South across 370 was going to be Metro Community College. Haven't seen if that has started.

Though construction is nearly complete, the 700,000-square-foot Amazon distribution center in Sarpy County has run into problems, and its opening will be delayed, likely until 2024. A City of Papillion spokesman told the Nebraska Examiner on Tuesday that “supply chain issues” botched the online retail giant’s plan to open this year. The sprawling complex was to employ 1,000 people. “We still have a positive mindset,” Trenton Albers said, adding that a supply chain setback could be viewed as a “sign of the times.” Amazon’s project was described by area business officials in 2020 as that year’s largest economic development coup in seven counties surrounding Omaha. It is to feature robots working alongside humans, preparing items for delivery to front porches.

$203 million economic impact

Greater Omaha Chamber leaders said at the time that they expected the operation to have a $203 million annual economic impact in the metro area. Papillion officials have talked to Amazon officials and are optimistic the center will still open, even if delayed, Albers said. He said Amazon still was working on the complex, including continuing the approval process of installing a sprinkler system. Meanwhile, news media in multiple other cities where Amazon warehouses were in the pipeline have reported delays or cancellations to warehouse plans.

A report last month in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, for example, said a plan for a last-mile Amazon distribution center poised for Georgia’s DeKalb County was dropped. The developer offered no details on what happened. A Quad Cities-area ABC affiliate reported in May that Amazon confirmed a two-year delay in opening a distribution center in Davenport, Iowa. The Amazon spokeswoman did not give specific reasons, but a Chamber official there told the TV station that “supply chain issues” were involved. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader in South Dakota reported last month that Amazon officials pushed back the target date for a Sioux Falls fulfillment center, also to 2024. Modern Shipper, which covers the supply chain that supports e-commerce, reported recently that 16 planned Amazon warehouses have been canceled or delayed in 2022. It noted that Amazon reported a $3.8 billion net loss in the first quarter of 2022, compared to the $8.1 billion profit a year earlier.

Code name ‘Willa’

Building officials in Papillion said construction on the Amazon distribution center was almost done. Plans also included about 1,800 car parking stalls, trailer spaces and bike racks. Amazon declined to offer a price tag for the venture when Gov. Pete Ricketts and Papillion Mayor David Black joined others in late 2020 to announce the project details via a virtual press conference. But the land alone, 94 acres northeast of the intersection of Nebraska Highways 370 and 50, was sold to an Amazon affiliate for $12.3 million. The Amazon plan had moved through the Papillion Planning Board approval process under the code name Willa. Amazon has a smaller fulfillment center elsewhere in Papillion that is staffed and operational. Albers reported no change to that plant at this time.

Not surprised. After you hear the subcontractors on the project talk about when they were told it was opening and see those rough deadlines come and go several times you begin to realize the project is being purposefully delayed.

Are there no pillars inside the structures? They are closing down mostly older warehouses, which I'm sure are aren't as good of a layout for their needs.

I am sure there are pillars, but if you used it for training and youth development and then used the pitch for games, it could be useful.

A new owner could probably put some refrigeration units on the roof and use it for cold storage.

A new Amazon fulfillment center opens in Papillion and promises to create 1,000 jobs. According to Amazon, the new facility located at the intersection of NE-50 and NE-370 is the first Amazon fulfillment center in Nebraska.

The fulfillment center is Amazon’s fifth operational location in the Omaha area. The company says they already have more than 1,000 employees in the area across all locations. Amazon claims the fulfillment center will eventually have 1,000 employees by itself, and already has roughly 300.

PAPILLION — Nebraska’s first and massive Amazon “fulfillment center” has opened in this Omaha metro area suburb, initially employing about 300 (not including robots that are to work alongside the humans). The opening this week came later than the originally projected 2022 date, but sooner than the 2024 date that officials last year said was more likely due to “supply chain issues.”

Rescheduled launch unexplained

When asked about the timing changeup, Amazon spokesman Andy DiOrio said, “We’re always evaluating our network to ensure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees, customers, partners and drivers.” The retail giant did not elaborate on why the facility had grown from its original planned size of 700,000 square feet to more than 1 million square feet. As has been typical, Amazon officials did not specify the investment or price tag but said their venture comes in response to customer demand. It is the first fulfillment center in the state, and will serve the Midwest region. The plant northeast of Nebraska Highways 370 and 50 is expected to create “at least 1,000 good jobs to maximize its capacity,” an Amazon statement said. Hiring continues for positions that start at $16.50 an hour, with benefits starting the first day. “To open Amazon’s first sortable fulfillment center in Nebraska is a milestone moment and we look forward to further supporting customers in Papillion, Omaha and surrounding communities,” said site leader Aaron Schmidt.

Economic development coup

Papillion Mayor David Black said Tuesday that his community was excited to have the employment center in the region — “not to mention another top Fortune 500 company to call Papillion home.” No City of Papillion tax breaks or incentives were involved, according to a spokesman. The State of Nebraska’s contribution was not immediately available.nWhen Amazon and Nebraska officials first announced the project via a virtual press conference in 2020, local business leaders described it as that year’s largest economic development coup in a seven-county area surrounding Omaha. Greater Omaha Chamber leaders said then that they expected the operation to have a $203 million annual economic impact in the metro area. Once fully operational, Amazon says the new Papillion center will be able to contain millions of products. It is the type of plant where employees pick, pack and ship customer orders such as books, toys and housewares. Robots are to work alongside humans, preparing items for delivery to front porches. The Amazon Robotics technology creates “a more efficient process to meet customer demand,” Amazon said in a statement.

You’ve seen the delivery trucks, but have you ever wondered how your Amazon packages get to your home behind the scenes? 6 News got a look inside the new Amazon Fulfillment Center in Papillion today. 14 1/2 miles of conveyer belts and 4,500 robots are what create “the Amazon magic,” according to manager Aaron Schmidt. “The robots that help bring the products to people really cut down the time you’re walking around the building throughout every day to what it takes to package the unit,” Schmidt said.

The fulfillment center is equipped with up-to-date technology that Schmidt said has evolved over time. “The robots can carry over a thousand pounds on them, the pod, the shelving, and all the inventory inside,” Schmidt said. He described the design of the workflow with the equipment and machines as being hands-free to facilitate the jobs of employees and speed up the process of getting items in and shipping them out. “It’s nicer for things to be brought to me than me walking all around the building to go get those things,” Schmidt said.

Amazon Fulfillment Center brings money, jobs, and robots to Papillion-La Vista community



PAPILLION, Neb. — It's the first of its kind within Nebraska, with more than a million square feet of people and robots packaging orders to ship across the country. Gov. Jim Pillen got a look inside the success at Amazon's fulfillment center in Papillion.

The article also mentioned that the building is only operating at 1/2 capacity, so there is plenty of more room to grow.

Looks like Amazon is set to start their "Prime Air" drone delivery service out of their Papillion warehouse location later this summer. 7.5 Mi radius, packages less than 5 pounds, nothing fragile, as the package is actually released from ~10 ft high (drone never lands)....

It's interesting that as the negative comments started rolling in on Papillion's social media accounts, Mayor Black was quick to point out the approval happened at the federal level -- it's an FAA decision that the cities and counties impacted have little to no jurisdiction over.

I'm not exactly thrilled about five-foot tall drones flying over my neighborhood and dropping packages from 12 feet up in the air. But it is what it is. Progress, I guess
