inside jokes -- such as where you’re most likely to get stuck in traffic. Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says the project is a great way for Omaha to connect.

“We have so many unique things here, from people to new event spaces, and things going on all over Omaha,” Stothert said. “We thought this would be really fun. I could see a little game piece that’s a little Runza sandwich right now.” Hasbro says the game pieces will not be unique for the Omaha version or the four corners of the board. The game is expected to be released this November. Those who wish to drop suggestions for the game may do so by email through early May at [email protected].

Love the go to CB instead of going to jail joke!

It’s too bad they won’t cast new player pawns… I’m actually surprised they won’t for this specific game version as they do that for a lot of themed versions. I’ve even bought collectible HotWheels cars that came with a real custom Monopoly game piece (technically is was a Johnny Lightning branded car).

Anyway, it’s very cool. Makes me really put faith into the $10 billion NEX project (or maybe that’s moved up to $20 billion by now)?

No Zoo and I really question if someone actually from Omaha put this together. Or maybe it was someone that just kind of falls into niche segment of someone from Omaha. The areas they put places is questionable and lastly, WOW is Rocco's doing on here?

First few locations should have been like Spaghetti Works (even though yuck), Dinkers, and maybe Hollywood Candy or better yet, Antiquarium.

I assumed they are kind of in groups:

Brown = Parks
Light Blue = Non Profits
Purple = I haven't figure this one out
Orange = Local Businesses
Red = Local Restaurants
Yellow = Outdoor Attractions
Green = Athletics Facilities but not sure why UNO doesn't switch with CHI or label the space Baxter Arena?
Dark Blue = Not sure other than they are both downtown

WOW is Rocco's doing on here?

I assumed its all the national pub they get from the CWS "Jello Shot Challenge"? I am would have guessed Runza would have been in the place of Rocco's.

My Biggest letdown is the 4 railroads. We have 3 Big Railroads in town and one regional RR in town. Why didn't they keep it true to the game?

No, that's the official one they did on top of the 2019 flood photo with the Santa Lucia festival on the riverfront. Its just cropped in really tight.

Love the photos on it, but won't be spending $50 considering it doesn't cover 1/2 the attractions or landmarks I think it should considering I've been here nearly 50 years.

Lastly, a big sticking point is they didn't develop player pieces to fit the game - nearly all other licensed Monopoly games on the market (ie, Dungeons and Dragons, The Simpsons, Sopranos, etc) have themed playing pieces. Sure, it's a niche game that will likely sell to Omaha residents, but if you're going to do, do it right.

Pretty disappointed considering the hype this received when it was originally announced.

You could be correct - although any pics taken from the street or outside should be fair game (but they probably wouldn't do that out of respect as well as to avoid any potential issues). I would be very surprised if a place like the zoo asked to not be included on a Monopoly board...

Your statement above is correct with the exception that if it is used for a for-profit activity, then you can photo or video what you can see from the public area does not 100% apply

The Omaha Parks Foundation, which is believe is in Dewy Park. They are selling it for $40, HOWEVER Omaha Parks Foundation get 100% of the proceeds. Made in Omaha, Spielbound, and NFM all have it too.

I feel the same way about the board, I have the board too and it feels like "generic" places were put in there.

No FNBO tower, no Omaha Doorly Zoo.

Instead of using Omaha unique name spaces, they used several generic names like:
Botanical Garden, rather than Lauritzen Gardens,
Airport, instead of Eppley Airport
Railroad, instead of something else (Union Pacific space already used)

Places like Blackstone Hotel, Durham Museum, HDR, Spaghetti Works, Omaha Fine Steaks, Hollywood Candy, and SteelHouse could have been used.

What is with Zorinsky Lake park being added? That's a park only familiar with the immediate local residents in west omaha
Same with Memorial park, which is more of a neighborhood park.
The Riverfront space was there, so I don't know how the Missouri River space was included
The Crop fertilizer tax space is questionable too, as that is more of a rural Nebraska type space
The Durham museum would have been a better space than the Children's museum; A Durham Museum picture would look better than the kid drawing of Children's Museum.
Union Pacific could of used the UP HQ, instead of a UP train in the prairie.
The Farmer's Market space, while important is not something that Omaha just has; essentially every city has a farmer's market and unlike the permanent all year round Kansas City's River Market, Omaha's farmers market is only temporary, seasonal.

It seems that whoever created this board could have put more effort in making Omaha's edition more memorable, rather than using generic names.

It's about who wanted to agree to having their names use in addition to paying the game to be on the board

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe. So, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumble bees on them. Gimme five bees for a quarter, you'd say. Now where was I... Oh yeah! The important thing was that I had an onion tied to my belt. You couldn't get regular onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.
