August 7, 2009

The University of Nebraska at Omaha has changed the start times for all Friday home hockey games at the Qwest Center Omaha. All Friday games will now begin at 7:30 p.m., one half-hour later than originally scheduled.

"We have made this move in an effort to be more fan-friendly," said Mike Kemp, associate athletic director. "Because of the increased commuting time in Omaha during work days, this change will allow our fans more time to get home, gather their families and arrive at the arena in time for the opening faceoff."

The new start times also will affect the Mutual of Omaha Icebreaker tournament. The first game of the tournament on Friday, Oct. 9 will begin at 4:35 p.m., with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell taking on St. Lawrence. The Mavericks game against Army will begin at 7:35 p.m.

The Mavericks' season-opening game against the University of Lethbridge on Monday, Oct. 5 also will start one half-hour later, at 7:35 p.m.

Season tickets for UNO hockey are on sale now through the UNO athletic ticket office. For more information, or to order, call 402-554-MAVS.

After a spring/summer of great news, now some bad moves... Apparently there will be no more hockey pep bad aka "Power Play". Apparently it was a budget thing, so I hope they can work it out some how. That's part of the college atmosphere.

A BUDGET thing?? I can't imagine there was any budget other than transportation. Give the band members a ticket and I'm sure they'll find their own way down there.

That's what I thought... I think Creighton's band is 100% volunteer.

While the band members might be free, I'm fairly sure that the band leader is a UNO staff member, and was probably getting paid. Plus, there may be rental fees for some of the audio equipment used and/or instrument rental costs - most of the large instruments (sousaphone, tuba, drum sets) are generally property of the university or are rented, as most schools want their marching ensembles / pep bands to be matching, and its fairly obvious on some of the larger equipment is from different manufacturers. Smaller instruments (wind/reed instruments, trumpets, etc) are generally property of the students...

Plus, transportation costs for students, equipment, etc. You get the picture. Its more than just a couple of students showing up and playing. There are some costs involved, even if they are relatively minimal.

The format will essentially stay the same as previous seasons. The show will feature new head coach Dean Blais. The tentative plan is to feature a player each week who had a "significant" impact in the preceding weekend series (as opposed to deciding the slate before the season starts).

He won't keep up that statistical pace in all likelihood. But a redshirt freshman (the USCHO site is wrong) goalie giving up under 1 goal a game is a pretty impressive start in his first college action. It would be akin to having a rookie pitcher going 3-1 with a 1.79 era in his first 4 starts.

Faulkner allowed one goal in each of his first two collegiate starts as Nebraska-Omaha won and tied a game at Colgate. Faulkner stopped 51 of 53 shots in the two games.

I'll withhold judgment until he faces the Phillies, Red Sox, and Yankees of the college hockey world.
