Matt Perrault is out at Big Sports 590?

Don't know what happened to Matt Perrault, but apparently he is out at Big Sports 590. This sucks! He had a great Show!

Here is his response to the rumors on "The Bluejay Cafe"

I didn't bounce over on Friday. Was he on then?

I have been on record as not being a MP fan but there are parts of his show that I had grown to like a little. He was good for Omaha radio even though I prefer 1620

Speaking of buffoons - who is this new kid on 590 from 6-9 pm - and why does the overnight only have clips from earlier shows - that I have already heard. Sports radio is sure taking a beating lately.

I have it on overnight a lot on 590 for FOX sports radio. The whole overnight format has taken a |expletive| in the last month after much of the overnight crew got dumped on a national level. Now in the early AM they are doing clips of highlights and commenting on them from the other shows during the day.

By the way, if anyone has a MAC please see my plea for help in the MAC thread tonight!

Wish I could help ya nebugeater - but I haven't gone Mac yet. Once XP goes by the way side - I won't be upgrading to Vista unless they come out with a better version.

Petros sucks. Since when has Sports talk turned into |expletive| bad loud mouthed humor. I want provocative analysis not anal |expletive|.

I'm not saying this is why he is gone, but I always thought that his anti-Nebraska basketball mentality along with pretty much only talking about Creighton basketball was going to hurt him. Creighton is the better team but I would be willing to bet that more of his listeners are Husker fans.

If you listened.... He talked a lot about Nebraska, not as much as Creighton since 590 is the HOME of Creighton sports, but still plenty. When 1620 and 1110 talked NU, you had to do something different.

Actually I did listen, he talked about Nebraska football, not basketball. He criticized Nebraska basketball, he called Doc "slingblade" and often criticized him.

I am not taking the MP side but you are contradicting yourself.

First you said he only talked pretty much CU basketball. Now you say he talked Huskers too.
Then you say he only talked Husker Football but then you say he criticized Husker basketball. Had to be talking about it to Criticize it.

I for one don't agree with a lot of what he says but He did / does Talk Huskers. It just may not be the Rosy picture that most want to here. Did he go over the top for reaction, sure that is his job. To say that he is a CU homer, that is also true but get real he is on the radio home of CU basketball.

I was talking strictly about basketball, it is well known he talked positively about Creighton basketball and Nebraska football.

I wasn't a huge fan but if they replace him with some local homer I will listen even less. His outside of Omaha perspective was his best asset.

This is just speculation... but I bet its a budget cutting move. It would not surprise me at all if they switch to some nationally syndicated show like the drive on fox and eliminate Matt's salary.

I think the management at Journal has changed a couple of times over the last several years since Matt has been here.

Perrault lost me when he went crazy last year criticizing NU for playing at Qwest against Oregon. Wasn't like CU got bumped or anything it was an open date and good for DT Omaha.

He comes from a part of the country where you HATE your rival and you would never let your instate rival do something like that. I think Omaha is a very odd place when it comes to sports. Not many states have the situations we have. Only 1 D1 football, a school that has everything D1, a school that is good in D1 basketball but no D1 football, the major public school in town is D2, and the fact we don't have pro sports.

Immature host, low ratings, bad show. Only surprise is that it lasted this long.

However, I do hope that eventually KXSP tries a local sports show again. Just because a bad show with a bad host failed doesn't mean that a second local sports talk show couldn't work. Maybe try a morning show.

I joined with a bunch of people on the Bluejay Cafe and I have emailed all the Journal Broadcast execs letting them know my feelings on the subject! I hope there is something that can be done!

Why does this |expletive| always get blamed on me. I did not have anything to do with the deletion! I thought it was hilarious! The Admin over ruled and removed them. I find it funny how such a "Prominent" program is so freaking sensitive....

Sports talk can be fun if it is a good mix of all different sports and pop culture, aka Jim Rome and sometimes Matt's show. Granted I do turn if off from time to time when they talk pointless stuff like recruiting and other off season stuff.

I never really got that upset, just more didn't understand his motivation. How the he11 are you going to badtalk Nebraska Basketball and then praise the football team?? In the end (well actually the entire time if you saw his horrible ratings) this combination proved not to work.

You can't blame it on the ratings if you look at the big picture...
1. Its Nebraska and a large number of people listen to KFAB by default.
2. We have one of the top country stations in the country.
3. There are a large number of republicans here and I am sure Hanity and O'Riley take some listeners
4. We don't have a lot of sports talk listeners to begin with.

So comparing Apples and Apples, 590 and 1620.
A. They both have lower ratings than the others
B. They have flopped back and fourth between 1 and 2. Last HUSKER football season 590 was #1.

I am not sure, but I would guess its the economy more than anything.

It's too bad that with the signal and coverage area of Big Sports 590 that they couldn't make money with Matt's show. I listen to 590 alot on my drive home from work and 590 replaces Matt with another national show, I might as well remove 590 from the presets on my car radio.

Was Matt a tool at times? Sure he was, especially during the Callahan years, but over the last year, i've really enjoyed Matt's show.

Brad,

1620's afternoon drive show, Usportsmanlike Conduct, is #1 in men for that time-slot. It's killing in the ratings. I think Matt's show had a hard time breaking the top 10 for men in his timeslot. I'm not a huge fan of 1620, but they actually do focus attention on the NFL, MLB, and even the NBA as well as College Baseball and local Hockey. And they've been quick to criticize the Huskers in the past. They also have solid guests that we can all see on TV (Bilas, Gottlieb, Legler, Harold Reynolds, etc.) and they generally do a good job. Their schtick does wear this after a while though.

Matt's show just wasn't very good, at all. His guests weren't very good and he's a poor interviewer.

My feeling is that Journal is going to switch formats. With a signal like that, they can't afford to keep putting stuff out that nobody will listen to.

Just to reiterate, Matt's show didn't fail because he didn't praise the Huskers every segment. Matt's show failed because it just wasn't a very good show.
