Here's something to go along with taking away the blackshirts..

When you start winning you can play Sirius during the tunnel walk. It's for winners who intimidate opponents.

While I think it's mostly to pump up the crowd, point taken.

On the subject can college football please move on from 'Zombie Nation'!? I can't think of anything more annoying save FSU's tomahawk chant. Seriouly, I have to mute my tv.

4* recruit Malachi Coleman (Lincoln East) has committed to Nebraska. Given how poor the in-state recruiting has been this is a strong testament for Mickey Joseph.

Anywho-

I would really like to see how this season with Mickey Joseph guiding the ship goes. I mostly like what he’s doing thus far..and I hope if he can guide this team into bowl eligibility, he would be given the same fair consideration for the next NU head coaching job as the Lane Kiffin’s of the world…

Ciao..LiO…Peace

I too would like to see Mickey get a fair crack at it but I worry there's not enough talent in the trenches to get more than 5 wins. I believe Mickey will have to win 6 or more games to be seriously considered.
I completely agree with you. NU is currently 3-4. Looking at the Huskers remaining schedule- Illinois (home), Minnesota (home), Michigan (road), Wisconsin (home) and Iowa (road)- I think we can pencil in an NU loss at Michigan.. But the other 4? The Huskers could lose all of them or win all of them. To be bowl eligible, they need to come up with a way to win 3 of them..

Like you, I fear the lack of talent- especially on the defensive side of the ball, won’t be enough to get to 6 wins..

We’ll keep our fingers crossed 🤞

Ciao..LiO…Peace

I'm actually more concerned with the O-line than the defense. Busch has shown improvement over the last three games(albeit not in yards given up) including two second half shutouts. It really hurt to lose Henrich. Getting Reimer back would be huge. Busch certainly has an up-hill battle after 4 years of not practicing tackling.
Let’s just say after the Purdue game, I have little confidence left in the Husker defense. Giving up 600 yards in total offense to the Boilers will do that to you, (at least it did to me, lol), The O-Line is another obvious concern..but if the Huskers can’t stop anybody defensively, that adds to the stress on the O-Line which, imo, run blocks better than they pass protect. If the Huskers are forced to abandon the run and play catch up throwing the ball, Casey Thompson is going to end up with a serious injury before the season ends..

Overall, the Huskers just don’t play complimentary football very well..and they haven’t for so long, it’s hard to remember the last time they did..

If NU somehow beats a good Illinois team next Saturday, I’ll feel much better about the possibility of 6 wins this season for sure…

Ciao..LiO…Peace

The quick scores to Palmer are great but don't help the D. Going back to the offensive deficiencies, the inability to run the ball(O-line again) would help an exhausted defense get off the field.
Those quick score passes to Palmer are predicated on the Husker defensive failures to stop Purdue for pretty much the entire ball game- putting the NU offensive attack behind the 8 ball in “catch up to keep up” mode..Thus, the offense abandons the run game to throw the football in order to keep up. It’s a recipe for disaster for the team overall In the long run..

The Huskers need to figure out how to play complimentary football moving forward if they have any chance to get to 6 win bowl eligibility.. Like you intimated earlier, I also have my doubts and think the likely scenario is a 5 win season..

Let’s hope we’re both wrong :)

Ciao..LiO…Peace

6 wins at this point of the season is very unlikely. Our only 3 wins so far are against weaker teams. I really wish we could of won the Northwestern game that was a huge loss as well as Georgia Southern.

LOL, I know the game isn't for a few weeks, but last night I had a dream the Huskers beat Wisconsin by a score of 67-65. Huskers got the ball back and returned to the 40. Just enough time for a hail Mary. Ball flails to the ground, but Wisconsin was called for PI on the final play, Huskers get one untimed down. Wisconsin players then remove the goal posts and cart them onto the field and wrap them in plastic as barriers. Much to their demise, most of their players are occupied by propping up the goal posts, leaving one husker wide open in the left corner of the end zone for a 45 yard touchdown. Fans screaming so loud, and scene so chaotic that the stadium literally explodes. I proceed to proudly walk home from Lincoln pushing a tire.
End of dream.

Any ideas what this means? Haha

McKewon: Key questions to ponder as Trev Alberts tightens Nebraska's coaching search

Kalen DeBoer, native South Dakotan, has Washington at 6-2. He took the UW job just after Thanksgiving 2021, right around the time Frost was wrapping up a 3-9 season.

