For those of us old enough....remember in the early 70's when baby boomers were going to save the Earth from the ravages done by our parents. The birth of "ecology" and Earth Day. Then we figured out it was better to make lots of money creating mass amounts of disposibles and products with planned obsolescence. Now, suddenly, "green" is the new buzzword, and we are all going to save the earth before it is too late. Everything old IS new again.
Always a business-oriented city hungry for growth and focused on development with laser intensity, Omaha aimed high, reached for momentum and found critical mass.
This baby boomer is old enough to remember raw sewage being dumped into the Missouri River. Sewage treatment plants didn't exist yet. You couldn't go near the river because of the smell. I also remember how bad the air was back then, especially in the more industrial parts of the city. Unleaded gas didn't come along until 1974. It might not be perfect, but it's a heck of a lot better than it was. I'll let my generation take some credit for at least getting the ball rolling.
