Zavier Betts opens up on decision to withdraw from transfer portal, return to Nebraska

In the spring of 2022, Zavier Betts left Nebraska and ultimately entered the transfer portal in January 2023. He was part of a wave of portal entries in light of the coaching change in Lincoln as Matt Rhule came in. But just 12 days after entering the portal, Betts ended up withdrawing and will be a Cornhusker after all. he plans to suit up for the first time since 2021, and he said he didn’t have many doubts about coming back under the new regime.

Report: Details emerge from 'citation' which led to Nebraska assistant Bob Wager's resignation

After Bob Wager announced his decision to resign at Nebraska tight ends coach, more details emerged on the citations against him. The Omaha World-Herald’s Sam McKewon reported Wager received multiple citations from police early Wednesday morning.

Wager was pulled over by the Lincoln Police Dept. around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and received a citation on first offense of DUI with a suspected blood alcohol level of .15, according to the World-Herald — nearly twice the legal limit. Police also cited him for careless driving, possession of an open alcohol container in the vehicle and refusing a chemical and preliminary test. As of publication, Wager hadn’t yet been formally charged.

Wager announced his resignation Friday in light of the situation. He released a statement Friday night about the decision and Nebraska said Josh Martin will move up to tight ends coach as a result. Martin was on the staff as a special teams analyst.

Unfortunate, hope he gets the help he needs.

Suspended Nebraska starter Myles Farmer enters NCAA transfer portal

Nebraska defensive back Myles Farmer has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz. Farmer was recently suspended from the team. A junior in 2023, Farmer started 11 games for the Cornhuskers in 2022. He finished second on the team with 73 tackles, a career high. With the suspension, Farmer wasn’t listed on Nebraska’s 120-man fall camp roster. Head coach Matt Rhule explained the suspension briefly.

Rhule sees the Big Ten's expansion as a positive for Nebraska

When Nebraska joined the Big Ten conference in 2011, they were the 12th league member. With Friday’s expansion adding Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten, the conference will have 18 members by 2024. Once dubbed the “San Diego of the Big Ten,” NU suddenly finds itself smack dab in the middle of a conference that stretches though all four time zones. As head coach Matt Rhule looks at the move, he only sees it as a positive for the long run.

Amazing how The Hukers have gone from the most Easterly team in the B1G to the team that is now basically the geographic center of the conference.

I am really excited for the new additions. All 4 teams will be fun for football. Washington especially for volleyball but the others will be fun too. UCLA and Pauley Pavilion big time for basketball. This also upgrades Big 10 baseball. Hopefully conference baseball season starts on the west coast every season.

Sims named to Davey O’Brien Award watch list

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Jeff Sims was one of 35 quarterbacks nationally named to the Davey O’Brien Award preseason watch list, announced on Tuesday, Aug. 8. The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback. Sims is in his first season at Nebraska in 2023 after spending three years at Georgia Tech. Sims started 23 games for the Yellow Jackets and completed 57.5 percent of his passes for 4,464 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,152 yards and 11 scores. Sims enters the 2023 season as one of 14 active FBS quarterbacks with 4,000 career passing yards and 1,000 career rushing yards.

Last season, Sims threw for 1,115 yards and five touchdowns in seven starts while rushing for 288 yards. In 2021, Sims started six games and passed for 1,468 yards and 21 touchdowns with 372 rushing yards. As a freshman in 2020, Sims started 10 games and accumulated 1,881 passing yards, 492 rushing yards and 19 total touchdowns.

No easy games to start out this year. These first 2 games are big. The Minnesota game is huge. And Nebraska should be hungry to beat Colorado after the embarrassing losses we had with them during the Frost era.

Nebraska football WR Zavier Betts parts ways with Matt Rhule & Nebraska Huskers program

WR Zavier Betts moves on from Nebraska football program

Wide receiver Zavier Betts has moved on from the Nebraska football program. NU head coach Matt Rhule confirmed on Saturday that Betts left the team this week. The news of Betts’ departure comes as a surprise, as he rejoined the program in January after initially leaving in the spring of 2021. Betts returned to the team after entering the transfer portal for less than a week in January.

