20 spots for a 50,000 sqft building? Like is this suppose to be princess parking for the doners? I need the thought process on necessity of this surface lot
You’re going to make merchants who sell here walk blocks with their goods?

I counted closer to 70 in the lot. Street side parking is also an option.
So is Orbit and the streetcar. And (gasp!) for downtown/Old Market area residents, walking.

I agree. The parking lot is not necessary. Lots of parking options nearby and the streetcar within walking distance.
They could easily double the market by developing the surface lot later.

I can see a lot of people trying to park here to access the skate rink or pork. This will take away spots from people trying to visit the market. Unless they plan on charging for parking. If you purchase something, they can validate the ticket to be free.
Let's not forget that they turned the Brickline parking garage into a monthly. It was interesting how I could no longer use that garage to park, I guess there objective now is to just serve their residents

That’s not true. If you enter from 8th street it’s hourly. The monthly is when you enter from Farnam.

Silly me, good to know, parking is as designed; compartmentalized.

As we celebrate the coming of our own indoor public market, the most historic one in Paris was destroyed in a fire last night.

My parents live there and I park all the time. Neither they nor I have ever heard of anyone having an issue.

My (baseless) theory is they never got the car counting system to work right, which would have tracked the number of open stalls. When the number of open stalls approached the number of residents not currently parked, then the garage could just show as "full". Or that would make sense to me. But then they never got the sensors working, so they just marked it as "monthly only" to ensure residents had enough spots.

I use the parking garage every day and the sign is there just to keep the garage available to “locals”

honestly the parking thing isn't as big of a deal to me, personally, because there have already been a lot of times we park up by GLM and then end up by the river anyway. We are always looking for stuff to do outside and you can easily spend a few hours between the parks. Zipping over to the market is no problem, especially with how easy they have made it to move from each park to the next.

I am anxious to see what food options go in there, mainly from a prepared foods perspective. Greek food, eastern european, mexican food, etc would be on my list. I also think a place that'd cut you a steak and grill it for you while you wait would be very much like when you go to a coastal city and they shell an oyster and cook it for you. Make it a steak sandwich, idk. The smell and presentation would be great.

I'd like for there to be a booth where they toss catfish in the air for visitors to catch.

Catfish would be a rather dangerous catch unless they cut all the fins off. Them |expletive| are sharp as heck.

One thing I am so pleased about is simply the size of this place. There really is so much space here the variety of stuff they could have in there could be amazing. Most likely I will be hitting this place up every time I am in the parks, especially in the winter. Hope they have some pretzels/sausage and dark German beers during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays. Roasted sugar almonds/pecans and dark coffee over the winter also would be wonderful.

I didn't even think of that. It will be great to for all the people who visit the skate ribbon to use.

Omaha’s planned $80M public market sprouts from old roots

Nebraska Examiner wrote:The design provides space for about 30 permanent vendors, he said. Those locally owned and operated small businesses are yet to be selected, but Gutman said a sampling of staple tenants would include a butcher, a fishmonger, bakers, beer and wine makers and an ice cream shop. Prepared food will be offered.

Nebraska Examiner wrote:[Vic]Gutman said on-site parking for about 75 cars is to be supplemented with a city parking structure across the street.

That's a great way to put it! I don't mind starting from a different park in the river front. I'd rather get a different experience, instead of seeing massive parking lots, which I've seen in other cities, I would rather walk in greenery because to me that's a much better experience than going through baking asphalt!

agree. And of all the public markets I've been to in bigger cities, you never just pull right up to the front door. I think that a lot of people in Omaha or cities this size don't understand that it's not like a trip to walmart. It's about being downtown, picking up a bite, grabbing some wares from one of the stands, and then continuing on and enjoying the day. I was just telling a relative about this that lives in Des Moines and they couldn't believe how cool Omaha is and how much they wish they were like us. Never thought I'd hear that in a million years.

In a recent visit to NYC our friends took us to their favorite deli and we got all the stuff for a picnic. We walked to Central Park with a cooler, and few bags of groceries and it was maybe 15 minutes of walking to get to a good place in the park from the store, and nobody was bothered by it all. When we got there we surrounded by thousands of people doing the same thing, bringing in fresh food from home, a deli, or nearby store and just enjoying the park. I hope to see a lot more of that with a market like this close by. Even as a much smaller city, I feel like Omaha has had an appetite for something like this and I hope it does really well.

me too. This is the most exciting project I've seen in a while in terms of lifestyle and being downtown. It has the potential for really positive impact in ways many folks don't really grasp yet