Dan Lanning, another coach NU probably could have hired, has Oregon at 6-1 after a comfortable win over previously undefeated UCLA. The 36-year-old North Kansas City (Mo.) native didn’t take the job until Dec. 11 because the Ducks tried in vain to hold onto Mario Cristobal, who left for Miami.

How much money would Nebraska pay — in buyouts in future salaries — to secure the right coach? Some potential candidates have big buyouts but lower salaries.

Pick Six Podcast: How Mickey Joseph fits into Trev Alberts search- even if he's not the head coach

Omaha World-Herald
On a new episode of the Pick Six Podcast, Tom Shatel and Sam McKewon discuss how big a priority is it to keep Mickey Joseph if he is not the next head coach.

They also ponder if a coach would rather stay in a future one bid big 12 conference or try to win their way to the top 2 of a multi-bid Big Ten. They also compare the talent of Nebraska roster to Creighton.

Sellout of Illinois Game Keeps Husker Streak Alive
Saturday will mark Nebraska football's 387th consecutive sold-out home contest

Nebraska football's home sellout streak will survive at least another week. All tickets to Saturday's game in Lincoln against the Illinois Fighting Illini have been sold. A week ago, about 120 seats for the Illinois game remained available on the Nebraska Athletics ticket site. Over the ensuing days, the number steadily dropped, and by Tuesday evening it was down to 37. Then, on Wednesday morning, voila! The game was listed as sold out.

I think this a more winnable game that we think. Look at Illinois, they've played nobody. Plus its a home game. Now, I don't necessarily think it should be a win, but I think it'll be closer than the current 7.5 point spread.

I at least want to call this: The Huskers will score the most points by any Illinois opponent thus far this season. That number to beat is 23. I think this one will be close. I'll be optimistic, and predict a 28-27 Husker win.

What a pitiful game. I'll just go over some of my takeaways... I was impressed with Illinois. I figured they were pretenders since they really hadn't played anybody yet (still haven't, really), but they beat our boys up like they're the best team the Huskers have played at this point. And they are.

Casey Thompson IS (or was) the offense. Point blank. Any offense we've seen thus far was his heroics. The offensive line is so bad, that it takes a special QB to even make the offense look middle of the road. Without Casey Thompson, there is absolutely zero hope down the stretch. From the look of it, it looked like a pretty serious hand/forearm/elbow injury. So if he's out the rest of the season, that's it.

I don't think Mickey Joseph's audition is going well now. Neither is Mark Whipple's. So frustrating how many times they passed on first down. And even when Casey Thompson went out, they still passed on first down! :grr: At this point just run a freakin wildcat. A fullback would be nice. They boys completely gave up.

When all the dust settles and the next head coach is selected what followers of the program need to get comfortable with is the fact that looking ahead the next 5 to 10 more years and 2 or 3 more head coaches the program will have some good years where it wins 7 or 8 games and scores a minor bowl appearance and some lean years where it wins only 3 or 4 games. They might win 50 of the next 100 matchups. They will sometimes be fun and sometimes excruciatingly painful to watch, but it will probably all balance out. Most other programs deal with this reality, so it shouldn’t come as a shock at this point in time.

Hopefully the last six years count toward the lean years haha... This team is atrocious, and being a fan of them is excruciating. They need to get to a bowl ASAP. Please give me 6-6 next season, and for every season between now and 2030, I will be happy. I need to feel some form of pride in my team. I think I speak for a lot of Husker nation, "I'm sorry for saying 9-3 wasn't good enough!" Have mercy!

Unfortunately, as I stated last week, it turned out to be an accurate in game event this week. The Husker O-Line while overmatched against most opponents, is absolutely awful in pass protection nearly all the time. Now, nobody knows how long Casey Thompson will be out. Mickey says “day to day”. It could be month to month. It’s already October 30th and the season ends on Black Friday..

As NU’s 2022 campaign is circling the drain, a special note about the inconsistent and incompetent play of the Husker defense. After the “Blackshirts” held the door open for Illinois to waltz into the end zone for a TD just before the half, I knew the game was over. And let’s make no mistake, this Illinois team is no offensive juggernaut. Even so- there was NO need to put myself through the misery of watching the 2nd half..although I did (Why, WHY, lol)..

The Huskers may eak out 1 more win this season (2 if they’re lucky), but I also think the idea that Mickey Joseph might have a fair crack at the permanent head coaching job starting in 2023, is also circling the drain.. Perhaps it was never a realistic expectation in the first place…

Looks like another 3 or 4 win season. Sad to see this once proud program fall so far. But they have been bad for a while now, at least the last 6 or 7 years and haven't had a real good team since Pelini's Team that lost to Texas in the Big 12 championship that seems like eons ago.