Husker coach 'caught by surprise' as Bellevue native quits two weeks before first game

LINCOLN, Neb. — Husker Coach Matt Rhule said he was "caught by surprise" when Zavier Betts quit the team. He said the Bellevue native came to him saying his "heart's not in it." This happens just a little over two weeks before the Huskers kick off the 2023/24 season against Minnesota on Aug. 31. Rhule is "disappointed in the timing," but said he understands.

Nice time to quit right before the season starts. College footballs becoming a merry go round anymore can hardly keep track of who's coming or going.

I'm glad these are just for one game. At first I feared it was for the season. Adidas and the Huskers getting desperate. I really think they need to leave the past in the past. The only alternate uniform that ever looked good was the 2016 whites IMO. It was the closest Nebraska ever came to new and exciting, outside the box.

Blah! These are hardly alternates. Frankly, I prefer the practice uniforms without the unflattering pant stripes, a la the 1995-2003 look.

Three More Huskers Earn Coveted Single-Digit Jerseys
Only three numbers remain for the first year of the new tradition

More Nebraska football players have taken their place within the new tradition. Under head coach Matt Rhule, players must earn the single-digit jerseys. Rhule said earlier this year that those jerseys go to the "toughest guys on the team". The new additions are defensive lineman Nash Hutmacher with No. 0, linebacker Nick Henrich with No. 3, and linebacker John Bullock with No. 5.

Really excited, mainly to see what Jeff Sims can do and just a totally fresh start overall. I wasn't going to, but last second decided to take the night off for the first game, which don't forget, is on THURSDAY August 31st 7:00 pm at Minnesota on FOX. I couldn't miss the first game of the new team...

Its a tough way to start but I've always felt that week 1 conference games are an equalizer. Both teams are going to be rusty. So I think the Huskers stand a pretty good chance at winning this game. If they do so, it'll be the first week 1 win since 2019 :barf: in an overall 8 year string of week 1 string of disappointingly close wins, close losses, or losses to teams they should be beating handily. Hope that changes this year.

13 days!

Huskers week 1 depth chart has been posted
https://www.huskermax.com/nebraska-foot ... pth-chart/

#1 thing I saw that makes me look forward to the future is that Freshman from Westside, Tristan Alvano beat Junior, Timmy Bleekrode. So HOPEFULLY that means kicker won't be a position of liability for the next 3-4 years, as it has been during these dark years. No other real surprises I could see. Everybody pretty much where I'd expect. Just hope Jeff Sims doesn't get injured. But still don't know what to expect with him either. But I know we don't want Purdy out there. Sims is just such an athlete that I have high hopes for him, even though his stats at Georgia Tech are nothing special.

He wasn't a starter because he was not eligible to play. It was his second transfer, and he needed a waiver from the NCAA because of the second transfer. Had not gotten this yet. All kinds of potential and likly NFL talent. Came with some baggage but nothing like this event.

Gilbert, a sophomore from Marietta, Georgia, was a five-star recruit who was the top-ranked tight end prospect and 2019 Gatorade National Player of the Year.

He initially played at LSU, where he started eight games in 2020 and was named to the All-SEC freshman team after catching 35 passes for 368 yards. He transferred to Georgia and sat out the 2021 season. He played in three games for the Bulldogs last season, catching two passes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule, without elaborating, said Gilbert has been working through some life issues.

Seems like every few weeks we are getting a big surprise from Husker football. This week it's Arik Gilbert's possible (you watch the video and decide ) felony burglary. A few weeks ago it was an assistant coach getting a DUI and booted from the team and also a few weeks back Zavier Betts suddenly decides to quit football again.

This program needs to go at least the next month without any more drama. Or it could be a long ugly season. I would have to say I am somewhat disappointed in what's transpired lately with this program. Hopefully Trev Alberts has taken some notes.

Eh, weird stuff happens all the time. A team is a team, but it'd be impossible to keep a hold on 100% of the players 100% of the time. The best medicine is a win tomorrow.

Speaking of which, there's been no talk about the first game of the season. Not here, not at work, not in public, not with friends. There's just no excitement. You'd hardly know the first game is tomorrow. The Huskers have just flat out been that bad in recent years, there's just no buzz.

That said, I believe Minnesota is a winnable game. I really think it'll be a close one and I'll throw my prediction out there. I think it'll be a 3-point swing that could go either way. Unfortunately both my head and my heart predict a husker loss.

Minnesota 27-24. Hope I'm wrong.
