The airline announced Wednesday that it would end flights to and from Austin on August 6. Flights to and from Minneapolis and Atlanta will end on August 8.

Red Way officials said the airline was not prepared for the demand of these flights, and they’ve since become unsustainable.

Yeah looks like they updated, was certainly fine due to low demand.

Ok. They did the prudent thing. Other airlines and for that matter other businesses make such decisions. Restaurants change menu items, and even close underperforming locations. Perhaps Redway has other destinations under consideration.

I'm torn on this because I agree to a large extent it was/is the prudent thing to do. That said, literally 48 hours ago they essentially said they intended to operate these routes through the end of November. So what changed over the past two days other than an airport board meeting yesterday? And I'm okay with Lincoln pulling the plug on their end too. Neither way is it necessarily a "good" thing though.
Bob from Omaha wrote: Wed Jul 26, 2023 2:12 pm Perhaps Redway has other destinations under consideration.
It doesn't sound likely besides the aforementioned mystery destination based on the latest article. Said article also generally backs up that they didn't really have any idea on what they were doing picking markets the first go around. Lastly,
So far, Red Way has tapped $928,398 from the $3 million pot formed by the city of Lincoln and Lancaster County from American Rescue Plan Act funds.
That is a ton of cash to burn through in the first 2 months.

The problem now is who is going to book on the new "wow" destination? No one wants to have a vacation planned around flights, only to have the flights canceled due to low demand. This is a reputation killer.

Yeah that is the risk in an operation like this especially when the carrier doesn't have alternative options for you.

I was so focused on waiting on Lincoln's monthly numbers and didn't think to look at the reverse (i.e. the airports Red Way is flying to), but per an airliners.net post...
Atlanta
529 passengers on 10 total flights in June 2023
52.9 passengers per flight, 35.3% full @ 150 seats

Minneapolis
332 passengers on 10 total flights in June 2023
33.2 passengers per flight, 22.1% full @ 150 seats

Orlando
1083 passengers on 14 total flights in June 2023
77.4 passengers per flight, 51.6% full @ 150 seats

I don't know that i'd call it shocking. I've been on record from the get go about how unlikely this is to succeed. What is surprising to me is how much of the ARPA funding they managed to blow through in less than 2 months. There margin for success here just got a heck of a lot thinner.

The Minneapolis and Alanta loads are terrible. I can see why they dropped those routes. For comparison Sun Country started similar irregular service from Minneapolis to Eppley on 5/26. That flight operated 18 times in June with 2,117 passengers or 117.6 per flight.

Routes take time to develop. That is why the ARPA pot of money is there to help hopefully subsidize the operation while things to grow. With that said, I'm wondering if either side regrets trying to start so many destinations at once.

The thing about Atlanta and Minneapolis is that they compete with daily frequent service from OMA, though the price and lack of driving about an hour should have mitigated that. I'm confused as to why they chose Atlanta, Austin, Minneapolis and Dallas. Had I been asked I'd have suggested sticking with leisure destinations. Orlando, Tampa, Phoenix, Las Vegas, maybe some California cities? I know OMA has flights to those cities as well but I'd think LNK might have a better shot at filling planes.

Lincoln area residents just might be conditioned to driving to Omaha for most of their flights. In addition no doubt many have frequent flier accounts with Southwest, United, Delta and American Airlines.

Thus far the LNK web site hasn't posted June's numbers. I'll concede that they aren't the quickest to update the web site but I have to wonder how interested they are in making the numbers public.

These two were cheap/shotty research seeing that people had been flying to ATL and MSP while the Delta routes were operating and that some people were still flying to those cities after Delta left. I'm with you though there should've been a deeper understanding that 1) really not that many people were actually wanting to go to Atlanta or Minneapolis it was more a product that you could go there directly and 2) the frequencies from Omaha on Delta/Southwest (ATL)/ and Delta/ now Sun Country (MSP) can kill you even if people want to go.
Bob from Omaha wrote: Fri Jul 28, 2023 12:26 pm I'm confused as to why they chose Atlanta, Austin, Minneapolis and Dallas.
I'm almost 100% convinced the Atlanta and Minneapolis were PDEW plays based on the prior Delta service. See above. Austin is indefensible.

