That would be the more expected time frame. Memorial day to Labor day. However, like I said, I don't think they would do well during that time due to the abundance of backyard BBQs and grilling out. People already have their fix during that time frame. And these methods generally should be much better than a McRib, so I don't think it would compete well. That's why I think they're smart to do it when they do cause there's less abundance of good BBQ to compete with. And I also think psychologically people long for the days of summer that are associated with BBQ, so it is very smart to roll it out after November when the days are much shorter and it gets dark earlier. I think that is much more a reason for its success than it actually being that good, along with the nostalgia and mystique of it only coming around once a year.

Completely agree with Little King. It’s sometimes lost in the crowd of national sub sandwich shops we have here. Their sandwiches are all solidly good.

As it relates to McDonald’s and their McRib, just my personal opinion- the McRib is garbage, and I’m always surprised there’s still a loyal crowd who craves a sandwich that’s such a hot mess. I’ve ingested exactly 1 McRib sandwich in my life. The verdict? NEVER AGAIN.

Eh, I don't mecessarily disagree. But like with every fast food item, they can be hit or miss. Ive definitely had my fair share of both really bad, and pretty good McRibs. I'm thinking that one you had must have been one of the really bad ones. Just depends who made it and when. My first one must have been a pretty good one. I'll say I get 6 of them over the period when they come out and I'd say pretty solidly I get two pretty dang good ones, 2 meh ones and 2 W T F ones.

Since I've never had the McRib before, I wouldn't know. So I can't really comment. Like I said a while back, usually whenever I go to McDonald's, I usually just get Chicken McNuggets.

You know, it's funny, when I was a little kid, I actually used to think nuggets were called McNuggets. Later on, I realized McDonald's just added the "Mc" prefix for advertisement.

I think locally, Little King has definitely been forgotten in the crowded blizzard of sub sandwich places. Some of that is it’s diminishing presence over the past 20 years: but it’s good to see them rejuvenate and open more places in the Omaha metro.

Speaking of local fast food, I had lunch from Broncos yesterday (the 120th and Pacific location). The wait at the drive thru was nearly 30 minutes (the place was really busy at 2pm Saturday afternoon). After the girl in the drive thru mistakenly charged me for and gave me another persons order.. I finally got everything corrected, received my actual food order and drove home to eat. I had a pork tenderloin sandwich and a double cheeseburger. There used to be a time, not too long ago, that the pork tenderloin sandwich at Broncos was HUGE. The one I received yesterday was half its former size. The double cheeseburger was “Meh”. Everything tasted okay, but I was left feeling disappointed. I don’t eat at Broncos as often these days as I did when I was in high school or college, but what I experienced yesterday was nowhere near the quality of the past. Hopefully it was a one off experience. Broncos does have really good fried chicken. I might try that again when I make a return visit in a few weeks…

Has anyone else eaten at Broncos lately? If so, what was your experience…

That Pork Tenderloin at Broncos back in the day used to be twice the size of the one I got yesterday..and the double cheeseburger was squished together a la’ the burger in the movie ”Falling Down” where Michael Douglas’ character freaks out over the miserable squashed double he got at “Whammy Burger”.. Here’s the scene, lol-

Its been a while for me, but I've never had a pork tenderloin sandwich that didn't extend well beyond the confines of the - albeit small - bun.

Cowboy, I think you may have just been one of the unlucky few. I don't get Bronco's that often, but now that you've mentioned it, I am really craving it. A pork tenderloin sandwich, fries, a hickory burger, and a strawberry shake. There's a strong chance I will pig out tomorrow.

On the subject of the pork tenderloin sandwich at Bronco's, what kind of toppings do you add, if at all? I know they only come with pickles, but many times I've taken it home and added mustard and onions. That pork tenderloin sandwich was a bit of a staple as a kid, and because I was a kid, I only ate it plain, no pickles.

For me I always put mustard on my tenderloin. I think it started from grade school at school lunch. That's how they served them to us.

For me I always put mustard on my tenderloin. I think it started from grade school at school lunch. That's how they served them to us.

I guess sometimes I put Ketchup or BBQ sauce on them. Its all good. A versatile base. One thing I've never had on it is lettuce.

I wish Bronco's had a more North location. Maybe around 72nd & Ames, Maple, or Blondo would be a dream for me. At least back in the day they used to have the 72nd & Pacific location. Every time I want Bronco's it never happens because I'm an "If I'm in the area" kind of person. And whenever I am in the area, I'm not thinking about it. Bronco's has been strictly South of Dodge ever since the 30th & Fort location closed. And even though I guess they are opening a new location somewhere in NW Omaha or Elkhorn, that is still way out there. Anybody know how that's going BTW?

As far as I know, expansion plans for a new 3rd location for Broncos is on hold for the foreseeable future…

Today I settled on getting a Big Mac... And WOW. The Big Mac, fries, and a Dr Pepper cost me $10.08. I never... The last time I had that meal was almost a year ago, and even then I was astonished that it was 8 something. Plus the service was terrible, and they're really going all in on the automated ordering. It didn't work and I had to talk to an actual person anyway. I recited my order four times, and then the man at the second window rudely asked "what did you get?" By the time I got home I said "dam this better be the best Big Mac of my life" and it was not. Note to self, stay away from the 72nd & Blondo location at the very least. I doubt I'll be back at MacDonalds any time soon. The whole thing just left a bad taste in my mouth. I barely even enjoyed the food. It was just calories, as the service there seemed to want me to know. Not to be enjoyed, just consumed. Bleck.

Last year, I asked if anyone remembered when most McDonald's had 3 flags flying outside their stores – US flag, state flag and McDonald's. Now hardly any of them do. Someone said it made McDonald's stand out.

