I don't see how either of these things can be derived from a single set of 3 renderings of a canopy project. We can already tell Omaha is effectively getting a new terminal internally from the top down layouts we've been getting for years.

And even if those renderings are accurate I don't know of anyone that cares about "old ugly brick" on an exterior facade of an airport. That is borderline ridiculous. People care about the amenities offered be it flights/destinations/price, ease of use issues i.e. road access security lines, etc, and interior amenities i.e. concessions/bathrooms/hold areas.
Bob from Omaha wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 3:33 pm Of course, there haven't been new renderings and until there is a ribbon cutting the whole thing could change
That would probably be wise...
Bearcat06 wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 1:57 pm I wonder what the thought was building a several million dollar pergola prior to the terminal revamp (I mean we've gone how many decades without covered drop-off/pick-up lanes so what's another 3-5 years?) versus having a canopy come off the new terminal like a large overhang? Surely it be feasible from an engineering perspective, but maybe cost prohibitive?
Presumably because they got nearly $40 million+ in Federal grants to do the canopy and the terminal drive work already and have determined that the exterior footprint of the terminal doesn't change in a significant way that allows them to do it now while they're still in the process of finalizing the design of the terminal.

I'm not convinced the renderings are anything more than what the canopy is intended to look like. There isn't any thing to indicate who designed the canopy and or what stage it was designed at. It is quite possible to me it wasn't Corgan (who is the architect for the terminal). We know Holder, the construction contractor on the terminal isn't doing this... The disclaimer on the website is there for a reason. But yes this over-reaction to a terminal design when these likely aren't reflective of said terminal design is quite entertaining.

That said, I wouldn't necessary be surprised if that brick is there to stay. That closest wall on the South side of the terminal doesn't change in footprint on renderings and is ultimately going to be airport authority offices. They may not want to continue the windows there. Then your choice is to over lay the brick with some other material or just roll with it. Same thing with the control tower. We know it isn't moving. So again do you keep the brick or overlay something?

Fundamentally there are likely going to be some limitations on what can be done exterior wise too with trying to keep a terminal going at the same time during the entire construction.
We've been waiting since the 1980's for an updated terminal...we have nothing to do but overreact for now.

This canopy is so disappointing. I was thinking “Grand Rapids, but more architecturally interesting.”

This is the George Banks Backyard-BBQ-Reception at home equivalent terminal/canopy design. THIS AIRPORT NEEDS TWO LEVELS OF FRONT DRIVE PERIOD YOU CANNOT TELL ME OTHERWISE. You have TWO LEVELS of customer space with TWO different functions ON TOP of one another. It would be different if baggage claim was on the north side, security in the center, and ticketing on the south, with a mezzanine level to rise to the gates… we don’t have that folks. This is a cluster and as it grows, it will only become worse and more expensive to correct.

OAA- Build a temp terminal like Reno/Tahoe did and do this right. And STOP BEING SO SLOW TO SHOW THIS STUFF.

I have ALWAYS defended and supported the OAA in my posts on this forum (I invite you to review them), but this flat, boring design is literally the single greatest waste of millions of dollars that could otherwise be used to create an iconic piece that I can think of at the moment.

I typically follow the idea “if you don’t have anything nice or constructive to say, then don’t post” - probably why I haven’t in several years - but this is it.

Total BS, ugly, boring to go with the counter-functional, and likely to be confusing, new front drive.

Boooo! Boooo! Get the “Ninas” and “Fraunks” involved before this really becomes a “turdport”

And kudos to those of you understanding my stupid “Father of the Bride” movie reference.

I highly respect you, Mr.Nuke- and I can’t think of a time when you were factually inaccurate. But here, I think you are wrong. 100%

It is not that most people are literally paying that close attention- it is in the details, thousands of small ones like this, that collectively create an aesthetic and sense of purpose and function in a pleasing manner that most will never consider in detail. They just know it feels a certain way. Overall, details matter. I want my moneys worth. Getting a feeling that a city feels bigger and more traveled-to by an impression made by its airport is not a crazy or unreasonable notion, in fact, I believe such impressions (all though not airport-specific) have factually lead to significant growth and economic expansion in several major cities, all the way back to Chicago after the fire.