I disagree. It's hard to see the silver lining without winning games, but there is post Frost/Chinanader improvements. Let's not forget that Joseph and Busch are playing the hand they we're dealt on the fly. What you're saying is reasonable for this season, however there's no reason whoever is next years coach can't recruit in the trenches and make Nebraska competitive in the Big Ten West. That's really what's missing. Even the announcers said as much. If Illinois, Purdue, Iowa(no this year)and Northwestern(every other year) can compete for the West there's no reason Nebraska can not either. Nebraska has more resources and better facilities. It comes down to recruiting the right type of players and coaching. Unfortunately Frost couldn't get it done. If an outside guy comes in I hope it's Aranda. If Mickey & Co somehow get a chance I'd love to see what they can do with their guys in their system. You see it across coach football with programs turning around in only a few seasons without a 5-10 year re-build. This is why coaches with winning records regularly get sacked.

Looking at what’s going on or not going on with this team, the cupboard didn’t have a lot of quality recruits and the ones they had weren’t coached well. The offense line has been a problem and recruits and coaching didn’t fix that problem. And after this year, it is going to take time to build up again. Plus if Mickey Joseph doesn’t stay in some capacity you are going to have some skill players leaving to follow him or just go somewhere they can get better exposure.

Geography and population dictates that kind of distance has been and will always be case. Now, if Nebraska could recruit better in-state then recent times it would help.

I did it too. I don't know why. Really, it was cause I liked the decision to defer the ball to the second half, which is something Scott Frost NEVER did. I wanted to see if the Huskers could make it a game by hopefully scoring a TD and making it 20-16... And then the fumble recover deep in Illinois territory gave me some hope, and zero points to show for it.

I want to retain Mickey Joseph as an assistant to whoever comes in, and I think I heard theres a clause in his contract that guarantees just that. I don't think he'll work as HC just yet. Hopefully have someone come in for a brief 3-5 year period for the sole purpose of righting the ship. Someone good enough and proven enough that the first year is almost a guaranteed 6-6 and in time get them back to a perennial 8-4 or 9-3 contender for the West. Give Mickey time to learn and then take the reins.

I don't know that'll happen. My biggest fear is no coach with any clout will take the job, and we will have to just ride and die with Mickey Joseph. Until Joe Ganz has enough resume, and then we ride and die with him.

Just exactly how many years does Alberts give his personally selected head coach to make it to a bowl game before becoming the next multi millionaire EX-head coach? 3? 4? If/when that doesn’t work out then it becomes the latest replay of Groundhog Day and the process starts all over again, at ground zero.
Let’s not forget that we are almost at the point where no one not old enough to be a grandparent can personally recall the Glory Days of the 1980s and 90s. Alberts isn’t just struggling to find the right person to be head coach. He’s fighting the clock.

Most likely 3 years. I hate to say it but I was kind of hoping we lost Saturday. I just don't think Mickey's ready yet to be head coach. I'd love to see the new coach retain him (even if we have to make him the highest paid assistant).

Mickey Joseph identifies the damaging effects of Scott Frost era in Sports Illustrated article

Mickey tells it like it is

”You have resources like this, there’s no way you should be losing,” Joseph said to SI. “You’ve got to measure this program with others around the country. I know this place has just as many resources as we had at LSU.”

“Known as an ace recruiter wherever he’s gone, Joseph also has gripes with Frost’s recruiting strategy. He told SI that Frost’s staff was “rushing (the process)” in taking recruits, and that “we need f****** players.”

'Don't think he will': Joseph doubts Thompson's availability for Minnesota
The Nebraska football team could be without its starting quarterback on Saturday against Minnesota.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska football team could be without its starting quarterback on Saturday against Minnesota. Speaking on the Husker Football Show, Nebraska interim head coach Mickey Joseph expressed doubts about Casey Thompson's availability after Thompson was injured during the Huskers' loss to Illinois. "Every one of them's got to get ready. We don't know if Casey's gonna be ready. We hope he will, but I don't think he will." Nebraska was ahead at the time Thompson was injured against the Illini, eventually falling 26-9. Thompson was 7-of-15 for 172 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions at the time of his injury. One of his interceptions came on his, final play, when his arm was hit while throwing.

I realize Smother's is not a good fit for Whipple, but I don't know how we could start Hubbard if Thompson can't go. Hubbard just isn't ready.

