UNO 2008 tentative schedule:
http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1 ... d=10245523
So I wonder what is in store for UNO football this fall. We've already seen a handful of players head to UNL with the apparent revitalization of the walk-on program. It was no secret that the Callahan Regime's approach to walk-ons benefited both UNO and Kearney. I'm thinking that the run of playoff appearances might be in jeopardy.

Ticket Express is offering NU-Baylor tickets (11:30 AM tomorrow) at below face value, with lower level east and west stadium starting at $49.
Of course, this probably means you could walk around the stadium and get free tickets pretty easily if you wanted.

I am surprised there is no 2008 Nebraska Football thread.
By way - the big surprise of the day - Syracuse beat Notre Dame
which means NU may just get the Gator Bowl bid and possibly play either Miami or Florida State!

Congrats to former Nebraska player, coach and legend Turner Gill.
His Buffalo Bulls just clinched the MAC East (Friday night) and will play in the MAC championship game on 12/5. They became bowl eligible last week and will likely go to their first bowl game... ever.

Speaking of Syracuse... there's plenty of talk of Gil possibly getting that job.

I think the Turner Gill/Buffalo story really is that great. Buffalo was the Kansas St (remember those days) of Division I football. Well known for that matter to be the worst program in the nation. To go from there to division title is phenomenal. With Willingham and Prince's firings that will leave only 4 of what 119 African American Head Coaches - every school searching for a HC will have to look at Gill. Syracuse would be an obvious fit, but you have to wonder about Tennessee or Auburn and even the Golden Domers. Though I really doubt that Weis will be gone after this year - even after the Syracuse game. They would have to pay him off big time - even if they have that kind of money.

Success at a school like Syracuse will earn Gil a shot at a Notre Dame or Tennessee. It ain't going to happen coming from Buffalo. Remember, this is the MAC we're talking about here (the really crappy division of the MAC no less).
I wish Turner all the best... but I think he's going to have to continue to prove himself before he lands one of the premier jobs in college football. There are many other candidates out there who AD's would feel more confident in hiring (coming from BCS schools... or at least schools who have crashed the 'BCS party'). Turner doesn't even have a win over a BCS school.
Hopefully by the time Gil does get that next level opportunity... and has the same success... he'll be ready to accept the Nebraska job if Bo doesn't pan out.

I was being half smarty pants with the ND job for Gill...
...but only half. That's why I said if he times it right. I don't think Weis is going anywhere in the next 2-3 years barring a TOTAL meltdown - like stringing together 2-3 seasons of 6 or less wins. One of the talking heads (Herbstreit?) made a point a week or so ago saying that Notre Dame has averaged only 7 wins a season over the last 15 years (my stats might be a little off, but it was pretty sobering if you're a Notre Dame fan).
IMO, it makes ZERO sense for Gill to go to Syracuse. Anything he does there he'll already have done at Buffalo: take a TERRIBLE program from a mediocre conference (I know the BEast is BCS, but it is mediocre at best) and make them decent. Gill might be in place now for a Boise or Utah or something like that if they were open. I thought he had a legit shot at KSU until they announced the Crazy Old |expletive| was coming back tonight (Snyder).
There's almost no incentive for an up-and-coming non-BCS coach to go to a bad BCS team. Bad BCS teams without budgets (Baylor, Kentucky, Washington, Wazzu, ISU, etc.) are for the failed coaches of good BCS schools, or the first time head coaches from major BCS powers. If I'm Gill, I don't leave Buffalo for any school that hasn't had serious success in the last eight years.
I honestly think Gill is the next head coach at Nebraska, regardless of Pelini's reasoning for leaving - failure or success.
edit: OK, you have to be kidding me... I typed in "Ken-tu-cky" and it edited to to "Bluffs"?

Gerry Faust, yeah, I guess there isn't any more a meteoric rise than that, huh.
Yeah, hopefully (well, not really... I hope they continue to go down the crapper!) ND is starting to learn something from their past coaching pick mistakes... although Willingham would have seemed to have been a good selection. Just goes to show you what a |expletive| shoot it is.
Syracuse would be a great BCS school to go to... because they ARE in a weaker conference (and apparently they've got at least as good a group of athletes as Notre Dame). Win a couple of non-conference games, run the conference table and who knows where you could end up at seasons end.

I would disagree. Although Syracuse sucks now, they do have a strong history and a strong fanbase, which Buffalo does not. They also have the advantage in being in the Big East. If you can get hot in conference you are in a BCS game. Sure, you might not be one of the top teams in the nation, but you are in and that is what counts. They also have a lot of wealthy alumni there that would pay big bucks for a winning coach. Look at what they can pay Jim Boeheim for basketball, there is no reason why they can't do the same with football.Big E wrote: IMO, it makes ZERO sense for Gill to go to Syracuse. But lets not get ahead of ourselves here. Before anointing him the next big thing in coaching we need to let him prove himself further. Winning a Bowl game at Buffalo would go a long way.
Edit. Looks like Jeff wrote the same thing. My bad.