And all I'm saying is lets wait and actually see what they do before jumping off a cliff. And stop setting unrealistic expectations you know aren't going to be met. You're only setting yourself up for disappointed.
Ryan Air wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 8:33 pm OAA- Build a temp terminal like Reno/Tahoe did and do this right.
We've know for 10 years they weren't going to do this. It is like complaining about not having an elevated upper and lower roads. We know it isn't going to happen. It serves no purpose to complain about it at this point. And even then I get the feeling based on this that some people would be complaining that the lower road is too dark and doesn't get enough natural light after today's posts.

Or this...
joleo wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 3:56 pm floors be raised etc etc. I assumed the skywalks would be replaced with new ones that would go straight instead of angling down when the new terminal is created with much higher floor to floor, apparently that isn't the case.
How were you expecting that? Listen I'm not an architect or an engineer, but I have enough common sense to realize when you plan on essentially using the same footprint on the front side of the terminal, and especially when you plan on keeping said terminal open during construction you aren't changing the floor height. And quite frankly the height in that part of the terminal isn't really an issue. The walkways to the security checkpoints feel cramped right now, but those are ultimately going to be gone.

I’m not someone who has traveled to all the continents and been to hundreds of airports, and maybe it’s just me, but the old saying that you never get a second chance to make a first impression really holds true. For me, the single most important and long lasting impression I have ever gotten from almost every city I have ever visited (NYC, London and Paris being the only exceptions) came when I stepped foot into their airport, or even while I was still in my arriving plane, looking at the airport through the window. Beautiful airports that are logically laid out make me feel that I have arrived in a progressive, civic oriented city. And dumpy, dull, outdated and/or ill functioning airports leave me with a pretty much permanent negative attitude about that city.
Omaha has a chance to really “Wow!” the traveling public, and make our citizens proud. Don’t screw up this chance, OAA! It may be another 40+ years before you get a do-over.

I totally get you.

I think of Zurich- before the satellite and renovation of main terminal. It was sort of meh. But after, it is distinctly Swiss.

As to the separation of departures and arrivals on multiple levels, it’s just plain dumb not to do it. Otherwise you basically have an hourglass design where all the grains of sand (people) are funneled into one knot in front of the airport. At times that is bound to create unnecessary chaos.
Two airports - one very busy and one not so much - both operating with very limited space, managed to get this separation done beautifully. Look at how Chicago Midway did it. They moved the ticketing/departure area upstairs and into their parking garage, separated by a highway from the main terminal. Passengers flying out of MDW barely would notice this, because it flows seamlessly. The same thing was essentially done in Key West, Florida, where a tiny 4 gate airport still managed to construct a brand new second level entry road, without causing too much confusion during construction. Ticketing is in a new structure built in the front of the existing airport. Baggage claim remains downstairs. Of note, for the time being KW has no jetways, and passengers walk out to the tarmac and climb portable stairs to their planes, like us old timers used to do at Eppley. (In another year or so the KW terminal construction will be completed and jetways will be installed.)
Why can’t Eppley move ticketing into the second or third level of the south garage? Run the entrance driveway through the garage. Leave the existing traffic lanes for arrivals only.
It isn’t rocket science, folks.

I’m not complaining- I’m calling them out for continuing to do it wrong. And it IS wrong. It is nonsense and I will say just that so long as their plans are such.

I was soooooooo on board for the canopy. This is just so…. It’s just so…. Omaha. Well I guess I changed my mind. Nail on the head, target audience approves. Hey, I like my Subaru!

But seriously, those artist renderings look like the absolutely cheapest, ugliest, “function” maybe but “form” forget it design. It basically looks like Soviet style architecture circa 1960.

This was kind of point in the last post I get it that this is a message board but we've known for 10 years that they're not going to do it. Keep discussing away, but it isn't going to happen.
nativeomahan wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 9:43 pm Run the entrance driveway through the garage. Leave the existing traffic lanes for arrivals only.

It is evidently more complicated than what you think. And they've subsequently made design decisions i.e the 2nd garage and particularly the rental car center that would make it even more complicated yet.
Ryan Air wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 9:46 pm I’m not complaining- I’m calling them out for continuing to do it wrong. And it IS wrong. It is nonsense and I will say just that so long as their plans are such.
I think criticism is fair and they certainly aren't above reproach. I will say as you noted that like you, I have generally defended OAA. And quite frankly, what they've actually ended up doing over the past 10 years is pretty good. The rental car facility is top notch. The new parking garage is nice, etc. So I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now especially given we haven't seen anything terminal specific. And the terminal is really what ultimately matters here.

