LIST: Top 5 NEW Quarterbacks in the Big Ten
The college football season is less than 100 days away and it is hard to say who the top Big Ten quarterback is right now. However, we boldly state who the top 5 incoming conference quarterbacks will be. They are arriving via the portal, recruitment, and Big Ten expansion. They all hope to shake up the pecking order in college football.
HARBAUGH UGH!
Meanwhile, Jim Harbaugh continues to poach the Michigan athletic department and lure former employees to southern California to join him in the sun with the Los Angeles Chargers. The body count is up to 9 people. That is pretty significant. Meanwhile Sherrone Moore is adding numerous personnel to the recruiting staff in Ann Arbor.
SOCAL
UCLA football coach DeShaun Foster is trying to bring back forgotten traditions to Westwood. Tune in here to find out which ones. Certainly he remembers how glorious things were when he played at UCLA. But times have changed and he wants that old fashioned enthusiasm back in the Rose Bowl.
Speaking of Southern California we have some transfer portal news from the USC Trojans as they have added a new receiver. And the good news is he is from California.
PORTAL POWER RANKINGS
Finally, we take a look at the top transfer portal schools now that spring football is over. Some late additions may tilt the scales. See where a couple of Big Ten schools rank in our weekly Power Rankings on Locked on Big Ten with Craig Shemon.

Nebraska Athletics Shooting for the Stars;
Penn State Lawsuit Verdict!
Nebraska Huskers Athletics are on the rise! Matt Rhule and his Husker football team and quarterback Dylan Raiola are about to surprise a lot of people in college football. Meanwhile the Nebraska baseball team is in the NCAA regionals. The basketball teams made the NCAA tournament and the volleyball team is one of the best in college athletics. All of this success makes us wonder why Trev Alberts would step down as the Nebraska athletic director to take the same job at Texas A&M. We explore that decision here.
JURY HAS SPOKEN
Speaking of decisions, the jury is in for the wrongful termination lawsuit against Penn State. Former Penn State football team doctor Scott Lynch says football coach James Franklin meddled in his medical decisions involving college football players on the team and that friction between the two cost him his job. A jury agreed with Dr. Lynch. Find out how much the award was right here on Locked on Big 10.
HOOPS INJURY UPDATE
Also, we have an update from Indiana basketball coach Mike Woodson on Trey Galloway, who just had knee surgery. He could be out a bit longer. But will it effect his availability for the start of the Hoosiers upcoming hoops season?

Guest Scott Dochterman on Big Ten football Fridays,
the TV draft and the Iowa Hawkeyes
Scott Dochterman of The Athletic visits the pod to answer our questions about the avalanche of kickoff times and TV announcements that were released on Thursday. Nebraska knows when it's going to play each of its first five games. And Black Friday in Iowa City is set for 6:30 p.m. on NBC. How did this all come about? Scott knows some of the fascinating stories from the TV network draft. Also, we discuss Iowa's new quarterback and finish with a story about Kirk Ferentz's ride to the airport.

Re: Big 10 Conference
Big Ten and SEC Super Conference Already Happening
The Big Ten and SEC will officially form a college football Super Conference before you know it. In fact, we will argue it is already happening in college football. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said something very curious about Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti as recently as last week at the SEC meetings which proves our point; the Super Conference is here.
PREFER SUPER CONFERENCE?
By the way, do you prefer "Super Conference", "Super-Conference" or "SuperConference?" Let us know. Nevertheless, college football has reached a point where the Big Ten and SEC need to bully their way toward their best interests. And that is exactly what they are doing!
The Ohio State Buckeyes football team just got a sweet new locker room for this season. We will try to explain their out-of-this-world recruiting tool.
CBS TV
CBS has announced its college football schedule and it is loaded with Big Ten action. But while we were looking over college football schedules we noticed the Big Ten designated its Homecoming games coming up. Tune in to find out how Nebraska football is getting picked on. They are not everybody's Homecoming game, but almost.
TOP TEN
Finally, we come out of the weekend with our Top Ten Big Ten observations. Here's a hint: The list comes from the NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament as three Big Ten teams made the show.

Top 5 Big Ten Football Dark Horses in 2024
Other than Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State who are some Big Ten Football Dark Horses who could win the Conference this season? We came up with a list of 5 teams to discuss. Surely this will create a lot of college football debate.
OSU, UO, PSU… VS EVERYBODY ELSE?
Locked on Big 10 is on the record with Ohio State and Oregon as our picks to be in the Big Ten Championship. And we spent a great deal of time in yesterday's podcast talking about how Penn State is probably a college football playoff team. So what about the rest? We will explain each team's chances on our list. And it is only June!
HE IS A GIANT
Also, the recruiting wars are on! Nebraska coach Matt Rule just offered a full ride to a 6 foot 7 inch giant who has not played organized football in two years! Plus he added a running back to possibly run behind him. And Greg Schiano is killing it in Piscataway! During this past recruiting weekend he closed 10 kids to commit on the spot! This brings his recruiting class to 18 kids. Not only that, but all 18 are 3-star players. That is a strong weekend of work.
TV TIME!
We also learned the actual kickoff times and TV networks for the newly expanded college football playoffs. If you are on the east coast you will love the kickoff times, especially for the college football national championship.

