Wowza, gotta say... after that St. Johns drubbing I didn't know what was going to happen here... but holy moly that was something else. I'm just in shock. From Valley team to Big East champs.
That said, Z's injury is a huggggeeeeeeeeeeeee worry. I hope it's nothing major.

So does that mean they are THE Big East Champions? What is the point of the conference tournament if they are? I haven't really followed college basketball.

No, they are the Regular Season Co-Champions. The Big East Tournament starts Wednesday and CU is the #1 seed. There will be a "Tournament Champion" tooBusguy2010 wrote: Sat Mar 07, 2020 9:26 pm So does that mean they are THE Big East Champions? What is the point of the conference tournament if they are? Being the regular season champion and #1 Big East Tournament seed means something. This is not just a Big East thing..Brad wrote: Sat Mar 07, 2020 10:08 pmNo, they are the Regular Season Co-Champions. The Big East Tournament starts Wednesday and CU is the #1 seed. Regardless what happens in the Big East Tournament, winning the Big East will likely mean the Jays have locked in a #3 seed in the NCAA tournament. If Creighton wins the Big East Tournament however, they’ll lock in no lower than a #2, or possibly a #1 seed..
The Jays need to make noise in MSG next week too...

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
So the regular season determines seedings for the tournament, and the tournament determines the real champion? That sounds straightforward, but the way they are regular season co champs is confusing. I dont see how Creighton isn't outright regular season champions given that they hold a tie breaker by beating Seton Hall both times.Brad wrote: Sat Mar 07, 2020 10:08 pmNo, they are the Regular Season Co-Champions. Looking in from the outside, I'd give the regular season champs more credit because the tournament is over in a few days. How could a whole season count less than if somehow a, 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7, 8, 9, 10 seed got hot and won the conference tournament and all the sudden they win the championship?
Because I've confused myself even more, how do they ACTUALLY determine conference champions? Tournament or regular season? Or somehow both?

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
Don’t over think it..
In college basketball, you have the regular season champion and the tournament champion..
The champ for the regular season IS real. The Jays get to hang a banner for their accomplishment yesterday..and this does wonders for their program. If CU can pull off winning the conference tournament, it’s like icing on the cake AND will likely improve their NCAA tournament seeding from a #3, to likely a #2 or possibly a #1...

It may not carry an automatic bid but being the regular season champ is WAY more impressive than being the conference tourney champ.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Sun Mar 08, 2020 9:59 am Don’t over think it..

Being the regular season champion means you earned it throughout the course of a grueling 2 months plus conference schedule..WAY more impressive..
As opposed to winning the conference tournament over a long weekend..Of course winning the tournament is icing on the cake

Alexander, Zegarowski named to All-BIG EAST teams
Alexander was named to the All-BIG EAST first team after he led the Jays with 16.9 points per game, a mark good enough for third in the conference.
Zegarowski was named to the second team. He scored 16.1 points per game and led Creighton by averaging five assists per contest.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
If the Jays win the conference tournament, they’ll flirt with a possible 1 seed. I think getting to at least the conference semis means a 2 or 3. Advancing to the championship game probably a 2. 1st round early exit, likely a 3..
I can’t see them dropping to a 4 now.. But stranger things have happened...

In any case, I agree with you. It seems weird to “complain” or be disappointed with a 4 seed, lol..
I’d like to think the Jays did enough in the regular season to earn a 3, regardless if they’re one and BBQ in the tournament..
But best case scenario, CU wins the conference tournament and a few upsets occur, they could “sneak” in as a 1 seed.. Wishful thinking for sure, lol...

I think a lot depends on what happens with Zegarowski on Monday and the news. If he's fine, then I think they can handle St. Johns (providing they don't make shots blindfolded again) or Georgetown. I think Providence, if the Jays face them in the next round will be incredibly tough, they're playing pretty well recently and seem to have a team that can give the Jays fits. If they can win 2, I think they're a lock for a 3, with a possible 2.
If they win it all, I may need to take a few days off of work to nurse the hangover from the partying I will be doing.

I agree with your take. I think we’re in line for a probable 3 and maybe a 2. The 1 is more a dream I have

And I'm also contemplating taking off at least Thursday because that'll be a mid-day game. If they win that one, the Friday game will be in the evening. The following week (I think?), the NCAA tourney I'll be taking off either Thursday or Friday again depending on when the Jays play.
I mean *cough cough* I'll be sick those days.

Finding out about Marcus Zegarowski is key. If he can't play for the Big East Tournament...fine. If he's out for the rest of the season, Creighton's season is likely over.

Did not practice (was there, sat out), but was NOT on crutches as he moved to the post practice huddle.
Still no word on MRI results, although I don't think it takes this long normally for results...I think they know, but aren't sharing.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
Zegarowski is diagnosed with a “meniscus injury.” Likely out for Big East Tournament Thursday game (I believe likely the whole tourney). This is eerily similar to Creighton 2016-2017 season. They peeked at #7 in the rankings and Maurice Watson tore his ACL. They kind of held it together and but eventually lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
This is quite a bit different though..
Maurice Watson tore his ACL in Mid January (January 16th) that season..pretty much at the beginning of conference play and with nearly 2 months left in the regular season. The ACL injury ended his Bluejay career.
Marcus has a meniscus injury.. This happened at the end of the season. The timing stinks, but a meniscus injury is completely different than an ACL. I think the Jays will hold Z out of the Big East tourney.. So he can be ready for the a Big Dance a week later...

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
Absolutely sucks, but after reading through a ton of comments on the Bluejay forum, it is possible for a player to play with a meniscus injury. Knowing that Z is a competitor, I don't doubt him coming back for the NCAA tournament if there is no risk of more injury. The Jays can go out and roll the dice in the Big East tournament since it isn't going to cost them much if they lose....maybe a seed but that is all.
Hopefully this team continues to fight through adversity as they have all season.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
It might be telling in that they haven't said this was a season ending injury as they have in the past with Mo, Epperson, etc. Hopefully that means there's still hope for a return for the NCAAs.
Frankly, I would like to see him sit out the conference tourney, rest up for when it really matters.
Just have to cross your fingers I suppose, but losing a star player this close to tourney time is the most Creighton-like-luck thing to happen, and it's so frustrating to see this happen each year.

Yes, I agree very frustrating. At least this time they made it through the regular season, but just barely.
I also agree, that it would be wise to hold him out of the Big East tournament so that he hopefully will be available for the NCAA's.

Re: Creighton Basketball 2019-2020
Looks like Zegarowski is going to get his knee scoped. Means definitely out for BEast tourney. They hope to have him back for NCAAs, but it would surprise me truly.
Welp. That's a heart breaker. I swear the Jays are cursed.

I tend to agree. My heart holds out hope Zeg can return for the Big Dance..but my mind says he’s done for the season..MadMartin8 wrote: Tue Mar 10, 2020 10:30 pm Looks like Zegarowski is going to get his knee scoped. It’s a major blow for sure. It’s a lot to ask, but native Omahan Shereef Mitchell needs to step up..There is enough leadership and unselfishness on this team to rally behind this setback and not wilt like a flower akin to what we’ve seen in previous seasons...
