Huskers to honor former football coach Frank Solich at the spring game

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts announced Wednesday night that the Huskers will be honoring Frank Solich at the spring game on April 22. "Frank Solich and his family are going to join us, we're going to have an opportunity to honor Frank and his family," Alberts said during an appearance on Husker Sports Nightly.

Alberts also said that there will be a special announcement regarding Solich during the spring game, which will kick off at 1 p.m. "I'd just really like to encourage Husker fans to help us make it really special," Alberts said. Solich, who coached Nebraska from 1998 to 2003, led the Huskers to the 1999 Big 12 title and an appearance in the 2001 Rose Bowl against Miami.

NU finished No. 3 in the AP Poll in 1999 after defeating Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl. Solich joined Nebraska as a fullback in 1962 — Bob Devaney's first season. He returned to the Huskers as an assistant coach in 1979. After his career with NU, Solich led Ohio University from 2005 to 2020. He led the Bobcats to 12 winning seasons and 11 bowl appearances. Solich is the winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history.

Regents will consider contract with HDR for design of Memorial Stadium renovation

An Omaha-based engineering company has been selected to design the Memorial Stadium of the future. The University of Nebraska chose HDR at the end of a competitive selection process to serve as architect/engineer for the renovation project, which could cost between $200 million and $500 million. The Board of Regents will consider approving the contract at its April 7 board meeting. Regents will meet at the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Nebraska's Herbie Husker celebrates 50th anniversary with an updated look

LINCOLN, Neb. (KPTM) — Nebraska's popular mascot Herbie Husker received an updated look for his 50th anniversary, according to Nebraska Athletics. Nebraska Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Trev Alberts and University leaders led the development of Herbie's updates making sure to maintain the state's agricultural background. Herbie's new look closely resembles the original which is fitting as this next season will mark Herbie's 50th anniversary. When Nebraska headed to the Cotton Bowl in 1973, Artist Dirk West created a cornhusker cartoon.

Just saw a video of Tom Osborne at the Solich event. Man he is looking old, but still an excellent speaker. He has a sincere quality about him you just don't see very often and no big ego. I can see why he was so difficult to replace. They never did find a suitable replacement, Solich might of come the closest. Nebraska should have been more patient with Frank.

Huskers welcome back Solich: ‘Staying away only hurt myself’

Lincoln, Neb. (AP) — It took a long time for Frank Solich to put aside the bitterness he felt toward Nebraska following his controversial firing. Twenty years and some prodding by athletic director Trev Alberts later, Solich was back at Memorial Stadium on Friday to begin a weekend of events honoring him for his contributions as a player, assistant and head coach.

After he left Nebraska, Solich became the Mid-American Conference’s all-time wins leader at Ohio. And he remained mostly estranged with the Lincoln school since some of the decision-makers responsible for his firing were still around — despite his strong ties to the state and friendship with his predecessor, Hall of Fame coach Tom Osborne. “At first, I felt it was best for me just to stay completely away,” Solich said at a news conference, “and then it got to the point I felt like, hey, maybe it’s time to look at this through a different lens and look at all the great people that are here, people I know and worked with, the fans. I was in some ways only hurting myself in continuing to stay away, so I’m glad to be back.”

. Some good closure to an ugly period in Husker history. Is the curse broken ?

Nebraska football previews 2023 season, new coaching staff in spring game

LINCOLN, Neb. — First-year head coach Matt Rhule made his Memorial Stadium debut in Nebraska football’s spring game Saturday, along with a new and improved Herbie Husker.

66,045 Husker fans got their first chance to see Rhule in action, with hopes that the former NFL head coach can bring the program back from its consecutive six seasons under. The annual red-and-white matchup kicked off with a successful 49-yard field goal from junior kicker Timmy Bleekrode. Sophomore Spencer Pankratz later joined Bleekrode with a 38-yard field goal. Closing out the first quarter, sophomore running back Gabe Ervin Jr. recorded a 7-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful pass play to senior wide receiver Billy Kemp IV for the two-point conversion.

Junior quarterback Jeff Sims, the Georgia Tech transfer, secured a 7-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to put the white team up 21-0.

Sophomore quarterback Heinrich Haarberg’s second-quarter fumble led to a recovery by sophomore linebacker Michael Booker III, carrying for a 53-yard touchdown and marking the red team’s first, and only, points of the game. White defeated Red in this year's matchup, 21-7.

Not surprised here. Jeff Sims looks like he could be the real deal. Best (looking) athlete we had at QB ever? Guys built like a NFL WR. Pretty excited to see what he can do in Rhule's offense.

Yeah and the way Rhule has talked about incorporating the qb run game more, I didn't think that was a fit for Casey. He can run but is smaller and not sure he'd hold up carrying the ball more and taking those extra hits. I wish nothing but the best for him and hope he lands in a good situation for him.

Casey Thompson enters transfer portal, Nebraska down to 3 QBs, had 6 just a few days ago. Transfer portal brings with it crazy times for college football.