Wow you really have no |expletive| clue what your talking about do you, we have sucked for 4 years, heck Nebraska has sucked for four years to. Syracuse should have been the 1987 national champs if it wasnt for Auburn going for a freaking tie instead of going for the win, that gave Syracuse a 11-0-1 record costing them at least a share of the title. Lets see 10 years ago we were playing in the Fiesta bowl and then the Orange bowl the next year.Big E wrote:I was being half smarty pants with the ND job for Gill...

Maybe you have heard of these players. Donovan Mcnabb, Marvin Harrison, Ron Konrd, Dwight Freeney, Keith Bullock, Don McPherson, Larry Csonka, Jim Brown and THE ERNIE DAVIS. All of those are Hall of famers or future hall of famers, I wouldnt say a "Terrible program" has that many hall of famers.
Oh yeah dont forget the Hollywood motion picture the Express this year, that was about Syracuse and the 1959 National Championship team and Ernie Davis. I dont see any movies being made about Nebraska football, I can imagine them though, for example. "The Jet, the Story of how Johnny Rodgers would rob conveniencee stores and brag about his Heisman, then they would have a laser eye surgery commercial in it to". How about " The Quiter, the Eric Crouch story of how he sucked at QB so he was a baby and quit", and lets not forget "LP, A truly motivational story of how LP beat women.
Seriously I would love Gill but the problem with Gill is that once Bo does leave the F-U-S-K-E-R-S, the cuse will be looking for a new Coach.Right now I would rather have Skip Holtz or Randy Edsall from Uconn.
And calling out the Big East, we have had one bad year, I mean if it wasnt for Pitt upsetting WVU last year WVU would have been the National Champs. Hey lets not forget this stat, the past 4 years the BE is 4-0 in BCS games, 4-0, one of those against OU from the Little 12. I love how the Little 12 has one great year and they are the SEC now. The ACC stole two of our best teams and lied to Syracuse and now the ACC is in worse shape than the BE, I mean the ACC is obviously worse then BE this year again.
One more stat for the heck of it. Syracuse leads the all time series with UNL 7-5 with 4 wins in Lincoln and a win over a Husker team ranked #1 in the nation, I mean how could a horrible program beat the "ALMIGHTY F-U-S-K-E-R-S".
This is why I hate husker fans, arrogance.

Dude, chill out and please quit being such a |expletive| toolbox all the time.
Syracuse is currently a terrible program with a great history. By your reasoning, the Carlisle Indian School should challenge for a BCS game next season.
With the exception of me saying that I think Gill will be the next head coach at Nebraska - which certainly doesn't preclude him from going someplace else in the meantime - that post had NOTHING to do with Nebraska or the B12, or any other conference aside from the BEast - which, technically, could have its BCS status reviewed soon (based on conference champions' final BCS rankings - I can't find the actual rule, but the BEast is perilously close to it).
And learn the difference between "to" and "too", "your" and "you're", and a |expletive| comma and a period, for Christ's sake.
edit: Link to the BCS rules:

It changed on me a little bit since the last time I read it, so I'm not sure if my statement above is still valid. I'm almost certain there used to be a quantifiable criteria for automatic conference review.

Man - CU seems to always play us tough no matter how much we are favored. Was it 18 today.
If Henery would have missed that 57 yarder that would have been a tough loss to swallow.
I hope Suh doesn't go pro next year. NU really will need his presence after Potter leaves.

I wouldn't say CU played us tough... as much as we laid down the first 5 minutes... and literally gave them the ball a couple more occasions (I still can't believe Bo decided to go back to the fake field goal well so soon). It shouldn't have been that close. And how about Helu... he is awesome.

I'm excited for and terrified of next year. They've shown so much improvement under Pelini compared to Callahan. Last year's team would have lost to KU and CU after the mid-season collapse.
At the same time, they have next to zero experience at QB and to call the secondary "Swiss cheese" would be an insult to the Swiss.

Well if we are just going by Sears trophies (are they still called that) then it looks like you guys only have three.
Which means Syracuse loses its one national title cause there was no Sears trophy which kind of ruins my argument.

Just think of them as our three national titles of the modern era.
The crystal football topping each (now the American Football Coaches Association trophy)... has become the Wimbledon trophy or Stanley Cup of NCAA D1 football.

I gotta tell you, now that I live in Michigan they haven't given up on the 1997 trophy. The main arguement here is that Missouri beat Nebraska and were it not for the fluke kick all would be right with the world. Also they figure the vote for Nebraska was sympathy for Osborne and he lobbied on tv for it. My comeback is always "Well, whatever but I don't think NU is going to give the trophy back, so scoreboard."icejammer wrote:Actually, that would be 3 and 2 halves. Not to mention Hoke (from Ball St) going to SDSU (as in, "we've sucked since Marshall Faulk left" SDSU).Brad wrote:Interesting... 5 and 19 Chizik hired by Auburn.
I think Gill made a wise move staying at Buffalo for a year or two (or is lucky no one else hired him, however it worked out). He has job security there for as long as he wants it, whereas he'd be gone in 3 or 4 if he didn't pan out at an Auburn or Syracuse kind of place. If he can put together a couple more 7,8,9-win seasons at Buffalo and prove this year as a whole was no fluke (although the MAC championship game certainly was), he might be in line for one of the big-dog places and a seven-figure paycheck.
