Scanner Frequencies
I recently purchased a handheld scanner (for a NASCAR race) and have been fooling around with it the past few days. I have been looking for sites that list local frequencies - but they tend to be either old or pay sites.
Does anyone have a list of locally used channels? And maybe UP and BNSF freqs?

Allan probably has them.
I am not sure about the police these days. I think you have to have a special scanner anymore, but I am not sure.
What happened to the one guy that had the sarpy county scanner?

It has been some time ago, but when I needed to look one up I used the FCC search function.

They are one of the largest scanner hobby sites out there. They have a frequency database that is pretty extensive and updated regularly. You won't be able to listen to Omaha police because they are digital, but there is tons of other stuff to listen to depending on your interest.

I have been listening to the police scanner a bunch lately while I work on the computer. http://www.bbscanner.com/
Does anyone have a description of the the codes mean?
I understand that 1 Adam 29, 1 Baker 29, and 1 Paul 29 are officers, but whats the difference between Adam, Baker, and Paul. Also, what does the 1 in front mean because its not always 1.

I am really surprised that Omaha is still on an analog radio system where a scanner is useful. As I understand it most police agencies have switched to scrambled systems or digital systems where the home scanner is rendered useless. 15 years ago when i was in Cedar Rapids IA they made the change and there was an uproar. There was a lot in the media about comparable departments that had made the change and the reasons for it and this was a few years back obviously.Brad wrote:I have been listening to the police scanner a bunch lately while I work on the computer. http://www.bbscanner.com/

Just because it's not analog doesn't mean you can't listen to it. Many police/fire/etc systems employ a trunked system, which is somewhat like your spread spectrum phone of the 90's. The latest, and more well-funded, departments use a digital radio system, but there are also radios available to listen to those as well.nebugeater wrote:I am really surprised that Omaha is still on an analog radio system where a scanner is useful. True but from my knowledge of this a radio / scanner to listen to this type of transmission is more costly and will take a lot of the casual "for entertainment" people out of the equation.almighty_tuna wrote:Just because it's not analog doesn't mean you can't listen to it. I purchased a digital, repeater based radio system to replace the one at work at the first of the year so I have done a little research on this. Glad I wasn't paying out of pocket for the system that I bought.

The first number identifies the precinct that unit is located in. I believe Northwest is "1", Northeast is "2", Southwest is "3", and Southeast "4", but I might have that mixed up.Brad wrote:I have been listening to the police scanner a bunch lately while I work on the computer. http://www.bbscanner.com/

"Adams" are cruisers with 1 officer in them, "Bakers" are cruisers with two officers and "Pauls" are narcotics/gang officers if I'm not mistaken. The number after the call sign is the unit number that identifies the individual officer(s).
For instance 1Adam29 is a single officer patrol in the Northwest Precinct, and 2Baker29 is a double officer patrol in the Northeast Precinct.
This page has a pretty long list of codes and signals, but I'm not sure how accurate they are.

Just a heads up that if you go to the link below you can stream the Omaha Police Scanner from the web using a bunch of different programs, including iTunes. They also have it set up now with alpha tags so you can see what channel is broadcasting.
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?ctid=1678
It also appears I had the southern precincts mixed up. Southeast is 3, and Southwest is 4.

The more I listen, I am positive the first number does not refer to the precinct. The last number like Adam 29, the number refers to the the part of town. I know the low numbers start in the north west and go clockwise around the city. If I had to guess, the First number refers to the shift. If you turn it on before midnight you here a lot of 3 adam and 3 baker, later at night, you hear mostly 1 adam and 1 baker calls.Bosco55David wrote: The first number identifies the precinct that unit is located in. I'm pretty certain the first number corresponds to the precinct. I was listening all last night and heard units with each number before their call sign. Also, OPD designates their shifts with letters, not numbers. IE; "A Shift" "B Shift" and "C Shift".Brad wrote:The more I listen, I am positive the first number does not refer to the precinct. Adam 16 is always by my house. Last night it was 3 Adam 16. Earlier in the week (later at night) it was 1 Adam 16. Both calls were near 90th and Maple

I listened again and now I do agree with you Brad. The first number must be the shift.

I am the owner of that feed on Radio Reference and I know all the codes, signals, and radio procedures (along with other OPD things) and the first number is the shift. 1 = Midnights, 2 = Days, 3 = Evenings, 4 = Some special swing shift. I have added Alpha tags, so use a client that accepts it. I have also started working on a website at http://www.omahascanner.com/ where I hope to put up a chat room and other feed related things.

The swing shift works "high priority" times. If you go to the Omaha Police Union website, you can view their current contract that spells out when the swing shift works.

Is anyone else using an hp all-in-one printer/scanner with MS EX4 on Snow Leopard. Have you been able to get it to scan? On my mac mini it tries to use the hp device manager and hpscanpro which Snow leopard does not use. Anyway around that?

Does anyone have the list of frequencies or where I would find them for Omaha police and fire?? I just purchased a scanner and they said they did the program for Douglas County but all I hear is NE state patrol and sheriffs once in a while.
If you know where I can find these please email me at [email protected]. Thank you very much.

Re: Scanner Frequencies
The weather scanners run on SAME frequency. The counties have certain ones. The OPD radio traffic has been scrambled via a Trunked system for years. Normal scanners don’t work on these.
You can look up Omaha on the National Weather Service website and then program your scanner.

Omaha area law enforcement dispatch isn't encrypted, but they are P25 digital systems. Encrypted talkgroups are available for tactical stuff, if needed.

Depending on your budget, the Uniden SDS100-hand held is an awesome scanner. I purchased mine from Amazon and there are programming services available for a charge. Or you if you want to support local, Randy's CB on Irvington Road sells & programs scanners.BC johns wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2020 4:48 pm Washington County and Blair PD went digital recently, what scanner would anyone recommend and how might I go about getting it programmed?