Former Husker QB Casey Thompson reportedly transfers to Florida Atlantic

Casey Thompson has found a new home.

The former Nebraska quarterback is heading to Florida Atlantic, announcing his new transfer destination today. Thompson, the Huskers' starting quarterback in 2022, entered the transfer portal on April 28. At FAU, Thompson will be reunited with his old head coach at Texas, Tom Herman, who is entering his first season at the helm of the Owls.

Nebraska adds another fullback with FBS experience.

A Nebraska native with FBS experience is transferring home to play fullback for the Huskers. Former Omaha Skutt and later Notre Dame fullback Barret Liebentritt announced on social media that he was transferring to Nebraska from Notre Dame. The 6-foot, 235-pound Liebentritt appeared in 13 games for Notre Dame in 2022 — all on special teams. In South Bend, Liebentritt was listed as a tight end, but will move to fullback in Lincoln.

Nebraska football added offensive tackle depth out of the transfer portal on Tuesday afternoon, picking up a commitment from Utah offensive tackleTyler Knaak following an official visit that ended Tuesday. The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Knaak said he began hearing from Nebraska about a week ago, and made an official visit beginning on Monday.

maybe it's me being a husker homer, but I can't see why the Colorado game isn't in the evening, too. Lot of heat around that one...and I'd love it if we put down Colorado during a night game

For Fox, their featured game is the 11AM game. It’s the game they promote all week. Big Noon Kickoff.

It's a big deal on Fox as they most likely will also take their pregame show (their verion of GameDay) there.

That being said, I love night time away games. The whole day is free and it's a good finish to a Saturday.

Fan Day is July 30.

Nebraska Football fans will have an opportunity to meet the 2023 Huskers on Sunday, July 30 at the 2023 Nebraska Football Fan Day presented by Ludacka Wealth Partners. This year’s Fan Day will be held inside the Hawks Championship Center from 3-5 p.m.

While the event will move inside to a climate-controlled environment, the seating for Fan Day will be like past years. Players will be seated with their position groups throughout the field in the Hawks Center.

Fans planning to attend 2023 Nebraska Football Fan Day should familiarize themselves with the following information.

Parking

Lots around Memorial Stadium and the Hawks Center will be free and open to the public. Fans are encouraged to park in the followings lots: Lot 8 (North Stadium), Champions Club, Lot 1 (Stadium Driving Parking Garage), Lot 5 (NE of Hawks Center) or Lot 9 (14th and Salt Valley Roadway Garage). Some lots may be unavailable because of scheduled lot maintenance.
Fan Entrances

Fans will be able to enter the Hawks Center through two entrances beginning at 3 p.m.
Lines will form outside of the Hawks Center on the southwest and northwest corners of the building.
Nebraska’s Clear Bag policy is not in effect for Fan Day, but all fans and carry-in items are subject to inspection.
Following the completion of Fan Day at 5 p.m., fans will be asked to allow players and football staff to leave the field to continue their packed schedule for the day. The team will begin preseason practice on Monday, July 31.
Coach Rhule

Head Coach Matt Rhule’s autograph line will be limited to young Husker fans entering 8th grade and younger.
Approximately 400 children will be randomly selected to be part of Coach Rhule’s line.
Parents wishing to sign their children up for an opportunity to be part of Coach Rhule’s line should sign their child up for by Monday, July 24 at 5 p.m. The sign-up form can be accessed at Huskers.com/autograph-line. Selected fans will be notified by Wednesday, July 26.
Specific details regarding Coach Rhule’s line will be sent directly to those individuals who are randomly selected.
Player Seating and Fan Lines

The seating arrangement and lines for players will be similar to recent Fan Days. Players will be seated on the field near the East Sideline of Hawks, with lines running across the field from West to East.
Assistant coaches will be seated with their respective position groups.
A detailed map of player seating, entrance locations and other information will be available closer to Fan Day.
Event staff members will be stationed at each line to indicate traffic flow and where fans should line up.
As the event nears completion, event staff members at the end of long lines will do their best to advise fans on whether they are likely to make it through a line before the conclusion of Fan Day.
Autograph Items/Husker Fan Shop

Autograph cards with a full 2023 roster and other items will be available for fans.
Fans are asked to limit their autograph requests to one item per player/coach.
A Husker Fan Shop location with the latest adidas apparel, 2023 posters, and other merchandise will be located inside the Hawks Championship Center. Additional information on Husker Fan Shop locations will be available soon.
A marketing tent will be available near the middle of the field.
Restrooms/Concessions

Restrooms will be available in the main lobby of the Hawks Championship Center.
Water and pop will available for sale on the field during the Fan Day.
Memorial Stadium

While Nebraska Football Fan Day festivities will take place in the Hawks Center for the comfort of fans and players, limited access to Memorial Stadium will be available for a fan photo opportunity.
Fans wishing to access the Memorial Stadium field, should exit the Hawks Center and enter the Memorial Stadium at Gate 11 (NW corner).
