Well, that didn't take long at all... I was guessing that was what was going on when I heard the cops and fire trucks heading out to the river, and they weren't going to Ricks, but rather the boat dock behind it.
I know that they had this in mind when designing it - with the higher railings and setbacks of the walkways from the edge. Hopefully this doesn't become a regular occurrence. Maybe they'll have the downtown Segway cops do regular patrols out that way (as they do currently at HofA park), as I saw him speed his way up there after the couple of cop cars tonight.... Really amusing sight, actually. Cop cars doing 30 or 40, with the poor Segway making it there a couple of minutes later doing its measly 10 mph.

If he hadn't jumped by the time the cops got there, he either wasn't serious and just wanted the attention, or he's just a confused individual and doesn't know what he's doing.

I would have just had a boat down there waiting for him to bail, not sent out 4 firetrucks, 2 ambulances and all those cops. I still don't think that fall is fatal.

No kidding... I would simply directed him over to the 480 bridge.

Way to go Brad. Now everyone loves the bridge! Awesome civic duty!

Well, I wondered how long it would take before someone figured this would just be another bridge to jump off of.....guess it wasn't enough to have the Morman, 480, I-80 and S. Omaha Bridges. Fred, I like your idea for the rescue nets.....

How often will "security" and "rescuers" be dispatched, and how much is it costing every time they do??? Sounds like this could get expensive.

I've asked this before: How high is the fence? Why isn't it totally enclosed with fencing? It should be. There's a lot of people that have crazy ideas.

he could have done this just as easily on the mormon bridge, 480 bridge, up bridge, 80 bridge, etc. if he was serious about committing suicide, he would have done it. He was just looking for attention.

He was sitting on a railing? So does this mean there will NOT be any barriers on the railings? From the picture, it does look like just a railing, nothing else there to prevent someone climbing up and jumping or falling off. If that's the case, WHERE were the designers' minds? That's an accident or tragedy waiting to happen - suicide attempts, kids climbing up and falling, etc.. I hope there's a huge liability policy on this bridge, because the first time someone falls or jumps off, even if it's due to their own stupidity or carelessness, you can bet the family will file a lawsuit.

These peoples' posts on the WOWT board are frustrating. Why is it that people who lack common sense ALWAYS have to write letters? They're usually the only ones who do. I remember one time there was a lady who wrote a letter to the Public Pulse in the World Herald about how she was convinced the architects of the West Dodge Expressway had screwed up because there was no way that traffic on the 120th street bridge would be able to pass under the expressway. Instead of looking to see if perhaps it might be up for demolition, she skipped that step, decided that she must certainly be right about the matter, and wrote a letter.
Back in 2000 they complained that the Qwest Center would be unsuccessful. Proven wrong, they are now convinced that the new pedestrian bridge will attract muggers (ones who are attracted to bright flamboyant public areas with lots of people no less) which will, in turn, make the Qwest Center unsuccessful. Oh and one man is afraid that he will be pushed off the bridge over the neck high railing by a stranger. Ridiculous.

On June 25 I noted:
And forgive me, but as someone who has had extensive experience in the mental health arena while working as an attorney in mental health board commitment hearings for several years, I don't find any humor in these types of stories. There are a lot of very troubled people living in our society, and many/most cannot afford the medications needed to lead normal lives. It is one more side effect of our health care crisis. Most of these people have families who have tried and tried to get help for their loved ones, but without great insurance coverage or tens of thousands of dollars in money laying around, these people are often destined to slip between the cracks. It can take something like an incident on a bridge to get them into inpatient treatment.
I don't design bridges for a living. I realize it is difficult to make anything suicide proof. Heck, people kill themselves using can openers. But....couldn't the designers of this bridge done the taxpayers a little bitty favor and at least made it darn difficult to climb over the fences? Something simple like raising the fences up a foot or two higher might have done the trick. And saved us all the the extra police overtime.nativeomahan wrote:I hope that the designers have already taken into account the suicide issue! ...

Why don't we start putting tunnels around every street so people don't fling themselves into traffic? Why don't we put pillows down on the ground everywhere to cushion the falls of people jumping off buildings? THe world is a crazy place but for the most part things all go according to plan.

While I generally acknowledge Bill Maher as funny yet kooky, he said one of the most insightful things about this type of thing:
"I'm tired of arranging my world around what the stupidest people might do."

I would actually agree with that, but replace marriage with monogamy (after all, many/most marriages are not monogamous). Monogamy is unnatural for a species trying to survive, which is what we were for hundreds of thousands of years.Stargazer wrote:He has said time and time again that men were 'never meant' to be monogamous... and marriage is therefore 'unnatural'.
"Can't" be monogamous is a different issue.
But oh well... we digress.
