Ita, you won’t see a wrecking ball. Mostly using a crane to pick it apart. But there is still time to get them down there. Walk around Flatiron. Walk them past the old Library building on Harney and talk about the Classical authors depicted on the exterior. (A building that needs to have something more than OHA.)ita wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2020 7:15 pmThat's OK. My kids love looking at construction sites (which we have several near us in West O), but want to see a building torn down. I already missed the parking garage at Conagra and the Shark Club. Maybe we could catch this one.skinzfan23 wrote: Mon Oct 05, 2020 6:49 pm Yes, I noticed on the WOWT webcam. Doesn't appear to be a wrecking ball or anything big though.

Outgoing Douglas County Board members seek $10 million more for justice center
With the Douglas County Board facing turnover, two outgoing members propose to commit another $10 million to the county’s $120 million justice center project.
Board members Clare Duda and Marc Kraft will offer a resolution at Tuesday’s meeting to direct the additional money from the county’s financial reserves. They cite legal delays that subjected the project to higher inflationary costs and design changes spurred by the pandemic.
Duda and Kraft are leaving office after Tuesday’s meeting.
...
Duda said part of the $10 million would fund changes related to health-related issues raised by the coronavirus, such as larger conference rooms, cubicle walls instead of open space, touchless water fountains and antimicrobial surfaces.
...
Initial work on the project, which was expected to begin last year, got underway in August; the project is now scheduled to be finished by August 2023.

I find it absolutely corrupt and sickening that they would take that 10 million from the virus fund and spend it on a jail. This is the definition of a stimulus bill being exploited and bastardized. I am all for more stimulus but when the money is funneled into projects that have nothing to do with the virus like this it makes me against stimulus. If we can't trust the government officials to handle the money right then its best not to give them any at all.ita wrote: Fri Dec 11, 2020 3:13 pm Outgoing Douglas County Board members seek $10 million more for justice center

The CARES act had a largeish pile of money for local government relief since tourism went to essentially zero and retail receipts were down all over the country, among other problems. The money wasn't to be spent on things related to the virus itself necessarily, just to keep localities operating as normally as possible. Most cities have been impacted fiscally by the virus to a much greater degree than Omaha or Douglas County.

Excellent news, 2 1/2 years ago it was announced. Believe it’s only supposed to be 7 floors now. Hopefully they won’t lower it anymore. Getting rid of a surface parking lot gotta like that.

Re: Proposed Justice Center at 18th and Harney- 10 stories
I had mentioned this in another thread, the tower crane is currently in the air for this development. I saw a pic of it yesterday on the Omaha Reddit page..
From simply a building/development perspective, this scaled back 8 story low rise (was originally planned as 10) will do nothing for the skyline.. But once the entire development is completed, will add a decent bit of density in the DT core. Which is always a plus...

Yeah all we're getting is a little density on the south end of the core. It'll look nice. But nothing groundbreaking.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Tue Jan 19, 2021 8:25 pm I had mentioned this in another thread, the tower crane is currently in the air for this development. Re: Proposed Justice Center at 18th and Harney- 10 stories
I’m thinking it should be about as tall as the OPPD building directly to the east. It will help with density and might be visible in the skyline from the near southside of the downtown area. It would need to be at least 10 or 11 floors to have a more substantial impact on the skyline. Wish they could of kept it at 10. But it’s construction in Omaha’s core so I’m not complaining.

It’s quite sad Douglas county doesn’t have the balls to build the 11 story building

Re: Proposed Justice Center at 18th and Harney- 10 stories
I guess you’d have to consider floor-to-floor height and number of floors vs. the actual overall building height comparison between the previous design and the current one. Without looking myself, it could be that the older design had more floors with less height between floors. In other words, it’s possible an 8-story building with greater height between floors could have similar or greater height than a 11 story building. I couldn’t get the HDR elevation views to load, so there’s no way to compare the overall heights.

Re: Proposed Justice Center at 18th and Harney- 10 stories
Going back to my first post when I started this thread in June/2018.. I referenced the proposed rendering at the time was “not a mind blowing highrise”..
Now fast forward to 3 years later and construction for the building is underway.. It remains nothing mind blowing. But, simply, a density adding 8 story low rise. The height will likely remain the same as the original proposal (hard to tell the difference)..Again, this was never going to be a skyline enhancing development from the jump..
Nice to see a tower crane downtown again though...

I agree it will be nice to increase the density in the area, whether it’s 8-story, 9,10, or 11. I don’t think it was a lack of “balls” that set the height, but it was more likely the actual program needs of the Justice Center that determined the size and number of floors needed and possibly the efficiency and cost.

3 buildings.
Judicial Tower
Eight Stories
1723 Building
Four Stories
Youth Center
Four Stories
A single 16 story building would have been a game changer. But still, the infill is nice.

I’m excited about this project and hope it has a nice impact on the surrounding area and helps dense up this part of downtown a little more. I remember when it was announced during the summer of 2018, seems like a long time ago.

It looks like 15 ft floors. So 120ft building without whatever cap-work gets done?

Which, for being only an 8 story low-rise, will probably reach 120 feet in height..It will be an excellent density filler, but may also actually have an impact on the skyline looking east from 480, 20th, 16th streets into the downtown area..nothing dramatic mind you, but noticeable..Sort of like the Hyatt Place hotel in the Old Market...
