New WOWT Channel 6 set?

I am guessing since John and Tracy are giving the news infront of a green screen and Jim's weather office is now a folding table, Channel 6 must be getting a new set?

Is sweeps coming up?

Just keep forgetting to post it... Screw a news chopper, we need a commercial chopper so I can get back up in the air.

Non of the local news cast are in HD. It is rumored over on AVS forums that the WOWT set is part of a move to HD at least from a studio's broadcast portion of the news. Who knows if the $$$ will be invested so that all new field video will be in HD.

The federally mandated transition to digital that we're all hearing about really has nothing to do with HD. You can have analog HD (high def) and SD (standard def) and digital HD and SD. HD vs SD is simply better resolution, color depth, frame rate and aspect ratio... nothing more.

The sad thing about these local news stations having not switched to HD yet is that the HD minicam you can get at Best Buy for $1000 has a better picture than the $X0,000 SD BetaCam cameras those guys lug around. (Yes, professional video is the last bastion of Beta).

On camera talent tends to resist the switch to HD as well, because HD exposes so many more flaws that SD could not. The make-up and lighting people love it, though, because it makes their job that much more important.

I am fairly sure that Action3 has some HD field cameras. I think I remember Travis Justice dropping one when he ran on to the Ice at a lancer game. He said something about dropping a brand new $30,000 camera.

Doesn't have to be HD to be $30K. Those broadcast cameras are some serious ching.

The owner of channel 6 (Gray Television) announced earlier this year they were purchasing HD equipment for their news departments.

http://broadcastengineering.com/eng/gra ... s_21_0423/

Channel 6 has already shown a commercial with their old set filmed in 16:9 widescreen format. So I'd be shocked if WOWT doesn't turn on HD local news next month.

I get 3.1 and 7.1 and 7.2 but can't pick up 6.2.

Since the weather has been crappy I haven't been able to get any of the digital channels except some PBS Iowa ones.

I take it you have one of those over the air Digital antennas? Does it work like a cable box where you old TV is on channel 4 and you have a converter to tune the channels?

Will I understand with HD you don't need a green screen anymore, but otherwise why do they need a new set just for HD?

They don't "need" one. Just like they don't "need" to have an updated skyline shot with the FNB in it.

You still need to be able to key out the background (ie, separate the subject from the green screen).

I can explain this better over bourbon.

Channel 6's set could just as easily be the set for a TV news show in Toledo or Tupelo. There are no photos of Omaha, which is disappointing to say the least. And no HD so far.

People seem to be really upset that WOWT is not on 87.7 because of the digital switch. I know I will miss it.

What Happened To WOWT on 87.7 ?
www.wowt.com wrote:Many Channel 6 News viewers have discovered an unwanted side effect of the switch to digital TV. The audio signal from Channel 6 can no longer be heard at 87.7 on the FM radio spectrum.

To understand why this happened we have to talk a little bit about broadcast science.

TV and Radio stations use designated areas of the electromagnetic spectrum, set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), to broadcast their signals. The area designated for TV Channel 6 ended at 88 MHz (megahertz) on the spectrum. The area designated for FM radio begins at 88 MHz.

This created a special benefit for Channel 6 TV stations all over the country because the audio they broadcast could be heard on many FM radios at 87.7. Over many years that WOWT-TV was broadcasting an analog signal people became used to listening to the station in their cars and on portable radios.

February 17, 2009, WOWT-TV along with hundreds of other TV stations across the United States stopped broadcasting an ANALOG signal. The DIGITAL signal we are broadcasting is at a completely different place on the spectrum. That's why Channel 6 can no longer be heard at 87.7 on the radio.

As we move deeper into the digital age Channel 6 News is pioneering many new avenues for keeping our viewers informed. News and information updates are available on the Internet, on cell phones, in emails, and through our Desktop Alert system. Information on all of these can be found right here on our web channel. Just check out the information on the left-hand side of our home page.

Channel Sux never mentioned it once during their incessant coverage of the impending switch. I told family about it about a month ago, and they were surprised to hear about it.

It has been mentioned several times during newscasts. Traditional FM radio is analog anyway, what did you expect w/a transition to a digital signal? Even if they kept the digital signal on 87.7 you wouldn't be able to dial it up on your radio.

That's probably correct. Sux is my 3rd choice for local TV news; 5th if you consider radio and the newspaper.
Most of the estimated 200 phone calls received through late afternoon, along with a few dozen comments on the company Web site, concerned the loss of the station's audio simulcast on 87.7 FM. Because it used the station's analog audio signal, it also went off the air at noon.

UPDATE: What Happened To WOWT on 87.7 ?

http://www.wowt.com/home/headlines/40804422.html
www.wowt.com wrote:WOWT-TV has been exploring ways to return Channel 6 and NBC programming to local radio airwaves. While the station has a tentative agreement on the local level, WOWT must now wait for a decision from NBC before moving forward.

WOWT General Manager Charlie Peterson said Thursday, "The decision is in NBC's hands at this point; WOWT has done everything we can from a local stand point. Now we are told we cannot proceed without the network’s permission."

While WOWT can make decisions about the material it produces, the station does NOT have the legal right to retransmit copyrighted material produced by the NBC Network or its program suppliers. Peterson indicated the station has been in talks with NBC for several weeks trying to convince the network to allow WOWT to retransmit NBC audio. So far the network's attorneys have not made a decision.

Was it in HD or just a 16 X 9 format. I heard from someone else that it was a format step only but I did not see it myself.