Like I said I don't think they're above reproach though. The demand based master plan makes a ton of sense for a lot of reasons. One of the significant ones is that as non-taxing entity they need to pay for stuff. So a new parking garage when you can afford it makes sense. You want to ultimately do the terminal roadway and canopy, we'll here's $40 million in Federal funds. Again that makes sense. I agree the worry there aesthetically is that, yeah the rental car facility looks awesome. I have no doubt the terminal building is going to be great, but I'm curious to see if using a bunch of different architects each time is going to make a cohesive product from the outside. Again other people will disagree, I think that is less important than the terminal itself, but I recognize it is still an issue. I'm still not convinced it won't be either when all is said and done. Like I've been saying lets wait and see what they do.

And again like I said talking about the upper and lower roads or a temporary terminal or building the new terminal at a different spot or building an airport in Ashland are beating a dead horse to me. We all know it isn't going to happen. Would I like to have known why they dropped the upper and lower roads a decade ago? Yeah I'd be curious. But I also know it isn't going to happen either... Discussing it every 6 months i.e. the upper lower road serves no purpose.

Don't get this part, because I'm the only one that thinks it is fine. I just don't judge airports by their canopy's maybe I'm the weird one here... Could it be better? Perhaps. Again I'm not a canopy expert. The only difference I see between the renderings and Grand Rapids is one is flat and one is wavy. And Grand Rapids almost had to go with something like that to clear the glass elevator shaft.
joleo wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 3:56 pm what are they trying to hide? Did the airport just give it to Hawkins or did they publicly bid the work like a typical public infrastructure project? If it wasn't publicly bid, I bet there is a 30% premium being paid. I'm in the industry and know this stuff very well for my career.
This part also makes no sense. The airport solicits bids in the public record, historically has had meetings for bigger construction projects i.e. most of Our best terminal information is from the initial airport terminal development bid meeting and then now Holder's initial subcontracter bid meeting. The fact that Hawkins got the canopy project, Holder got the terminal, and Haussman got the parking garage/rental facility is a pretty good sign they're conducting competitive bidding. And again holder just conducted bidding for the first phase of the terminal development with the CUP.

Something as simple as commissioning artists to paint highly visible sections of the canopy or pergola or concrete umbrella or whatever we end up calling it would seem to me to result in a low cost, high impact improvement to this otherwise sterile project.
It’s done in high traffic areas elsewhere.

I'll say this, and strictly from a casual flyer's point of view...

The canopy looks fine, and if they used any type of colored lighting, it'd be beautiful at night and still look nice during the day.
The glass facade looks good, in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the cream colored brick, but it could easily be reclad with something the color and texture of steelhouse and it'd really pop. Ok, maybe not that dark, or maybe not grey, but it helps to explain what I'm trying to say. If you did that, it would not look bad at all. If you simply painted it a different color and added elements similar to those used on the garage at children's, it would fit it with what was used on the garage at Eppley
Image
Image
Again, proper use of lighting could be stunning, and is simple/clean/not cheap.

I would say a double decker drop off area would be great, but I'm sure there is more that could be done with streamlining the process in the interior to alleviate congestion on the outside, specifically through increased entrance points and airport employees to assist people....and maybe a wider sidewalk area so people can move out of the way more easily.

End Rant....just very disappointing for Omaha and future generations.
Yes it was publicly bid, here is the notice that went out from OAA:

OMAHA AIRPORT AUTHORITY PUBLIC NOTICES 11/9/22

As for bid tabs, you would probably have to reach out to someone with OAA directly as I haven't seen anything posted online anywhere. From what I saw of the early design, there was quite a bit of single source specialty items spec'd so I do wonder if that played a role in the higher prices. It's always hard to tell why things end up so high without seeing a set of plans and specs but it's impossible to get easy access to them unless you know someone bidding the work.

Per OWH, that canopy is not just a pergola, but it will enclose the drop off/pick up area with glass. I am reserving critical comments on the preliminary rendering, but I think it will look nice based on the initial official rendering. We don't have any renderings yet of the gate expansion and interior, and I think that's more important. We all knew this portion that they are showing wasn't going to be brand spanking new, so considering they are working around the existing structure, I think it looks fine so far.

