So after the complete game at Penn St with the win on the road what is anyone of the handful of people here that follow Husker basketball expecting tonight?

A road game at Ohio St with a 6 PM start.

Ohio St coming off a loss to Maryland on Sunday ( 60-75)

I still think we lose but I imagine it will be with us losing in the 10-12 range.

I have to say I have no more expectations for this team this season and it has been that way for a few weeks. That has to carry over to tonight too so my expectation is not existing. I will watch though.

Three men in the Nebraska athletic department improved their stock greatly Tuesday night.

On the floor, Bryce McGowens improved his Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year candidacy with 26 points to lead Nebraska (9-21, 3-16 Big Ten) past No. 23 Ohio State (18-9, 11-7 Big Ten) 78-70 in Columbus.

Somehow this got lost in the news because of the men's team wins. Alexis Markowski won the Big Ten Freshmen of the year. Nebraska could sweep this if McGowens win's on the men's side as well.

That has been the message from Nebraska (10-21, 4-16 Big Ten) coach Fred Hoiberg to his team over the last week. That mentality carried into an up and down affair in Madison Sunday against Big Ten champions No. 10 Wisconsin (24-5, 15-5).

On the halftime coverage on TV they said that it had been 50 years since a team with 20 losses in a season had back-to-back wins over a ranked team. Until now. Not the best sting to break because of the losses but never the less good to see the wins.

Nebraska to Face Northwestern in B1G Tourney Opener

The Nebraska men's basketball team opens up Big Ten Tournament play Wednesday afternoon, as the Huskers take on Northwestern.

Tipoff from Gainbridge Fieldhouse is set for 5 p.m. (central) and the game will be carried on BTN and the Huskers Radio Network. It is one of two first-round games that day, as Minnesota will take on Penn State 25 minutes following the conclusion of the Huskers' matchup.

I think you got to see glimpses late season of what Hoiberg's teams could be at their best (which sorta mirrors ISU)- streaky teams capable of playing with and even sometimes beating ranked teams, but never quite getting over the hump to elite for more than 3-4 games at a time. But even at the end of the season, I think they're still pretty far, even if headed in the right direction. Compared to another team that might look similar (My beloved K-State Wildcats), Huskers end their season 10-22, while Wildcats finished 14-17 (might get NIT or some other tournament bid, but maybe not).

However, 'Cats were 12-9 against unranked teams, with the average margin of defeat at 4 pts, (worst unranked loss was by 11 to Ole Miss), and 2-8 against ranked with the average margin of defeat at 11 pts. Best win was 11pts over #19 TTU, worst was either losing by 25 to Baylor, or by 19 to KU after playing them to within 2 the first time. Highest ranked team (68) on Ken Pom for both number of wins and number of losses, and highest ranked sub .500 team, playing 5th hardest schedule in the nation. 342 (out of 358) teams in the 'luck' category, essentially this same team could have been 20-11 by changing point differential in 7 games decided by 5 or less games by 20 pts. (went 1-7)

Huskers were 8-13 against unranked with average margin of defeat of 13 pts (worst unranked was.... W. Ill? Rutgers by 30?) , 2-7 against ranked with an average margin of defeat at 11 pts. Best win was the 1 pointer over #10 Wisconsin, worst was either of the nearly 30pt losses to Auburn or Purdue. Nebraska is 134 on KemPom, highest ranked for number of wins and losses, with a luck ranking at at 302, playing the 26th hardest schedule in the nation. NE has only 4 games decided by 5 points or less, goes 1-3. Same team couldn't have been much more than 13-19

So, teams relatively similar in a number of key areas, the big difference being - NU played down to competition in a number of areas, and had far fewer competitive games. Luck is most variable there (last year KSU was 9-20 with a 117 luck ranking, Nebraska was 7-20 with a 351 luck ranking, 2020 Nebraska was 299 in luck, 2020 KSU was 348) and a number of overall metrics are trending the right way for Hoiberg, small sample size not withstanding. Hoiberg has historically not had permanently terrible luck (ISU teams bounced all over the place, like one would expect), and I think he might be able to turn it around if he can keep developing his guys.

But I think he has a short leash, and I hope for you fan's sake that Alberts is already looking ahead to prospective next hires, and I think he can swing for the fences with a relatively unknown, up and coming assistant or DII coach (Throw $5m/year and see if you can pry Ben McCollum from Northwest Missouri, for example, actually, maybe not because I'd rather KSU fire Weber and hire McCollum [edit, right after I posted this, I saw Weber resigned, I'm really starting my campaign now]), rather than popping a mid-major coach up (Miles) or doing a DI retread (Hoiberg).