With you too, and that appears to be more where they're headed towards with the winter schedule. I still don't have much hope for them, because like you said they're going head-to-head now on a lot more routes with Eppley. I think there is/was a potential niche play on some California routes or Florida routes that Omaha doesn't get daily or at all, but they don''t seem to be going that route.

The Lincoln airport finally released the statistics for June. Red Way started ops June 8 I believe and in June it flew just short of 4,000 people. I think some destinations didn't start til late in the month. Nuke almost has me convinced that Red Way's days are numbered. I'm disheartened by the bragging about sales one day and "nuking" three destinations another. In reading comments in stories in the Lincoln paper a number of current and potential customers are leary of buying and then being abandoned with little to no notice.
I honestly thought that it was an interesting idea. The execution has been amateurish and has the hallmarks of a Marx Bros movie.

Lincoln's June numbers are out. Red Way had 3,993 total passengers for the month on 66 flights (60.5 per flight) for a load factor of 40.33%.

This is what I was afraid of. By canceling flights you now have a self-fulfilling prophecy that this will fail. No one wants to gamble on taking a trip and then having the transportation fall through.

It's one thing to have the airline say they'll refund ticket prices. How about any other non refundable items? Maybe a deposit for a hotel, cruise, whatever? I'd be cautious from here on. Then again, I'm not buying tickets from them anyway. Detroit added Turkish Airlines recently so anybody wanna hop on & see what's fun in Turkey?

It isn't a great situation, but what was the alternative? They burned through 1/3 of their ARPA reserve in the first two months and like Bob said they weren't operating a full schedule for a large part of June. With that in mind if we project that out, sure they could've operated these routes as scheduled through November to keep passengers with reservations happy. If they did so though, the ARPA funds likely would been fully exhausted and there would be no airline left to fly a "winter" schedule. Pissing off some people that had reservations, and lets by honest we know it isn't all that many based on the advanced bookings, while obviously not great seems like the least bad option for them.
Bob from Omaha wrote: Tue Aug 01, 2023 5:18 pm I'd be cautious from here on. Then again, I'm not buying tickets from them anyway.
People arguably should've been cautious with them from the beginning for multiple reasons.

I'm still wondering if that abrupt shift wasn't the airline, but the airport. I guess it doesn't really matter who did it in the end though...

I cannot tell if you are being sarcastic or not, but Turkish is a great airline and is used by many people for transit instead of flying a legacy carrier.

My reading of it is that the airport "created" the airline. No it doesn't matter. In the end someone had to be the adult and say "Ok. That's enough. Time to be realistic."

The numbers you came up with are an average. My guess is that the routes that were dropped had to be worse than 60 a flight. When I was in business and we wanted to bring out something new we spent the time researching the need for it. Did the folks in Lincoln throw darts at a map? Market research is critical. This is embarrassing.
Probably explains why there hasn't been any news coming from the airport or anywhere else since the shoe dropped.

Yeah I mean of the 3 routes that were cancelled we know the exact June average load factors for two of them. Atlanta was at 43 passengers per flight and Minneapolis was at 32. I'd assume Austin was in that range as well.

Like I said from the start it isn't clear to me that they actually did. This is from the airport's master plan using 2015 and 2019 data. There is some overlap, some divergence.

Ok. I was wrong to think that they could do the prudent thing and plan ahead. Throwing a dart or spinning a wheel didn't work for what I thought was great out of the box thinking. The original destinations were a bit weird. Dallas, Minneapolis & Atlanta aren't top of mind as far as leisure destinations are involved. Austin? Not as much as it is as a high tech hub, but Lincoln doesn't have a large high tech community that needs to go to Austin on a regular basis. Nashville, Orlando & Vegas, yeah, I can see that. Having to get your luggage and recheck it for a connection isn't much fun. Neither is arriving late & missing a connection on an airline that has no agreement with Red Way.
In the end they still have some cash so they have to make a choice:
1) Use the rest of the piggy bank to try to fix Red Way, or
2) Back to the drawing board and try to bribe a mainline carrier to add a single destination, like a hub. But which hub? They already have service to Chicago, Denver and Houston. I'm assuming Delta isn't interested. American to Phoenix?