Omaha to San Francisco ends around nov 1st.

I think the times hurt, a midnight arrival was terrible in Omaha, should have been 10pm arrive to Omaha.

Shows coming back in April for the time being.

Interesting last march it was a smaller A320 and they increased the plane size to a 737-900 about 2 months out yet it doesn’t resume until April, assuming it does come back.

I also imagine SF’s continued economic struggles mean there’s less demand for flights, though it’s possible we’re about to see a greater push for back to the office in that region.

I'm pretty sure they structured it to capture business travelers making short trips. I've even thought about doing one-day trips. In my experience, the nonstop flights have consistently been full, and I haven't been able to fly on them.

Gosh! That’s a blast from the past (love the old taxis, too!)
As I recall the airport used corrugated metal sewer pipe for that skywalk, so they had to do something to try to disguise that fact. Fortunately it didn’t stick around too long.

I am not a big fan of the canopy. I do think it would look better without the bridges though. But we will see how the official terminal renderings look.

On another note. Delta is adding an additional frequency to LGA. It is mentioned in the article below.

Taking out the pedestrian bridges would take out the benefit of crossing the street in climate controlled. I know that when it's below freezing and I park in this garage, I want to drag my luggage through the pedestrian bridge, instead of crossing the street outside.

How can the airport / City of Omaha get away with constantly watering the street along Abbot Dr? I am not talking about the street being wet; I am talking about when the sprinklers are running in no wind situations, they spray across most of one of the lanes of traffic high enough that it requires using the wipers for a moment. Come on. If I did this at home, I am betting I would get ticketed. Not just once, either I drive this many days between 11 and 1, and I cannot count the days this happens. I will give it a pass when windy, but as already stated, that is NOT the reason.

I've never been to San Francisco, but I connect through there when the non-stop is offered. It's a major hub for international airlines. Saves me from having to make a stop to get to LAX and then fly overseas.

On track to do about 4.8 million or so. All things being equal could be closer to 5 million.
If the numbers continue to hold, I currently have an estimate of about 5,182,267.

We'll see how the summer goes. March, May-Aug and Oct have traditionally been the months with the most traffic through Eppley.
Crazy that Delta is actually down year over year. Impressive numbers from American.

So is this canopy project another delaying tactic for starting on the new terminals?

I was looking at the pictures of the canopy and noticed something. The south end of the terminal is shown glassed in with escalators as you walk in. Also the signage on the south end of the drive say Security. So south end is for departures and the north end is for arrivals. No upper and lower roads.

I flew American last month with a mainline connection in Charlotte and there wasn't an empty seat on the plane

Oh yeah. I’m always kinda shocked because I fly through Charlotte frequently to get to Omaha and it’s basically always full.

I don't even remember the last time I wasn't on a completely-full flight. It's almost 100% of flights I've been on since the pandemic started that have been fully booked.

I would think they would have to extend the canopy farther out before entering/exiting. I can see a ton of snow/ice blowing into the ends based on the picture. Only the middle would be dry.

I get the impression that DL isn't going after the same demo that AA and UA are. The last couple trips I've priced, DL was more expensive for both bux and points. Reading airliners.net, much of the discussion revolves around that they're putting more business class on their long-haul/wide-body flights compared to economy.

That was my guess for the lack of divided driveways. It’s a format used at some medium-sized California airports like Oakland, San Jose, Long Beach, and Ontario. Terminal 2 at Minneapolis, and Dallas-Love do this too.

Mr.Nuke wrote: Thu Jun 22, 2023 1:07 pm Eppley just launched their new terminal website. So far it is just about the canopy project, but they do have some preliminary renderings of the terminal drive. As well as potentially the new terminal facade. They note the renderings (presumably the terminal part, are preliminary and subject to change.)

They should just spend money on painting the exterior walls a fresh coat of whitewash (or whatever shade of eggshell is on the new parking structure). Seriously. The beige brick makes the airport look more ancient that it already is. And then maybe more glass and teal accents in the interiors. Paint the jetways seashell (because if they're not willing to invest in glass jetways, at least mimic the color of...glass jetways).