Well, I made a picture of a McDonald's with flags. I captured an image of the one on 48th and Van Dorn in Lincoln, got the flags from the McDonald's on 77th and Dodge on Omaha and plastered them onto the picture. I did this for nostalgia's sake.

At that price point, I’d trash going to McDonald’s, and get much better tasting and quality food at Don & Millie’s, Runza or even Bronco’s- if I was craving a fast food burger.

The French Onion burger currently selling at Runza is really good by the way…

I go to that one, but I use the app.

So do I, and the only way I’d go is with the app. It’s the only way you can make it reasonably priced.

I can also confirm the lack of customer service. If it wasn’t for one good lady at the drive thru, it would be a total disaster.

Oh I will. I remember the good ol days (actually not even that long ago) when you could get Big Macs 2 for $4... I had no clue of the price when I got it, I just got it. Now you can get a burger from an actual burger joint for cheaper.

I do think a Big Mac is a tasty burger though, so I can't just cut and paste. It's hard to replace, but yeah at that price, I'm more than motivated to not go there, and also just make my own version at home. It's times like those that make ya wanna avoid fast food altogether.

Aw, I love that lady. I know we're speaking of the same woman. She used to be at the 72nd & Lake location before they moved. I remember as a kid thinking about how nice she was. It was good to see her the other day, and she has to be the only redeeming quality of that business anymore.

Alright, on the subject of McDonalds, despite my recent bad experience, I have a question or a challenge... Say you were to only eat McDonalds for a couple days or up to a week... Including long since discontinued items, what is your list of items you would get? And how long could you stretch it? Mine is:

A Big Mac, fries, a 20 piece McNugget, Hot Mustard, Sweet Chili, Sweet & Sour sauce, a two hamburger meal, a couple McDoubles, an Angus Third pounder (the one with bacon, ketchup, mustard, and red onion), an old school cinnamon roll and a couple cinnamon melts. I think I could stretch that about 3-4 days. I would be in bliss as long as the service is decent haha.

So what are your all-time favorites and go-to's at McDonalds?

Abelardo's is expanding to York. They will be going in the old Taco John's spot next door to the North Casey's.

I remember a Taco John's commercial from 1994 that featured a man in a monster truck going through the drive-thru of Taco John's saying he never had to wait in line. There was a car in front of him and he just went right on through the drive-thru and smashed that poor guy's car with his truck. The other guy got out of his car before it was crushed by that monster truck.

Where on 90th? Funny you mention Sbarro, I worked at the one in Crossroads food court during its heyday when I was a teenager.

Its at 90th & Blondo. We had a different discussion about it, and apparently the new stations that Kwik Shop puts out either have an attached Taco John's or a Sbarro. And man, I tell you what, it might be a weird void, but its a void I've had ever since Sbarro left in (I think) 2014. I absolutely love Sbarro, it was such a part of my being up until they left. It was by far my favorite fast food restaurant, and I wouldn't doubt if I had it once a week there for a very long time.

The Crossroads one was my place as a kid, and I think I went there every Wednesday. That would have been mid-90's. And then I think I lost it when I went to middle school as I wasn't so much near crossroads every day anymore. Then the Crossroads one closed, and I pretty much forgot about it until me and my friends started going to the Westroads one for the pre-bar meal. And I'm not gonna lie, we went there almost every Saturday and sometimes Sunday too for a good two years up until it closed. I was one of the last customers. I think they closed at 8pm on December 29th 2014 (I could be off a little bit), But I know I made dam sure to go there on the last day and it was pretty late.

Man I loved that place. I hope, if it were to open back up here, that it hasn't declined like many of the fast food places have.

And speaking of Sbarro, I literally loved everything they offered. All the stuffed pizzas, but I think the spinach one was my favorite, all the Stromboli, all the pizza, the bread sticks, and the salad. The sauce was my favorite, I'd ask them to douse my pizza in that sauce, and I'd also put a heavy coating of garlic, basil, oregano, pepper flakes, and pepper. Man, I loaded it UP,

OH MY GOD. My mind is blown!

Dude this is crazy. I'm going through Denver in a couple weeks, and I said "well, what would stop me from going to the Sbarro there?" I got on Google maps, zoomed out to the regional level just to see where the locations are there, and they already have the location at 90th & Blondo in Google maps

YESSS, I hope it is as good as it used to be. And it even says opens September 20th. I am so happy right now.

I'm just a little bit skeptical that its attached to a gas station... And the kids/managers that usually run fast food joints nowadays don't seem to care as much as when I was younger... Fingers crossed it isn't a dud. I'll be going there within a couple weeks of open.

I see. Thanks. I know that Westroads' food court didn't open until 1991. And Oak View was built with a food court from the get-go.

I'd be happy if McD brought back fried pies, and the soft serv they had in the late 80s early 90s. Fries cooked in beef tallow would be nice too.

I'd guess Sbarro. TJ franchise rights are already held by Bremer. Plus 108th by Family Fare is a few minutes away.

It should be a Sbarro. On google maps, a couple weeks ago, it said opening September 20th. Obviously that didn't happen as the building isn't complete. Then after that, it said "permanently closed". Now it doesn't show up on the map. Wouldn't that be a rotten tease for me?

I really hope it is still gonna be a Sbarro. If it is, I plan to try one of every menu item. Its been such a long time since I've had Sbarro. It not looks like they no longer have the stuffed pizza, which was my favorite item.

Sorry to get away from the Sbarro conversation, but I just had Amigos-King's Classic today. Picked up the special, 3 tacos for $3. It's solid for a fast food taco. Spicy salsa is pretty tame, but was pretty good. I came in with low expectations, and they exceeded it with the cheap tacos I tried. It's good enough that I will come again.
