John Brown with KMTV Channel 3 is looking for residents of Gretna that want to speak on camera about Gretna not having its own police department.
I've been in Gretna for 10+ years and just realized that we do not have a police department. If anything, we should have a full-time fire crew. The sheriffs department has plenty of time on their hands as they love the school zone speed traps*.
*I would fine with the lower speed if it was consistent and the signs were readable. Right now the signs list different times for three different days in small print.
I was talking to some older guys over the weekend. Gretna actually had its own police department up until the early 1980s at which point they switched to paying the Sarpy County Sheriff's department to do the policing. In fact, one of the parks in Gretna is named after the former Gretna Police Chief, Leo Royal.
So, the concept of Gretna having its own police department isn't new. It's a reimplementation of something that was already in place 40+ years ago when Gretna's population was 1,500± people. Unfortunately, Now that there's renewed interest, it's the start-up costs that has everyone choking. I believe Angie Lauritsen mentioned $6M. Though, Gretna passed a $258M school bond in 2020 without much of a struggle. So, if Gretna voters will so quickly rubber-stamp $258M for schools why not $6M for police?
Perhaps Rod Yates can roll it into his $5 billion NEX expansion? I mean that's like 100 new police departments.
I live just on the outskirts of Gretna. I assume the sirens I hear are their summons for volunteer fire fighters? I've always wondered why someone would sign up to volunteer for this when the community down the street pays their fire fighters. I assume the reason they can make volunteering work is due to the size of the area and frequency (or infrequency) of calls?
Schwan's (Yelloh) closed their distribution based on Gretna a few months back. I believe it was the last in this region, and they are completely gone from the area.
The question I have is, does anyone know what is going into this building? I have noticed that there has been some activity there the last couple of weeks that looks like construction. With the renovation and freezer space that this building has, along with the dock, it is somewhat specked without a complete makeover.
Trying to find something that would hint at what is going on there has led me to nothing. When the closing was announced, there was a post on FB looking for a contact to try to get ahold of who owned and was going to sell the business. I did a little digging at that time and the person asking was connected to a catering and meats business out of Columbus. It looked like this building could have fit what they were doing, and now that there is activity there, I am trying to see if it ties to them.
Maybe it is still just demo but it looks like it could be more than that.

I see Azria Health in Gretna, formerly Gretna Community Living Center, is now The Willows at Gretna.
I saw that sign change a while back. I wondered, but I never got around to looking, if that was just a name change or an ownership change.
I did a bit of lazy googling but couldn't determine who owns it now. Azria's page on their site for the place is stale and the Facebook page shows them changing the logo, but not mention of the official name change or any new ownership. So....

There's a "coming soon" sign up where Cookie Co used to be (11922 Standing Stone Dr) for Cinnaholic (gourmet vegan cinnamon rolls).

Since there seems to be a shortage of banks around Gretna, it looks like another is coming. Dayspring Bank is going into the former Juice stop location. Signs have been on the building for a couple of weeks or so, but there looks to be a lot to do yet.
11910 Standing Stone Drive, Suite 101
It looks like they have seven locations currently across Nebraska

PING: One of you wonks that know how to look at Sarpy property parcel ownership: Heard from my brother who lives in Echo Hills that the Mackey Elevator on Chandler close to Chalco has been sold. I did not hear who bought it, and for the life of me, I don't know the intended development purpose. Any ideas?
It looks like Mackey Elevator sold it in September 2021 to "GONZALEZ OSCAR JOEL COLMENARES" for $350K.
Apparently the owners of the property are also behind Azteca Restaurant up at NE-50 and I-80. My brother's been up to Azteca and has discussed it with the staff there.

I saw in the Grow Omaha email newsletter that Cinnaholic will finally be opening in Gretna on 9/20/2024. I was wondering what the delay way. They finished construction quite awhile ago. I was a little worried something fell through.

