EXHIBITION DESCRIPTIONS:
Helen Brough: Cataclysmic Hypotheses
Whether melting polar ice caps and tsunamis, forest fires and
earthquakes or hurricanes and massive floods, we live in an age in
which the atmosphere seems increasingly beyond human control. Artist
Helen Brough posits what effects global warming may have on the
disintegration of civilization and translates her own vague,
unconscious dreams of catastrophes and merges them with haunting
recollections of disasters seen in film, television, newspapers or the
web.
Catherine Ferguson: Natural Figurations
For Natural Figurations, Catherine Ferguson created a group of
sculptural, truncated torsos constructed of dogwood, willow, bronze
and steel. While working in a Bemis Center studio, she also produced
two interrelated series of drawings that touch on nature?s
structural unevenness. Says the artist: ?My work relates to
?shaping? space, containing space and defining space.? These
torsos are about an idealized human shape, the ?transformed?
body ? standing still but full of life.? Ferguson created the
work for Natural Figurations under the auspices of the Bemis
Center?s Community Artist Fellowship. The artist was awarded the
grant in 2005 in recognition of her extensive artistic contributions
to the community, and this exhibition comprises the culmination of her
award.
? Special thanks and recognition go to Karen & Robert Duncan for
their generous support of the Bemis Center?s Community Artist
Fellowship Program and to Kristen & Mark Pluhacek for their individual
sponsorship of Catherine Ferguson?s Natural Figurations. ?
Amanda Knowles: Aggregation
For all the chaos and disarray that seem to exist in the natural
world, order and harmony reign. And while science seeks to represent
and analyze many of nature?s congruous qualities, it doesn?t
manage to convey the overwhelming beauty of the organized structure
inherent in organic life. Artist Amanda Knowles captures this
powerful beauty in all its pristine precision by taking scientific
information and re-contextualizing it until she achieves a visual
translation through art.
Michele Kong: Critical Density
Critical density is what keeps the universe together. According to
cosmologists, critical density is the delicate and perfect force of
gravity necessary for life as we know it: any greater, and the
universe might collapse; any less, and matter might spread out so
thinly that nothing would exist. And critical density is precisely
what artist Michele Kong brings to her intricate, fragile and finely
calibrated work.
? Special thanks and recognition go to Davis Erection Company for
their generous support of Michele Kong?s Critical Density. ?
Building A Legacy: 1985 ? 2007
Since the Bemis Center?s founding twenty-five years ago, close to
700 artists have come to Omaha, NE to experiment, innovate and
create. Building a Legacy showcases the most phenomenal works created
by our Artists-in- Residence, and we are proud to present some of the
most recent, cutting- edge additions to this growing legacy. Whether
Kyoko Tokumaru?s finely- crafted porcelain sculptures, John
Fraser?s delicate collages or Hope Tucker?s video art, the works
on display indicate the exciting and eclectic blend of creativity that
occurs behind our studio doors each and every day.
Thanks a bunch
Mark
