Re: Crime in Omaha
Sad to hear the news that former U.S. Senator Martha McSally was criminally assaulted while jogging from the Bob Kerry bridge to the Council Bluffs riverfront trail in Hanafan Park earlier this week. Fortunately surveillance cams captured the image of the perpetrator and he was arrested a couple of days later. He’s apparently a homeless man with mental issues. The story made the national news. Fortunately so did the fact that the guy had been arrested. McSally was effusive in her praise of both the Omaha and Council Bluffs police departments for quickly working to apprehend the guy.
McSally is a former Air Force fighter pilot and was a previous sexual assault victim during her time in the military. Due to her grit and physical conditioning she was able to fight off the guy. Others might not have been so fortunate.

This sounds like a trauma she had to deal with again, especially being a victim in the past. Can't believe she was a former Arizona Senator and she was assaulted on her visit here.nativeomahan wrote: Sat Nov 11, 2023 2:38 pm Sad to hear the news that former U.S. Senator Martha McSally was criminally assaulted while jogging from the Bob Kerry bridge to the Council Bluffs riverfront trail in Hanafan Park earlier this week. On a side note, It looks like KC is also taking precautions by having armed police in stores.

Re: Crime in Omaha
Why even have separate courts if a 14 year old is going to be tried as an adult?
This crime is horrible and heinous. Still, generally we've agreed as a society that children do not have the same executive function as adults. Because of this they are less culpable than adults. If our juvenile justice system is failing to rehabilitate kids while protecting society we should fix our justice system because there will always be another round of kids to commit crimes.

I think there was some talk recently on crime in the Capital District. Stabbing there on December 10/11:

Does anyone know why the Capitol District is a hotbed for violent crime? I know it’s a bar area but so are other areas of Omaha and they don’t have as constant shootings/stabbings. One of my friends was going to apply to be a security guard at the Capitol District and I persuaded him not to.Greg S wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2023 4:06 pm I think there was some talk recently on crime in the Capital District. For your side note, Omaha is right with KC on this. Baker's at 132nd and Maple had this in place for a while (since they had the issue with carjacking in their parking lot). Hy Vee has done this for a while too.Renovator2559 wrote: Sun Nov 12, 2023 10:06 pmThis sounds like a trauma she had to deal with again, especially being a victim in the past. Omaha only had 28 murders this past year and Omaha police boasts a homicide clear rate of 100% for the first time.

I think the deserved raises for the Omaha police are also motivating.

Re: Crime in Omaha
I just want to say the number of homicides probably isn't correlated with police presence or non-presence. It's an eb and flow.
However, maybe I'm playing devils advocate in this new society, but police LARGELY are not the problem. Yeah I get it, nobody likes the police. Nobody wants to deal with em, but if you're dealing with em, ya likely done f*ked up some how.
They may be here to serve and protect, but also to keep society in check. Like any hall monitor, security guard, Walmart greeter. We need these positions or everyone will go wild and do whatever they want.

Omaha had an amazing year, apparently. I don't know if it was a fluke, or to stay. This puts us in line with some major cities that are safer than most of our peers.

Another Westside High student involved in major crime. The city's first homicide of 2024, at the Casey's on 72nd, has been connected to a 16 year old student from Westside.

All had two legs, most had two arms. Height was varied between 4'3" and 6'4". One had a peg leg, and I believe there was a potbelly pig involved that ran off when the fuzz showed up.Renovator2559 wrote: Thu Mar 14, 2024 7:52 pmI couldn't find any pictures of the instigators, how did they look like?

Re: Crime in Omaha
Issues with youths cropping up at Leahy Mall again:
From the weekend:
Omaha Police Officers Association
·
Last weekend, our officers had to use pepper-balls to break up several large fights involving unaccompanied minors at Gene Leahy Park, right in the heart of downtown Omaha. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured due to the quick response of our officers and security.
To all the parents out there, please keep a close eye on your kids and avoid leaving them at the park without supervision. As the weather gets nicer, we fear this problem will only worsen.
To the businesses, residents, and visitors of the Old Market, we have your back. Everyone should be able to enjoy this Omaha amenity without the fear of becoming a victim of crime.
Our police resources are already spread thin and are constantly being diverted to address fights at the park. Our juvenile laws prevent us from detaining minors for "minor" offenses, which threatens the peace and safety of our community.
What are your thoughts? How can we address this issue together? Should entertainment districts in Omaha have a curfew for unaccompanied minors? We want to know your ideas.

Re: Crime in Omaha
And from last night:
Last night, we reported on a series of fights at Gene Leahy Mall involving groups of unaccompanied juveniles. Less than two hours after our initial post, another fight at the park broke out involving around 50 minors. During this melee, a Good Samaritan was attacked and assaulted. A 13-year-old was “arrested” for assault and providing false information, then immediatley released on the spot to a guardian.
Just a few hours later, the same young individual was caught after a car chase in a stolen vehicle. Two teenagers attempted to flee on foot, but were apprehended following a brief pursuit. Once again, the 13-year-old was detained and subsequently released into the custody of his guardian.
Two victims within hours of each other involving a 13 year old suspect.
We must address the issue of repeat juvenile offenses that currently face little to no consequences. We need change. Call your state senator, county commissioners, city council members, and demand action!

In February was on a walk on a Sunday night about 9pm, walking by those jungle gym things by the luminarium and a group of young adults or juveniles, idk, I couldn't see them, were saying things like keep walking, and other things. I wasn't listening because I knew they were just a bunch of young dorks. I wasn't intimidated, I just continued along my walk, but still, thats just unnecessary. I don't know who these kids think they are, and I don't know how to fix it other than ignore them. Someone must be out there entertaining them or there'd be no reason for them to attempt territorial intimidation tactics.

Yeah this type of thing can not be allowed to continue. The more reports of things like this (and people seeing it when downtown) the more it will keep the people from visiting the park.

They also mentioned that several of them were gang members, possesed drugs, marijuana, alcohol and fire arms.
This is from the Sheriff's Office:
"None of the individuals encountered during this incident were residents of Sarpy County, and many had known gang affiliations," the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
