Re: 2021 Weather thread-
Another thing I noticed is the NWS lowered what is considered "normal" precipitation for May to 4.66" from 4.76". Gonna take me a while to accept that our recent dryness is actually lowering the bar. So with it being pretty exactly halfway through the month, we should be at 2.38" and we are at 1.61" so we are a little behind. This upcoming week looks like it may get us back on track. I'm realistically hoping for maybe an inch, but I'm still longing for one of the washout type weeks where we get 2" and more.

Although it came down wonderfully around 1pm, it was pretty short lived. 0.28" so far with not much more forecast for the next 24 hours. Someone wash their car!

Re: 2021 Weather thread-
Looks to be a decent amount of rain on tap tomorrow. About .3". And when I say decent I mean that in the least. .3" is .3", but we really need a lot more than that. We're quickly running out of time to get about 2.5" of rain by the end of the month.

All I know is, starting Friday thru Sunday (according to KETV) highs in the lower to mid 80’s- minimal wind and DRY.. We’re due for a multiple day stretch of dry, warm, later Spring weather..
Can’t wait

I guess I'll never be in that boat guys. My lawn is small and yes, what grass I have is loving this rain. I don't care about my grass, but my garden and the overall ecology needs the rain, and I don't like above average temperatures, so I won't be hoping for warm and dry ever. Cheers to you all and enjoy it.

Re: 2021 Weather thread-
The thing is, it can’t always be wet, rainy and below average either.. Equally bad for the eco-system. So, as much as I like warmer, dry and sunny.. I am a home owner with a fairly significant lawn.. I realize we need a balance of both..Busguy2010 wrote: Thu May 20, 2021 1:03 am I guess I'll never be in that boat guys. I won't be hoping for warm and dry ever. Cheers to you all and enjoy it.
So this Thursday thru Sunday, if the forecast holds up, it will provide that warmer, sunny and dry balance..
Anywho-
One last thing- It’s about to be May 20th and not a hint of severe weather.. This is not the Omaha I grew up with in the 1970’s, 80’s or even 90’s.. Very unusual...

Re: 2021 Weather thread-
I guess I'll give you this, it has been annoyingly raining a little bit all the time for the last week or so. I would also prefer it to be dry a few days a week, but above average temps can kick it. In my perfect world, it would rain 1-2" over the course of one event each week and be dry the rest, with maybe 80 tops for this time of year. As it stands, we are still quite behind on rain for the month. And yes, frustratingly very little excitement on the thunderstorm front.

Re: 2021 Weather thread-
It has to rain 2.5" over the next 11 days to even reach the standard of the new normal the NWS put out. And I don't really like our odds to reach that... Though according to the NWS, the forecast is trending back to having a little bit of rain pretty much every day still in the forecast for this weekend, and not quite as warm. More like 83 tops with rain chances, when a few days ago they were saying 87 and no rain chances.

Re: 2021 Weather thread-
It would seem to be a complete shift of severe weather either directly to the south or straight east of the Omaha metro..
It’s like there is a cap (OmaDome) over the metropolitan area that keeps the unstable convergences/Gulf moisture needed to fuel a severe weather event.. This was not the case in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s or even through 2010..since around that time- mild, calm springs/early summers for the most part..
Very unusual for this part of the country imo..at least very unusual for what I remember growing up with here in the Omaha metro...

I agree, and it is frustrating to me. When I really started paying attention to the weather in around 2006 or 2007, I could count on at least a few to several fairly significant severe weather events.Omaha Cowboy wrote: Thu May 20, 2021 2:46 am It would seem to be a complete shift of severe weather either directly to the south or straight east of the Omaha metro..

I think we haven't had a single remarkable event since 2017, which is 4 years now. Actually 2017 was the last time Omaha was threatened enough to turn on the sirens for an event. I was out of town for the June 16, 2017 Bellevue tornadoes, so I don't know if the sirens sounded for that ( I'd bet they did). The last time I heard the sirens sound for a weather event was couple weeks earlier in 2017. Might have been like right around now in May 2017. Before 2017, I think we had an "alertable" event at least once a year, if not more. I'm waiting.