Time Not on Mickey Joseph’s Side
Nebraska’s loss to Illinois deals a blow to quest for head coaching job

Don't look now, but time is running out not only for the '22 Husker football season but maybe for interim head coach Mickey Joseph as well. Husker A.D. Trev Alberts will announce (probably after the Iowa game) his choice to be the head football coach.

I really did think Mickey had to win that Illinois game, at least. It would have really really boosted his resume to have done something that hadn't been done since 2016, beat a ranked opponent. I actually think if he had done only that, the job might have been his no matter how the rest of the season unfolds... Now I think he HAS to beat all of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa to be considered. He's losing ground now, that's for sure.

I don't think Illinois was a must win but it would've certainly helped. Let's also consider that Joseph doesn't particularly have the same metrics Frost did. We're all assuming Joseph must win 6 games and get to a bowl. Alberts may look at it from a perspective of culture and moving the program in the right direction. No doubt getting a few more wins helps make the case. Still, I really don't think any coach could've stepped in after Frost and done much better with what they have to work with. Losing two of the best O-linemen early and now Henrich really hurt. Given the reality of this teams injuries and lack of depth I think most of us are realistic to not expect a six win season.

What if Mickey can get to 5 wins in the regular season and still possibly make and win a bowl?

Are the expectations for Mickey's "interview" realistic? Perhaps not but it certainly puts more pressure on Alberts now that Joseph is apparently a candidate for the H.C. at Arizona State. Alberts will have come to a decision and Mickey's fate will already be determined before a five win season could come to fruition. But head coach or not Alberts would be foolish to let M.J. completely slip away. As much as large portion of the fan base is desperate to win at any cost, Alberts has to consider more than just win totals. The culture already seems to have improved and its clear Mickey has the ears of the players. Kids really want to play for him as evidenced by his continued recruiting prowess. He continues to verbalize that he "gets it" in terms of what you need to win in The BIG 10. Putting those pieces into place should realistically take any head coach the rest of the season and end of the recruiting cycle. Indeed, Joseph may be running out of time to right a long lost ship...that inevitably takes time. One game should not make or break Joseph's audition the way one game sealed Frost's fate. There's a month(or four more games) left in the season that I believe should be considered along with the totality of what Joseph has already brought to the program. I'm sure Alberts at this point has a short list of outside guys but I believe he should and will likely give Joseph at least through the Wisconsin game to make a proper evaluation.

I definitely think Mickey Joseph is an asset to the team, but his cards are really stacked against him. He needs to win as much as possible to beat out a newcomer coach with proven experience.

On to this next game, Minnesota, and particularly RB Mohammed Ibrahim, they are scary. Especially the fact Minnesota is probably going to shred the Skers on the ground. I just got a bad bad feeling about the next one...

Trev Alberts has a tough decision to make, Mickey has the players attention. Everyone knows he's an excellent recruiter. You wonder how he would do if he had more time.

And are the current pool of potential candidates really that much better than Mickey ? Wouldn't want to be in Alberts shoes right now.

It is interesting to me. I look at Brett Bielema. I don't necessarily like the guy. But, he's a proven Big Ten coach. Some laughed when Illinois hired him. The faithful in this state tried to act like it was a desperation move from Illinois and that Nebraska somehow had the better head coach in Frost. What did Bielema and Illinois do? Proceed to beat the pants off of Frost and Nebraska from the moment he stepped on campus.

The one thing Nebraska hasn't tried is to hire a coach with Big Ten connections. Who knows that you need to run the ball and play smashmouth football. Who has connections to the recruiting area.

The announcers said during the telecast, to paraphrase, "They say Nebraska can't win because of recruiting area, but that's nonsense. If Illinois can fix things with the right coach in a couple of years, so can Nebraska."

I think we are learning, it all comes down to coaching and system. Having the right guy in there who recruits the right players, develops them, and has a system built to win in this league will. Nebraska hasn't really had that since moving to the Big Ten. If they keep trying gimmicks from the Pac 12 or American Conference, they will continue to fail.

I can't argue with you here. I do think coaches that have spent significant time in this area would be fine. Like Leipold, Campbell, Doreen and Kleiman.

I don't want to lose Mickey. It's pretty obvious the players love him 1000 times more than Frost, and he comes off as a likeable guy in the interviews. I just don't think the fans have the patience for him to learn the ropes on the job. If he's kept on as HC all I really see happening is a couple more seasons of 4-8, and he'll be run out of town like every other coach. And that would be sad. But my other side wants to see him get a shot over some lame new hire like Brett Bielema or Bill O'Brien.
