Malcolm X Site gets grant

Post by Coyote »

34 years after the foundation was created there still is yet to be a memorial except for a sign marking his birthplace!

Malcolm X historic site gets block grant from city
Omaha World Herald wrote:The foundation will use the recent $30,000 grant to survey the land, prepare architectural renderings and pay for maintenance and security of the site.
The foundation owns 65 lots of mostly vacant land surrounding the spot where Malcolm X's parents, Earl and Louise Little, once owned a home. The home at 3448 Pinkney St. is gone.

From the W-H piece:

'The foundation's goal is to honor the slain civil rights leader with a museum, an amphitheater and a community center where education and cultural programs would be offered. A replica of the Little home also is planned, if photos of it can be found.'..

This will cost..But hopefully it will all become a reality 8) ..

..Ciao..LiO....Peace

Malcolm X Benefit Hopes to Restore Leader's Birth Site

http://www.kptm.com/Global/story.asp?S=7765542
Omaha (KPTM) - Just a field...

The lack of something more to mark the Omaha birthplace of an American icon is putting the life of Malcolm x back in the headlines. A Malcolm X benefit went on Wednesday night. The hip-hop community is leading it, which some in the area believe it's long overdue. But the neighbors aren't alone. At least one city council member is not happy with they way the Malcolm X's birth site looks like today.

A Street sign, a plaque, and parts of a house foundation is all you see at 34th and Pinkney, Malcolm X's birth site.

Supporters of Malcolm X ask why he isn’t in Nebraska Hall of Fame already
Commission takes testimony in Omaha, with most advocating induction of the civil rights leader

Only a few blocks from the birthplace of Malcolm X, a parade of Omahans called Wednesday evening on a state commission to induct the famed civil rights leader into the Nebraska Hall of Fame. Their main question: Why isn’t he in the Hall of Fame already? “You are doing something that the world has already acknowledged. You just have to catch up with them,” said Leo Louis, president of the board of the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, which operates a visitors center at Malcolm X’s birthplace near 35th and Evans Streets.

The six-member State Hall of Fame Commission took two hours of public testimony Wednesday night at the Revive Center, near 24th and Lake Streets, concerning the eight nominees this year to join the state hall, located at the State Capitol in Lincoln. Twenty of the 23 people who testified said it was time that Malcolm X, who was born as Malcolm Little in Omaha in 1925, should be inducted. One testifier, Creighton University journalism professor emeritus Eileen Wirth, said both Malcolm X and Louise Pound, University of Nebraska professor and author, should be enshrined. Advocates for Malcolm X said he had been honored in many cities, through the naming of schools and streets, and was celebrated in a Hollywood movie and an autobiography by Alex Haley, but still he had not gotten the recognition he deserves in the state of his birthplace.

Looks like something more substantial may be happening here.

https://nebraskaexaminer.com/briefs/mal ... dentified/
The Malcolm X Cultural Center redevelopment project in North Omaha has taken a key step forward with the selection of a San Francisco-based architecture and design firm to lead planning and transformation of the 17-acre site that marks the birthplace of the slain human rights leader.

Gensler, a global company with about 6,000 professionals, developed its proposal in partnership with Omaha’s Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture and Practice of Democracy, based in Trenton, New Jersey, according to the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, which announced the selection this week.

Buoyed by a $20 million state grant awarded in 2024, the redevelopment site is envisioned to be a national cultural and civic tourist destination.

About time. For someone with such prominence I've always been surprised with how little he's recognized locally.

Ambitious project here to say the least.

https://nebraskapublicmedia.org/en/news ... stination/
Ambitious plans call for a $120 million mixed-use campus to rise on the site of Malcolm X’s birthplace in North Omaha.

The project, led by the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation, would place a cultural center and museum at 34th and Evans streets. Future phases include affordable housing units, a financial incubator, public green space and a hotel.

Oh wow, that's quite impressive. That could end up being a pretty solid anchor for the area, and would synergize nicely with the Belt Line. Also, yet another multimillion dollar investment in a cultural institution for the city in the last 5 years.

Going back looking at this thread, it provides an interesting timeline and list of parties involved.

Something awfully fishy is going on here.....
