On Thursday, January 18, the public is invited to a Gallery Talk to hear what past Artists-in-Residence Littleton Alston and Santiago Cal have to say about their creative experiences in the center’s studios. Bemis Center Assistant Director and Curator Jeremy Stern also provides his perspectives on a program that has brought over 600 artists from all over the world to live, work and create in Omaha. This Gallery Talk takes place at 4:00 p.m., and this event is free and open to the public.

From paintings to performance art, Building a Legacy offers a glimpse at the creative process that often takes place when artists have the time and the freedom to experiment for extended periods of time. Over thirty artists pass through the Bemis Center’s studios every year, and as part of their residency, they donate piece of work as their artistic legacy to the Center. For this reason, the Bemis Center has a wealth of contemporary art to share with the community, and Creighton University’s Lied Gallery is showing art from the Center’s vaults typically not seen by the public. Highlighted works include two sculptural works created at the Bemis Center by Gallery Talk participant Littleton Alston, one of the earliest Artists-in-Residency, who today is an associate professor in Creighton’s Visual Arts Department.
