I completely forgot to post this!

Proud to be a Mav

John Keenan WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Maverick mojo was on the agenda Thursday at the Suburban Rotary Club’s weekly meeting.

Mike Hastings, associate hockey coach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, brought players and cheerleaders with him as he spoke to a crowd of appreciative Roatarians.

Hastings, who was the head coach of the Omaha Lancers for 14 years before returning to the city this year to join coach Dean Blais’s staff, spoke about his love for Omaha.

“I’ve been asked, ‘Why come back to Omaha?’” said Hastings, who spent a year at the University of Minnesota.

“It’s probably the same reason everybody’s here. It’s a special place. The Midwest is something that’s unique -- and that’s not to beat on the people that are on the East Coast, West Coast, anything like that -- but I’ve been on both, I’ve recruited both. I love this place, I love Omaha. Both my children were born here.”
John Keenan WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:“The biggest idea was to come back and be part of something special,” Hastings said. “I’ve seen the UNO hockey program grow from it’s infancy . . . when you got to go down to the Civic Auditorium and see them play Bowling Green, play the play-in game, and have that place rocking.”
John Keenan WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Hastings also passed on a message from Blais, who he said was recruiting Thursday.

“We’re incredibly proud to be representing the University of Nebraska at Omaha,” Hastings said. “We’re very proud to be representing the city of Omaha.”

Apparently last nights game is not over... A BG player ruled not eligible for the shoot out. Officials are trying to determine what to do next. One option would be re do the shoot out tonight, before the game.

www.omavs.com wrote:OMAHA, Neb. - Upon further review, Central Collegiate Hockey Association officials let stand the result of last night's UNO hockey game with Bowling Green, giving the Falcons an extra point for a 1-0 shootout win over the Mavericks. The game ended in a 3-3 tie after regulation.

The Mavericks disputed the result, saying Bowling Green had used an inelligible player in the shootout. That player, freshman Jordan Samuels-Thomas, scored the only goal in the shootout but by NCAA rule was not to have participated because he had been whistled for a roughing penalty and was still in the penalty box when overtime expired.

The game officials did not notice the infraction until after the game had been concluded.

The Mavericks are now 3-0-2 overall and 0-0-1-0 in the CCHA. Bowling Green is 0-4-1 and 0-0-1-1. The two teams meet again tonight at Qwest Center Omaha. Face-off is 8 p.m.

After the NM Broncos tied it up in the Third Alex Hudson scored the winning goal to put UNO up 4-3

UNO and the Broncos play again tomorrow at 7.05p

Right before scoring the winning goal Alex Hudson checked a guy causing his stick to come down on my hand like a hammer... Any idea how long this pain will last?

Blais, Mavs finally back to home ice

http://www.omaha.com/article/20100106/M ... 06/-1/mavs
By Chad Purcell World-Herald Staff Writer wrote:The Mavericks return to Qwest Center Omaha, and resume their CCHA schedule, when they host games Friday and Saturday against 20th-ranked Alaska. UNO has played seven of its past eight games on the road since the end of November. In all, the Mavs have been away for nine of their past 12 contests.

Throw in a grueling trip to Lake Superior State on Jan. 15 and 16, and UNO will have played just five home games in the span of more than two months.

The Mavericks also worked their way through final exams in December, and they all made trips home during the holidays.

Plus, they haven't skated with coach Dean Blais for nearly four weeks. While Blais was in Canada with Team USA, associate head coach Mike Hastings and assistant Nick Fohr steered UNO's ship.

Evidence says Mavericks could have strong 2nd half

Chad Purcell, OWH wrote:During the first three weeks of January, it seemed as if anything that could go wrong for the UNO hockey team did. In steamrolling Northern Michigan this weekend, the Mavericks looked like the scary-good second-half team coach Dean Blais believes they can be.

Shatel: Michigan visit marks the end of a Mav rivalry

http://www.omaha.com/article/20100211/SPORTS/702119755
Tom Shatel, OWH wrote:Big Blue. Evil Empire. Michigan. Michigoon. Say it any way you want, but say it for the last time this weekend.

The maize and blue will skate against UNO tonight and Saturday night, most likely for the last time in a regular-season game. The Mavericks join the WCHA next year, and there won't be a lot of incentive for Michigan to pencil UNO into future schedules.

So it's a melancholy weekend, with a capital “M.'' This is UNO's last CCHA series at home and, of course, it had to be Michigan. Who else? Back when the Mavs joined the CCHA and were trying to make a name for themselves, they targeted Michigan the way Colorado targeted Nebraska in football. It created interest, but it was also half-compliment. If you are going to measure your program, measure it against the best.

It had a natural tug for a rivalry, too, the arrogance and attitude of Michigan against the upstart with the big arena who didn't want to wait to climb the college hockey ladder. The Mavs got Michigan's attention early, with an upset in the playoffs in Detroit in 2000, and it seems as if Red Berenson and the Wolverines have been trying to pay them back ever since.
Tom Shatel, OWH wrote:Winning is fun. But after mighty Michigan comes mightier Miami (Ohio), first-place Miami, on the road next week, followed by Bemidji State at UNO to end the regular season. It's a tall order for a hot UNO team trying to dash to a first-round bye in the CCHA playoffs. But Blais likes his team, and he's talking NCAA playoffs.

“Put it this way: I wouldn't want to play us in the playoffs,'' Blais said. “We're getting better each week. The next three weeks are all gauges. If we can get a split and go 3-3, that puts us up pretty high in the NCAA rankings. We're going to come out of the woodwork if we can go 3-3.''

The heavy lifting starts with Michigan, or Michigoon, which is how it should be.
