More recognition for Randy Brown

Post by eomaha »

The well known Randy Brown structure at 120th and Blonda (I didn't realize it was called... 120BLOndo ?) has been published in Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture

Image
What 120BLOndo is, everyone agrees, is different. An eruption of modern architecture in the middle of Stripmallsville.

"This building was a polemic," says Brown, assuming I know exactly what polemic means. (An aggressive attack on or refutation of the opinions or principles of another.)

"It was to get people to look at office buildings and ask why do all of them have a band of brick, a band of glass and a band of brick, surrounded by asphalt?

"Why are all the suburban buildings so ugly? So banal?"

The building - which also houses his father's law firm, his family's development company and American Express Financial Advisors - brought Brown fans all over the world. It won numerous awards and was featured in many architecture magazines.

"For some reason, the Germans and Italians really like it."

As the finest example of deconstructionist architecture in Omaha, I've always really liked that building.

To my knowledge, it's the ONLY example of deconstructionist architecture in Omaha. Which still says a lot. It's not a common style. I wish it were in a cooler, more appropriate area, though.

the building out on 168th and dodge (east across 168th st from VP...the bronze-ish one) is quasi-deconstructionist.

I'd put that one a little more solidly in the classic moderne category. But I see what you're getting at.

Yes, but it doesn't do either style justice...by its very nature.

Randy Brown is building a Spaceship house about 135th and Fort Street. Its in that little housing development "Hidden Creek" that he started quite a while ago. His house will be the 4th in the development.

Is that the one with the driveway right off of Fort? Long rectangle boxes on top of each other? If so that one is taking forever to build. I think it started when I was teaching over on that side of town and that is almost 2 yrs ago.
