I can't say that I am too disappointed by this schedule. Sure, it has its cupcakes, but it is tough to be upset about playing a Big East team on your home court. I believe this is the last year in the contract for the Xavier game, I love this series, I hope it can continue. The St. Joe's series should also be fantastic. I just wish for a change we can make a descent schedule without relying on the "Jesuit connections." Oh well, I will take what I can get at least. This schedule should fit this team pretty well, especially how young and inexperienced they will be.

I just can't wait to hear Matt P. on THE Mighty Big Sports 590 give his old buddies Dana and the Raz heck over this schedule. You know if there is one thing Matt hates is a schedule with cupcakes. I anxiously await his blog entry on this subject.

I think they are fair. They had very well thought out answers.

By the way, I think Dr John's pays most of the bills on 590.....

I should have prefaced my post by indicating sarcasm was involved. Matt P. made a point of how weak Nebraska's non-conference schedule is this year, but of course says little about the Creighton's watered down schedule. Not that I care that Creighton scheduled the way they did - it is a reasonable schedule. It is more Matt's tired act of slamming Nebraska and then turning the other direction on Creighton. All while claiming to be impartial.

I for one am glad there is finally someone in this state not partial to everything Nebraska. It gets really old. Creighton deserves more attention, they've earned it. Nebraska basketball has done NOTHING, EVER.

CU Basketball: Jays focusing on defense, rebounding

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1 ... d=10161254
Defense and rebounding. Rebounding and defense.

That's the mantra Dana Altman is trying to drive home to his Creighton basketball team in the early days of preseason practice. If the Bluejays are to be successful, Altman told his players on the opening night of practice, they're going to have to be demons on the boards and on defense.

"I think if anyone wants to win, they need to focus on defense and rebounding," Creighton guard Josh Dotzler said. "If we want to win games, we're definitely going to have to do those things and do them well.

"We're not the biggest team, we're not the most experienced team, but we can be a good defensive team and we can rebound the ball."

Even in seasons when Creighton is blessed with a wealth of offensive talent or experience, Altman has always been big on his teams being able to "D" up and hit the boards. Many a player has found the coach's doghouse after letting up in either of those aspects.

This season, Creighton is neither blessed with experience nor returning offensive firepower. Nine of the 14 players on the roster did not play Division I basketball last season. Dane Watts, who has been more of a complementary player in his first three seasons in the program, is the top returning scorer. Watts averaged 9.9 points per game last season. No other returning player averaged more than 3.0 points per game.

The loss of All-Missouri Valley Conference selections Nate Funk and Anthony Tolliver leaves Creighton with two giant holes to fill.

Outside of Oregon and Creighton, Nebraska's non-conference schedule IS pathetically weak (and only has one non-conference game outside the state, which is even more ridiculous). Creighton has St. Joe's, DePaul, @Xavier, @Drexel, and @Bracket Buster. Five games much tougher than playing the Little Red, a team picked 10th in the Big XII, at home.

You mean... outside of Oregon. Creighton isn't going to be nearly the same opponent as the 20th ranked team which NU beat last season.

You know, claiming your second toughest non-conference opponent isn't that tough doesn't exactly bolster the argument at hand. (Namely, that the Little Red is playing a ridiculously weak schedule and that Creighton's non-conference slate is clearly superior).

I believe you're referring to someone else's argument.

Although how sad would it be to weather that tough schedule only to lose to 'little red' at home? :D

I thought I would bring this post over here where it belongs.

I look at both Crieghton and NU in rebuilding mode. Doc is still bringing in players that fit his style and Altman has to reload after losing the seniors and a talented freshman who carried most of the load last year.[/quote]

Ideally... an established program is going to have a little better continuity from one year to the next... but obviously that doesn't always happen. Who knows though... Altman's guys could surprise us.

If the choice is making the NCAA tournament but losing to Nebraska or beating the Little Red and missing the NCAA tournament, I'll take the former every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

If Nebraska wants to hang their hats on the Creighton game every year, whatever. I'll take things for which you actually get to hang banners.

I would be a bit careful saying that. I hung my hat on beating Nebraska every year for a while too. But we have moved up in the world. Sure, an upset over big brother down in Lincoln was great, but lately, we seem to be over that big/little brother mentality. It is a rivalry, we both have more important conference games. For example, I would take a win at SIU over a win at Nebraska any day.

I thought I should mention, former Bluejay Anthony Tolliver has made the opening day roster of the Cleveland Cavaliers. How cool is this, 2 former Jays in the NBA! During the preseason, he averaged 2 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in just over 6 minutes per game. He will more than likely be on the inactive players roster, as NBA rules allow for only 12 active and 3 inactive players, but who cares, he went from being only a second rounder in the CBA draft to on a NBA roster in just a matter of months. I hope nothing but the best for this guy, he works his tail off, and apparently, others are noticing.

Creighton BB had an 'Open House' at the QWEST last night. I guess they have sold over 14,000 season tickets. The team did some 5 on 5 scrimmage for awhile --- they looked ok but they are YOUNG and very much a guard and small small forward dominated team.

BTW - Falker was also named the Preseason Conference Player of the Year. It seems like he has been at SIU for 8 years.

1. Southern Illinois (39) 390
2. Bradley 311
3. Missouri State 283
4. Creighton 266
5. Illinois State 235
6. Wichita State 210
7. Northern Iowa 197
8. Indiana State 110
9. Drake 80
10. Evansville 63

Bradley and Illinois State are getting a lot of press - even though ISU was given a 5th place preseason ranking.

2007-08 MVC Preseason All-Conference Team
Eric Coleman, UNI, C, 6-6, 240, Sr.
PJ Couisnard, Wichita State, G/F, 6-4, 216, Sr.
Randal Falker, Southern Illinois, F, 6-7, 230, Sr.
Deven Mitchell, Missouri State, F, 6-5, 210, Sr.
Daniel Ruffin, Bradley, G, 5-10, 162, Sr.

After we find out how many are coming I will go the the CU ticket office and get a section for us.
Upper bowl tickets go for $12.00

ESPN Gameday may broadcast from Carbondale when Creighton visits the Salukis.
When ESPN officials approached the Salukis about which team they would want to play if the network brought its college basketball "GameDay" production to campus, Lowery said Creighton was the hands-down pick. The two teams will play in Carbondale, Ill., on Jan. 26 in a game that will be broadcast by ESPN2.

"It was like, 'Who else?'" Lowery said. "It's just beneficial for our league to have these two teams play in that atmosphere, in that environment and with that media attention considering what we've done."

Getting ESPN to bring its "GameDay" crew of Reece Davis and Digger Phelps to one of its campuses is considered a major coup for the Valley as it attempts to play its way out of being considered a mid-major league. Lowery said Valley officials pushed hard for the matchup.
