i noticed that in the picture of the paxton there are road barriers up. What is that about? Are they doing road work or are they finally starting the sidewalk improvements for the residences that are going in there?

My guess is that they are doing the sidewalk improvements, but I wondered that myself.

And projectman, the pictures don't lie. It WAS busy.

For some reason people tend to think my pedestrian shots are meant to deceive, like I photoshopped them in. Nope. I'm sorry to dissapoint some of you, but it ACTUALLY is pretty vibrant downtown. ;)

The barriers are up because they will be demolishing a couple small buildings (former jewelry store, etc.) aouth of the Paxton to make way for their parking garage.

Well, it's not new construction and I would think that they would have space enough inside for offices and equipment. But you never know. I guess we'll find out here.

Yeah, I guess you could put me in that group. Contemporary seems retro to me. And retro to styles I didn't like earlier. Mainly, I think some of this stuff will look so out of date and out of style in a very short period of time. I guess we will have to wait and see.

It may be just a parking garage, but it is new construction. They won't put the site trailer inside.

I think it may have to do more with contemporary archiTECTS not being very good. Although I would be willing to concede that this probably has more to do with the dollar than the artist.

We seem to have reverted to the utilitarian mindset of the 50s-70s with our major structures, with the unsettling influence of suburbia thrown in - sand, stone, and squatty boxes. It's really just a matter of time before skyscrapers are covered in vinyl siding.

I think it has more to do with the nature of development today. Architects no longer concentrate their efforts on aesthetically pleasing buildings. Rather, they are involved in various stages of the project: fitting the footprint of the buildings onto the tract per zoning, setbacks, floodplain, FAR, etc. requirements; designing the HVAC, mechanical, etc. systems; being part of the budgeting and pro forma; attending governmental/Planning and Architectural Review Board meetings (some jurisdictions). They are involved in so much today that it seems that emphasis of aesthetics has been removed from the equation.

I thought all that stuff was left up to the engineer and it was the architects job to strictly make it pretty?

Not anymore. The architects are involved in due diligence to ensure what is allowed and maximizing the footprint through build out of tenant improvements. They work with engineers and real estate professionals on many of the issues (maybe not the lead) but they must know and understand most aspects of the process and the design including pretty much all components of the building. It has gotten pretty technical and more removed from asesthetics.

Yeah, and what a waste not to have retail on the ground level, especially since historic structures were lost.

I really do think it should be ABSOLUTELY illegal to just build a parking garage with no active uses on the street level.

And similarly, I was looking through "Building for the Ages: Omaha's Architectural Landmarks" the other day, and it is just SO sad to look through the "structures lost" section. What throws salt on the wounds is to learn that many SIGNIFICANT BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURES in Omaha were torn down for city parking garages. That's disgusting.