Actually, I don't think they finished all that long ago. There seemed to me to be a long pause when they were well along. I drive by daily and many times more than once a day. I noticed that things seemed to stop, so I started to pay attention. One tell for me was a large step ladder that sat inside the front window kind of in the middle of no where. I watched this not move for at least five weeks as an indicator that nothing was going on. Once it final was moved things started happening again and then shortly the opening date was announced.

Do we know what's being built at 168th and 370? Boxy drive thru, I'm guessing Starbucks, but wasn't sure.
Yes, Starbucks. Basically across 168th From Scooters

Whew... was worried we wouldn't have enough coffee options along that stretch. Now if only they'd put in a standalone Starbucks near 192nd and 370 by the existing Scooters... Oh, wait

I guess as long as there are that many people happy to pay $$ for a cup of coffee our economy must be in pretty darn good shape.
lol
I think this about a lot of things.
Obviously, I concur with your coffee observation.
If pick-up trucks and full-size SUVs are still the preferred vehicle for so many people and I'm still 12 cars deep at a traffic light on Friday night, then gas must not cost too much yet.
If you're tossing out perfectly good modern appliances because they don't match the new aesthetic of your kitchen, then the economy must be pretty decent.
If you're still paying someone else to paint your nails, then you're not short on disposable income.

The Amigos in Gretna has closed.
Well that's a bummer - but TBH, I never went once. It's not quite close enough to make the drive unfortunately.
I wish something would go in near 180th & Giles, however I believe it's going to only be apartments on the SW corner and some Flex-Space on the NW corner (poor use of the land there, IMO). Not really sure how Flex-Space fits within residential on the 3 other corners/sides of this lot.
I looked up the rent for the Flex bays and I think they're wanting about $16-$18/sq ft. At 3000sq ft that's a monthly rent of $4000 not including other overhead/utilities just to store lawn or construction equipment.

I live about six blocks from there. The location stinks. It did when it was Runza and continues to. I went once in a while when it was Runza . I get why it started as a Runza when there were fewer options for exiting the building, and there were not a lot of free-standing buildings going on nearby for food. As other locations have been built this location has become even less desirable to get to and from.
I wonder how Jimmy Johns is doing across the parking lot from this location.

This is another place ruined by COVID and the years of under-staffing that followed. After the umpteenth time going there and not knowing if they'd be open I think a lot of people just removed it from their rotation. I don't think anyone even tried to eat inside anymore. Nobody wanted to park and get out of their car just to discover a locked door. I also don't think their morning breakfast menu and coffee products were very popular and certainly didn't justify the added expense of being open for breakfast. It had a steady business prior to COVID, but they managed to ruin it. Though, to be fair, there's more fast food competition in Gretna than there was when the Gretna Amigos first opened (7 years ago?).

Jimmie John's seems to have a steadier drive-thru clientele than Amigos did, but I think JJ's really lives off of its "freaky fast delivery."
Grow Omaha reported that D’Leon’s Taco Rico is going into the former Amigo's location in Gretna.
I have speculated that this space has already been leased since Amego moved out. I live close by and have never seen a For Lease or any type of available sign-up for this location.

We make an effort to provide excellent customer service and serve your order quickly. As a fast food restaurant we try to provide a place where people can dine, or use the drive through without waiting long lines. We are open Sunday-Thursday from 6 am to 3 am, and on Fridays and Saturdays we are open from 6 am to 4 am.

This will be a welcome addition. We have an Abelardo's on 168th, but that's a bit of a haul from old school Gretna. So, that D'Leon's will be convenient. Also, their food is pretty decent.

I like this addition, too. As much as I used to really like Amego's IMO, they have fallen off in the last few years.
I consider this an upgrade for that location. I'm guessing they will be busy.

Amigo's seems to have devolved to cheap college food I can make at home, like a hot dog wrapped in a tortilla.

Devolved?! Was it ever really more than that?? I mean, I've never walked into Amigo's thinking I'm getting something authentic.