From the Memorial Stadium thread...
1620 started speculating that with this gift, KU my be trying to join the Big 10.
Same donor also already had his name on the stadium so this wasn't his first gift. Also, $300 Million is now the single largest donation in college athletics.remline wrote: Wed Aug 13, 2025 9:49 am This gives us a feel for the cost involved in college stadium renovation projects. Somehow, getting the money never seems to be an issue. A single donor just gave KU $300 milliion!

Merge everything, call it the Big 64™, and have HAL 9000 do the scheduling. Shoot, we're almost there now. ESPN and NFL, Inc. are the winners.

Re: Big 10 Conference
In all honesty, thats what it should be at this point. College football left behind what it was quite some time ago. No longer playing for the honor of it. I do think the players should rightfully be allowed to make whatever bag they can, but I think its past time for the bigs to stop selling it like its still "college football". Go all in, merge everything, make it "boring" (it already is if you ask me), structure it like the NFL and call it good. With an in-season tournament structure, that guarantees E V E R Y game matters.damonhynes wrote: Thu Aug 14, 2025 8:17 am Merge everything, call it the Big 64™, and have HAL 9000 do the scheduling. That said, I'm still excited to catch every Husker game I can. The season is creeping up on us quickly. I honestly didn't even see it around the corner.

I mean that the season is the tournament. Every one of the 12 games or so is part of a 64 (or so) team bracket. The NFL operates this way. There's then no question what the seedings should be. Record and tie breakers. Not what some committee "feels" the seeding should be.CBJason wrote: Thu Aug 14, 2025 4:15 pmFootball doesn’t need in season tournamentsBusguy2010 wrote: Thu Aug 14, 2025 2:04 pm. Re: Big 10 Conference
Split the college teams into four groups. Every team within a conference plays each other once. Whoever comes out on top of each conference at the end of the season, punches a ticket to a 4-team playoff. Fair and square. The argument is settled on the field, every single game, meaning every game is a defacto championship game.

Re: Big 10 Conference
This is a pretty solid idea! My favorite thing about old-time college football was that, to win a national championship, every game was crucial. With the ever-expanding playoff, college football has lost a large part of what made it so unique.Busguy2010 wrote: Thu Aug 14, 2025 5:37 pm Split the college teams into four groups. Re: Big 10 Conference
Just for fun, I thought through what a conference could look like. I think more likely there would be Southeast, Midwest, Northeast, and West conferences, or something like that. Probably 16 teams each, making for 64. Though there's debatability whether there's 64 worthy teams, 60, or 56.
Let's say 60, meaning each conference has 15 teams. Each team then will play 14 regular season games (sounds reasonable enough to me), and if they make it, a semifinal game, and a national championship game.
For the sake of keeping it Nebraska related, I picked the other 14 teams for the hypothetical conference based on distance from Lincoln, for our convenience, of course lol.
So this conference would be -
Nebraska
Iowa State
Kansas State
Kansas
Missouri
Iowa
Minnesota
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma
Arkansas
Wisconsin
Northwestern
Illinois
Colorado
And you can leave it up for debate, do you want Notre Dame, or SMU?
I only want Colorado for the rivalry, as they feel more like a West team.

I'm thinking more based on drive time. The Colorado cities are farther away than Arkansas, but I get how it feels more like a southeastern team. But we gotta have that Colorado game, right?
Anyway, Arkansas is as close as Oklahoma, and im not sure Air Force or Colorado State make the 60 or 64 team cut.

I've said before that the big winners (besides the NFL, and ESPN) with coast-to-coast conferences are American, Delta and United. They won't allow regional conferences without a fight.Busguy2010 wrote: Fri Aug 15, 2025 1:05 pm Just for fun, I thought through what a conference could look like. Big Ten floating idea for 24- or 28-team CFP, sources say.
I think we can probably go ahead and cancel the regular season. Everyone deserves to be in the playoff… (as long as they have enough money). The Big Ten has considered an idea of a massive expansion of the College Football Playoff that would grow the postseason to 24 or 28 teams, sources told ESPN.

Re: Big 10 Conference
That's just incredibly stupid. Like you said, cancel the regular season then. That bracket would take like a month and a half to complete, and would make for absolutely pointless 1 v 7 or 1 v 14, or whatever matchups. Regardless, even if a higer seed gets lucky and wins a game, they'll probably get bounced in the second round. They shouldn't strive for a Cinderella story for college football, it totally disembodies the work of the regular season.remline wrote: Sat Aug 16, 2025 12:22 pm Big Ten floating idea for 24- or 28-team CFP, sources say.

They need to do away with this nonsense, not add to it. College football has become a circus show already, and they want to make it more of one? Pass, pass, pass. Ill probably even quit watching Husker games if they do that.

The Michigan head coach getting fired and now facing charges for stalking and other crimes is another reason College Football has become a joke. This was always a strange hire. I looked at this guys job resume and in my opinion he was under qualified to become the head coach of a team of Michigan’s prestige and position in college football history. Time to find another coach, choose wisely.

Well that does it! Undefeated Indiana wins their first Natty, making it 3 in a row for the Big10! They also become only the second school ever to have undefeated national champs in football and basketball (UCLA…now also a BIG10 school). I guess it just means more…in the BIG10

I always find it silly and cringey when athletes thank god when they win, but other than that, I'm really happy for Hoosiers. My spouse is from Indiana so I know a lot of them by association. They deserve that title, but next year will be interesting when they were stacked with so many seniors this year.
Mendoza likely going to the Raiders or the Jets and we'll just have to wait and see how that pans out. Elite college QBs don't regularly move on to elite pro players.
