Sad to see another Omaha long-time restaurant close. In this case, it sounds like they are retiring.

Honestly, I wish them a happy retirement. I went several times after their last menu change and it had slipped a lot. Don’t think that I will miss it.

Driven bye it hundreds of times, never ate there. Looks to be fairly prime property.

We used to go there all the time, at least 2-3 times a month, but stopped going due to service issues. We went a couple weeks ago after having only been there once in the past 10 years. The food was okay and the service was okay. Nothing like it was when we visited more frequently. I miss the old Petrow's. This current incarnation, not so much.bigredmed1 wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2019 2:41 am Honestly, I wish them a happy retirement. I went several times after their last menu change and it had slipped a lot. Mostly, I found Petrow's to be "meh." Nothing to get excited over. If I'm in the immediate vicinity and it's mealtime then why not, but if I have to drive across town it's just not worth it. It was always just okay for me. I appreciate the history of the place, but I doubt the current incarnation has much in common with the original 1950s drive-in other than the family running it. Assuming they're not crazy in-debt they should make a nice bundle selling the real estate.

It was very "OK", but never really rated the Charles Atlas Seal Of Approval (tm).
Still, I hate to see a well-liked independent close.
It continues to amaze me how people (yes, here, among all other places) still go all gaga when yet another oh-so-formulaic chain invades the area!

I totally agree. If anyone would ask me (no one did, of course) to name the most mediocre restaurant in Omaha, I would without hesitation say “Petrow’s. Nothing was ever bad enough to send back, but nothing I ever ate was worth ordering again. Still, I know several people who liked eating there enough to make return visits. To each their own.ChadJK wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2019 8:45 pm Mostly, I found Petrow's to be "meh." Nothing to get excited over. This makes 2 longtime dining spots on that section of Center Street to close in quick succession, the other being Amato’s. And Boyd & Charlie’s also closed, just up 60th Street. Perhaps the addition of so many new restaurants in Aksarben Village played a role. Perhaps it was just their time.

I think part of the issue is these old restaurants only catered to people who have lived in the area for a long time. That area of town's demographics are changing and none of those restaurants are really ones many would drive across town to.

Hopefully the new owners will make great use of the geothermal system they installed a few years ago.
Hopefully the new owners will make great use of the geothermal system they installed a few years ago.
That future, Petrow says, is with the underground geothermal energy system being installed at Petrow's Restaurant at 60th and Center Streets. It is an array of 15 tubular wells dug 300 feet underground and a large water holding tank known in the trade as a battery, along with a variety of gadgets and gizmos that connect the whole shebang to the restaurant itself.
costs over the next 20 years," Petrow said. "We are projecting a 75 percent reduction on energy needed for water heating."

How is that location across the street going to be any better than their current location? I understand wanting to move it to the Aloft land, but this seems like access would be as hard as the current location.

Yeah this is confusing as heck. Unless they have a completely separate motive/project for the land.skinzfan23 wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2020 5:34 pm How is that location across the street going to be any better than their current location? I heard Bucky's just bought it to keep a similar competitor from coming in. No plans to build/move station to that location, just for control over what happens with the property.Louie wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2020 6:29 pmYeah this is confusing as heck. Petrows currently has access on Center, 59th and 60th Streets, Buckeys only has access on Center and 60th.skinzfan23 wrote: Wed Jan 08, 2020 5:34 pm How is that location across the street going to be any better than their current location? The idea they would buy it to keep it from another gas station makes sense to me. I'm assuming they would then lease the land to another restaurant, or build a new station there, and put somethng new at the old site.

Oh! That’s a name I haven’t heard in awhile. They built so fast when they entered our city but haven’t done anything since, and have cut store hours at all their stores.

That could potentially make sense. I remembered hearing back when Buckys was moving to 63rd that CVS wanted to buy the old location.

There probably wasn't much of a need for additional CVS stores once they took over Target's pharmacies.Jins123 wrote: Thu Jan 09, 2020 3:20 pm Oh! That’s a name I haven’t heard in awhile. Re: Petrow’s (60th and Center)
Maybe this is a dumb question but if CVS is going there (which would be a tiny spot for them and there is one 84th and Center already, but whatever), why would Bucky's need to buy it?
It makes sense that Bucky's would buy just to have control, but the CVS part seems weird. They would have two on Center about 2 miles apart, and two in between two Walgreens. I know it was just a rumor, but it doesn't make sense to me. Especially since Bucky's has already acquired the land from Petrow.

Jonesy's is about 8 blocks north on 60th St.
I am very glad that Primo's has purchased it. They have a great menu. My wife is a teacher in CB and the teachers frequently visit Primos and love it.

Agreed, not much for Mexican around. We have been down to the place by the Ralston Arena a few times, but this would be a lot closer. We have been to the Primp's in CB several times too.ita wrote: Wed Aug 19, 2020 3:40 pm Not a bad place for a Mexican restaurant. I don't think there are any nearby (I am not counting Voodoo).

I only went to Jonesy's once. But I was so unimpressed I never wanted to go back. I'm willing to admit, maybe I just got the wrong thing, the parking lot always seems busy there. But I'm not really inclinded to try it again.
I agree regarding Primo's. I've not tried it, but I'm hoping to have a good Mexican food at that location.

I think Jonesy's has probably the 2nd best puffy taco in town behind Maria's in Ralston. On Tuesdays they are only $2 each, taste great and are very filling.

I wish them well. Good Mexican restaurants in Omaha are few and far between once you head north of “L” Street.