I don't know. I maintain that speedy bus or rail to Eppley would achieve the goal of more destinations, frequencies, carriers, etc., but I just don't see it happening. Nor do I see an airport between Omaha & Lincoln. EVER.

So what's left? Minimal service to Lincoln, which just added on to it's terminal.

I'm still waiting for the "jaw dropping" new destination on Red Way. "Wangler said that mystery destination could be announced later this week and would bring the number of Red Way's destinations in the winter months to five." This is from the Journal Star on July 24th, 2 weeks ago. I'll wait and put a pillow under my jaw.

I think one of the problems is if you did market research I'm wondering if you would've actually found a market at all. From the 2019 O/D numbers the #1 market was Chicago with 22,920 passengers. That equates to 63 passengers daily or just 31 passengers daily each way (PDEW).

Obviously Red Way and LNK went out of their way to avoid directly competing with United, but I wouldn't attempt to throw 150 seats onto a market with a PDEW of 31 much less some of the random routes they tried. But yeah, I don't believe the O/D numbers are probably LNK's true market due to the massive leakage to Omaha. With that said, I'm not really sure how you effectively do market research without it. And the data shows this was probably an ill-advised idea especially with how they started operations.
Bob from Omaha wrote: Mon Aug 07, 2023 4:48 pm In the end they still have some cash so they have to make a choice:

Yeah so for they seem to be opting for number 1 and hoping the sun destinations do better in the winter. And they should, the question is if they'll do good enough...

Re: 2) I'm assuming Delta probably isn't interested either given their recent pullout. And on American recall that LNK had a $750,000 federal grant for service to DFW from 2018-2022 that AA never bit on. Said grant eventually got transferred to IAH and the city and UNL kicked in another $500,000. I don't see AA being that interested given they turned down the subsidy the first time, are getting paid to fly to Grand Island already and have a moderately large station 50 miles away in Omaha.

The one potentially interesting play that they may or may not have tried is that CommuteAir who is operating the IAH route some flights to DEN and has a maintenance base at LNK, also has a large operation (essentially a hub) at IAD. If you threw the rest of the pot at them and United right now, based on the O/D numbers above and the fact that United doesn't have the direct east coast EWR flights out of OMA anymore, I'm wondering if that route couldn't be successfully developed. That still would leave you effectively with one airline something they may or may not want (but are quickly on the path to getting again regardless).
Bob from Omaha wrote: Mon Aug 07, 2023 4:48 pm I don't know. I maintain that speedy bus or rail to Eppley would achieve the goal of more destinations, frequencies, carriers, etc., but I just don't see it happening. Nor do I see an airport between Omaha & Lincoln. EVER.
I'm still of the opinion that there isn't enough traffic going to LNK as it is that would lead OMA to get more destinations. The airports are already effectively combined when 96% of the traffic is going to OMA.

At this point I agree with Nuke. I don't think there's much LNK can do. So, there they are tilting at windmills.
What I simply fail to understand is the expansion of the LNK terminal. Blowing $40-50 million and using property taxing authority to do it. In their own words:
"Long overdue updates will modernize the amenities available in LNK’s 50-year-old terminal:

Updated infrastructure: These renovations will include enhancements for passenger safety in the terminal security areas, as well as a fully renovated lobby on the main floor, including flooring, lighting and other fixtures. This project will also incorporate new COVID-19 design concepts and remodeled airport administrative offices.
Two new gates: LNK will increase its capacity by adding two gates, as well as installing two additional passenger boarding bridges to accommodate peak hour demand. These additions will also leave room for additional expansion.
Full TSA PreCheck Capability: Infrastructure will be put into place to allow TSA to run a full PreCheck, if implemented by TSA then registered travelers will be able to enjoy the same PreCheck amenities experienced at larger commercial service airports.
Improved amenities: Full service post-security food and beverage options will make traveling in and out of Lincoln much sweeter!"