I've been in Colorado the last few days. On Sunday on my way out, I encountered a monster supercell that had produced a tornado near Sterling CO. The most amazing storm experience I ever had. Now on the way back, looks like there is strong language coming from the NWS for West and Central Nebraska. Our first Moderate risk day of the year anywhere near Omaha.

The Oma-Dome effect looks to be pretty real. It’s likely the severe storms won’t pop up any closer than 50 miles from the greater Omaha Metropolitan area tonight..

I slept through all of it, so not sure how it went, but Eppley recorded .98" of rain, so that's good. Puts us at 3.42" on the month, but with a few small chances left, it's almost a guarantee we will finish short.

As expected- Oma-Dome proved once again to be an effective deterrent to severe weather in the Omaha metropolitan area

So, it is official now. We finish May 2021 with a 1.26" moisture deficit. And that is despite the NWS reducing the "normal" moisture to 4.66" from 4.76". We are not in good shape, moisture-wise. On the 2020 decade, we are currently 11.65" in the hole. I will continue keeping track.

Where’s the thunderstorms at??
Is it just me, or does it seem like our severe weather frequency has been diminishing over the years? I remember back in the day, every spring and summer we would get awesome thunderstorms and weather events...Now it’s just rain, and maybe some thunder if we are lucky.
Maybe it flip flopped to winter? We have had some pretty good winters in terms of snowfall the past few years.

I'm sure this has been discussed in the forum, but many studies have shown that Tornado Alley has been shifting to the South and East over the past several decades.

And large historic tornado outbreaks in that area aren't unknown--1840, 1883, 1884, 1936, 1974 to name a few.

Yeah, so far the severe weather season has been super lame. Not encouraging seeing that our last really exciting storm to hit Omaha was over 4 years ago, not one tornado warning since, and maybe 5 severe thunderstorm warnings over that span. Normally June is our most active month, so there's still time, but not a lot. It figures I'm out of town the 17th - 20th, so there will probably be a big storm during that weekend.

Re: 2021 Weather thread-
Our lack of severe weather is probably a big contributing factor as to why we were behind in moisture so much last year, and haven't made up much ground so far this spring. I'd never hope for destruction or anything like that, but a good strong storm is what we need every few weeks to get to our necessary moisture level without it raining constantly. These little half inch rain events every few weeks aren't gonna cut it. We could really benefit from an actual good rain event like 2" + over the course of a couple hours. I can't remember the last time we had a good one like that. And by that, I mean like a good big storm comes in, gives us its big amount of moisture, and is out of the picture as quickly as it showed up. That's what we've been missing, especially last year. We only really had one big rain even this year, and the rest have been dink and dunk. Kinda frustrating, like watching the Huskers throw swing passes and 5 yard outs and never getting a big chunk play.

That said, I tease the “Oma-Dome effect”..But the reality is, it’s highly unusual for this part of the country to miss out on spring severe weather events time and time again. We’re due. It’s just a matter of when...

Actually the 1/2 in rains are probably more beneficial than anything. If you get a quick 2 in in a hour or so, yes it reduces the in deficit, but most of that would be runoff and isn't actually absorbed into the ground.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Jun 04, 2021 1:29 am Our lack of severe weather is probably a big contributing factor as to why we were behind in moisture so much last year, and haven't made up much ground so far this spring. I get that but it would have to rain a half inch like every 9 days to meet our needs and that just hasn't happened. We have so much ground to make up that we basically can't afford any sort of prolonged hot/ dry period. Hoping we get a good rain some time soon just to gain a little momentum and not be constantly coming from behind. Not very hopeful on that front for this forecast period though.

Yeah the 10 day forecast is reminiscent of typical late July.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Jun 04, 2021 4:58 pm I get that but it would have to rain a half inch like every 9 days to meet our needs and that just hasn't happened. It’s definitely wash/wax my car weather. Which I’ll happily do mid morning tomorrow..
I welcome the warmer, summer like temperatures.. It’s been awhile...
