Yeah, they are the same ones that when downtown projects are announce like the Steelhouse or Kiewit Luminarium will immediately ask, "where are we going to park?"
I do think the diner was quite popular and had been there for quite some time.

Greg
I’d heard this the first time I moved here years ago, but I never could figure out why. I tried, I ate there two or three times. Personally I didn’t think the food or the experience was anything special and I just stopped going. I did like the look of the diner from the outside though. Still, getting rid of it to develop something potentially more useful is far better.
I agree. The Diner did have a loyal group of regulars that’s for sure. The few times I ate there, the food was about average..

I’m glad to see the Moxy finally getting off the ground. I think it’ll do great right in the heart of the Old Market…

Sure, but half these people bemoan its loss but somehow didn't notice how long it's been closed.

I never went in, every city seems to have something like this and it's always the same: Mediocre food meant to remind someone of the 50's. But it was always slow looking from the outside too.

I'm glad to see it being replaced with something that brings utility to the spot, and fills in an underused parcel.

I never went in it either, it looked cool. I think the Moxy Hotel will be an improvement, plus it adds density.

I ate lunch there a few times when I worked in the Old Market. It definitely had a nice 50s ambiance and cool exterior with a friendly staff. But people could always tell I had been there from the greasy frying pan smell absorbed by my clothing and hair. I’ll never forget that smell.

Seeing a building on the lot makes the lot look a lot larger...

I agree. in my minds eye with the diner, it seemed small, but with the building in place, the footprint is sizable. I hope other surface lots in the old market see similar sized development. I would love to see new construction residential in the old market.

Such a great score for the Old Market. Moxy hotels are really cool and hopefully having one here will finally be a catalyst for some more permanent development in the building directly across the street to the west. It has always been such a great space.

Yes, thanks for pointing this out. The lot does look a lot bigger. And it woudl indeed be great to see the building to the west as a restaurant with sidewalk seating again.
My old signature got too old. So old it was getting almost as old me as me. Yeah, it was up there in years.

Back in the mid-2000s I walked by it to and from work each day and there was sidewalk tables andseating next to it on the west side of 12th. So I had the impression it had been a restaurant at one time. Your question just now makes me realize that was just an assumption on my part. It sure looked the part though.

FWIW I've lived downtown since July 2015 and that to my memory that building has never had a tenant.

I worked nearby in the late 90s and early 2000s, and I remember there was a short-lived restaurant called The Bistro in the early 2000s. It had a split entry and was half a story above street level. They also had seating outside at street level. There were also a few offices on the upper floors.

Indeed it was. And it was one of the most visually appealing, urbane restaurants I had ever visited outside of NYC or Europe. Sorry I cannot recall the name. Not sure why it failed, as it was always very busy the times I was there. At least 10 years ago.

The restaurant was called The Bistro as I mentioned about 5 posts above.

Glad to hear. I hadn't been by in a few weeks, but it looked like nothing had changed since Brad's last photo update.

I think they are flying now that they switched to wood. I saw it a couple days ago and they were framing the second floor. Now that they are on 3rd already, it won't be long to frame up the last 3 floors.

I'm surprised that they didn't use component walls on this project. I know the jobsite is small but craning up prebuilt walls would be faster than stick framing

I'm always surprised when they wood-frame a multi-story hotel. You'd think for fire safety it would require steel and concrete construction. People that know much more about such things than I do write those building codes, so I suppose I should just trust in that.

Take this for what it’s worth but rumor has it (based on statements from the construction workers) that Marriott pulled out of this and the building is going to be apartments. Grain of salt for sure.

I was looking at it today and I wonder if they are waiting on another delivery of wall panels? Seems like every wood frame job in town has stacks of wall panels that show up by the truckload and I believe this one did at one time but now it looks like most of them have been used I wonder if they’re waiting on more to show up?