Two new gates? For what?
The tax is to last 12 years for Lincoln homeowners.
Peak hour demand? What, two planes at once?

Anyway, I don't live in Lincoln so I won't be paying the tax. I love Lincoln and I think what's happening downtown is great. Too bad LNK couldn't have that kind of leadership.

I’ve never ever been to the Lincoln airport. Doesn’t it basically operate like a suburban Omaha airport? I’m curious to know just how many flights per day depart from the airport.

Couldn't LNK just be turned into a regional airport, and have all those passengers just go to Eppley via a high rail or other forms of public transport, to add additional flights and revenue for Eppley?

Since most people that fly LNK have to transfer anyway and some flights are not doing as well financially.

I think most of the regular flights they have are doing fine. Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Houston, Vegas, Nashville, Orlando, Tampa, Phoenix are all pretty standard flight options and its really just this new unwarranted run of flights that failed miserably.

Nvm, LNK has a respectable list of destination options doing well, plus not having the airport as is would, reduce business and growth of the city. We don't want that, we want Omaha and Lincoln to be strong cities.

LNK is surviving mainly by leasing land to warehousing and manufacturing. Passenger numbers are stagnating around 150-200K per year. In the unlikely event that passenger service suddenly vanished the city of Lincoln would be fine. Ann Arbor, Michigan, has no scheduled passenger service. It's marginally closer to the Detroit airport. Lincoln is within an hour of Omaha's airport. Ann Arbor is growing faster than Lincoln.

I simply don't see passenger service leaving Lincoln.

Ann Harbor is a much smaller city at ~122k and Lincoln at ~289k. Smaller cities tend to have a larger percentage growth during the beginning. Plus a majority of migrants are from the Detroit metro

Lincoln has a much better climate, way more sunny days and the comfortably climate index is much higher than Ann Harbor.

Lincoln along with Omaha both top many stats. The same cannot be said about the Detroit metro that has been on the decline for many decades now, though they are starting to repair some of the problems. Detroit has to do something with the corruption in their city government, its run like a mafia.

Commercially? About 9. United has 3 flights a day to both Denver and Chicago and One to Houston (all on regional jets). And Red Way has about 2 to 3 on average to their various destinations.

Lincoln to Epply as an hour's drive, is very optimistic for most of the residents of Lincoln.

Ann Arbor metro is 372,000. Lincoln metro is 342,000.
Climate wise, they are somewhat similar but I've lived in suburban Detroit for just over 15 years and have been to Ann Arbor a lot. I tell people here that Omaha (and Lincoln) weather is Michigan weather on steroids. Hotter & more humid in the summer and colder, snowier & windier in the winter. I've never experienced the oppressive heat and humidity and the brutal winters in Michigan that I had in Nebraska. That's my experience.

Ann Arbor tops many more stats than Lincoln. I can't believe I'm defending Michigan as most of the time I have to defend Nebraska to people here. I won't even begin to compare the University of Michigan with UNL. Finally, as for Detroit, yes many problems and many of those are improving. Downtown Detroit is completely different than when we moved here. In a good way. METRO Detroit hasn''t been declining. Still over 4 million and a lot more stores, food, entertainment, sports than Nebraska.

Ann Harbor?

This is something I don't understand. Yes, more or less an hour drive from Lincoln to Eppley. On the other hand, Eppley has about 30 non stop destinations. Thus for example, if you want to go to New York from LNK you have to connect. At least an hour layover if not more, not to mention missing a connection. From OMA you get on the plane and you get off in New York. How is a layover better than non stop? Not to mention the fact that in many cases much more frequency from OMA to Chicago, Denver & Houston than LNK as well as the rest of the non stop destinations from OMA.

Here is one reason.

If I live in Lincoln, I am much more likely to get someone to drop off and pick me up at the Lincoln Airport VS Omaha and do not pay for multiple days of parking.

My Brother lives in S Lincoln. S of Hwy 2. It takes him about 1:45 to get from the driveway to parked at Omaha
